If Forspoken closes at startup or repeatedly crashes during a cutscene, start by identifying your platform and game build. For PC players using Steam, Square Enix’s first recommended step is to verify the game files. That checks the installation, but it is not a guaranteed fix—and the available information cannot identify one cause for every crash.
First, record what happens
Before changing settings, note the details that can distinguish an installation problem from a platform- or hardware-specific one:

- Platform and storefront, such as Steam, Microsoft Store, Epic Games Store, or console.
- Installed game version and, on PC, your GPU model and graphics-driver version.
- Whether Frame Generation is enabled, if the option is available.
- The exact error text, or whether the game simply closes.
- Whether it crashes at the same scene or action every time, or at different points.
This is a useful diagnostic checklist, not a data list Square Enix says every player must provide. Repeatability is worth reporting, but it does not by itself establish the cause.
For PC on Steam: verify the installation
Square Enix’s PC support guidance recommends validating the installation if the game crashes, does not start, or displays a black screen. Its instructions are for the Steam version:

- Right-click Forspoken and choose Properties.
- Open Local Files.
- Select Verify integrity of game cache.
Steam checks the installed game files and can replace files that fail verification. It is a sensible first step, not proof that damaged files caused the crash. If the issue persists, Square Enix’s PC technical-support article advises contacting support.
Install updates, but match fixes to their exact conditions
Check for available updates from the storefront where you own the game. Past patch notes document several crash fixes, but each applies to a particular version or circumstance; they do not show that all current crashes share the same cause.

Startup crash tied to certain GPUs
Square Enix’s February 7, 2023 Patch 1.03 announcement said it fixed a startup crash affecting certain GPUs. The notice covered PC versions, including Steam, Microsoft Store, and Epic Games Store, as well as the demo; Microsoft Store availability depended on approval timing. This is evidence of a historical, GPU-specific issue—not a diagnosis of a current crash.
Crashes in certain scenes or after certain actions
Steam’s March 16, 2023 Patch 1.11 notes say the update fixed an issue where the game crashed in certain scenes or after certain actions. The notice does not identify the scenes, so it cannot be treated as confirmation that a particular cutscene crash was fixed.

Steam Deck behavior
Square Enix’s November 10, 2023 Steam-only Patch 1.23 notice says it fixed some cases where the game did not operate properly on Steam Deck. It does not establish a fix for every Steam Deck crash.
Check the Intel Frame Generation case only if it matches your setup
Square Enix documented a specific crash introduced with Patch 1.22, announced September 29, 2023: it could occur with Frame Generation enabled on a particular Intel GPU. In a November 8, 2023 notice, the Forspoken Team said Intel Graphics Driver 31.0.101.4952 or later resolved that condition.

If you have the affected Intel GPU and use Frame Generation, check Intel’s current driver support and install a driver supported for your hardware. Version 31.0.101.4952 is the version named in the historical notice; it should not be read as the newest driver in 2026. If your hardware or settings do not match, that documented issue is not evidence that this is your crash’s cause.

Square Enix separately reported low frame rates on some monitors running at 240 Hz or higher when FSR3 Frame Generation and VSync were both enabled. Its suggested workarounds were to use current GPU drivers, turn VSync off, or set the refresh rate below 240 Hz. That notice describes a performance problem, not an established explanation or fix for a crash.

For console crashes, use console-specific support
The Steam file-verification route does not apply to console versions. The official material available here does not establish a console-specific remedy for a crash at startup or during a cutscene, so use the relevant platform’s official support channel or contact Square Enix with the console model, game version, error details, and steps that reproduce the crash. Do not apply PC instructions to a console by analogy.
If it still crashes, send Square Enix the reproduction details
When contacting Square Enix support, include the platform and storefront, game version, exact error text, and the steps or scene that reliably lead to the crash. PC players should also include the GPU, driver version, and Frame Generation state. Square Enix’s support index does not present a comprehensive crash-specific answer for every platform, so a patch note for a different setup should not be treated as a diagnosis.
