Reach Research Rank 15 to start Mable’s request, “A Call from Mable,” and choose one Kanto starter at the Pokémon Research Lab. To get the other two, finish the main story, then catch them in Wild Zone 20. Your first choice does not permanently lock you out of the rest of the trio.
How to get your first Kanto starter from Mable
- Progress until you reach Research Rank 15.
- Accept the request “A Call from Mable,” then fast travel to the Pokémon Research Lab.
- Go to the lab’s third floor and speak with Mable. Choose one of Bulbasaur, Charmander, or Squirtle; this is a one-Pokémon choice, not a reward of all three. Nintendo Life’s Kanto starter guide describes the request and choice.
How to get the other two starters
- Finish the main story and see the credits. Wild Zone 20 opens afterward, according to Nintendo Life’s guide.
- Search Wild Zone 20 for the two starters you did not choose, then catch them. The guide reports that Pokémon in this zone are high level, so they can be ready to evolve soon after you catch them.
For a Pokémon that flees or resists capture, the official Pokémon catching advice recommends using stealth or battling to improve your chance before throwing a Poké Ball.
Which starter should you choose first?
Choose the one you want on your team before the postgame. Mable gives you the earliest access to one member of the trio, while the other two require completing the main story and reaching Wild Zone 20. The initial choice is therefore about which starter you want to use sooner, rather than which ones you can ultimately collect.
Version note
Nintendo Support lists Ver. 2.0.2, released March 18, 2026, as the latest update shown on its Pokémon Legends: Z-A update page. Nintendo says this update is required for Internet features and that players must use the same software version to play together. The update page does not report a change to Mable’s request or the Wild Zone 20 route. Check your installed version if you play online or are following a guide tied to current behavior.
