It was an official, round-based tactical experience inside Fortnite, not a standalone game. Here’s how it worked, when it launched, and what is known about its retirement.
Is Fortnite Ballistic still playable?
No. Epic’s support page gives April 16, 2026, as Ballistic’s removal date. The Epic Games Store listing also marks the experience unavailable. Ballistic should therefore be understood as a retired Fortnite mode, not a current playlist.
Epic’s support page says first-person shooter tools remain available in Unreal Editor for Fortnite (UEFN), but it does not provide further details about Ballistic’s removal or a mode-specific postmortem.
What was Fortnite Ballistic?
Ballistic was an official 5v5, first-person tactical mode in Fortnite. Epic announced it on December 7, 2024, and early access began December 11, 2024. Epic described it as a “no-build mode” in its launch announcement.

Its central objective was an attack-versus-defend battle over the Rift Point Device. Attackers aimed to plant it at one of two sites and let it detonate; defenders tried to prevent the plant or stop the detonation. Players did not respawn during a round, so eliminating the opposing team could also decide the round.
How did a Ballistic match work?
- Buy gear between rounds. At launch, players began with a Ranger Pistol and 800 Credits. Eliminations and planting the device could earn credits, which players spent on equipment for later rounds.
- Attack or defend. One team attempted to plant and detonate the device while the other defended the sites. There were no round respawns.
- Switch sides after six rounds. Teams changed from attack to defense, or vice versa, after the first six rounds.
- Reach seven round wins. The first team to win seven rounds took the match. Epic’s announcement put it simply: “The game is over when either team has won 7 rounds total!”
The launch version included one map, Skyline 10, and a deliberately limited selection of weapons and items. Epic listed assault rifles, shotguns, submachine guns, sniper rifles, pistols, smoke grenades and flashbangs. Players could also choose a Flex Gadget, including a proximity mine, bubble shield, recon grenade, frag grenade or impulse grenade. These are details of the early-access launch build, not a description of a mode that remains available.

What changed during early access?
Ballistic was still being tuned after launch. In its March 11, 2025 v34.10 development update, Epic said it planned to add two map “shells” in April, along with weapons and gadgets. The stated goal was to use player movement, rotations and sightlines to guide map tuning.
Epic also asked players for feedback on mode timings, weapons and gadgets, movement and shooting, Skyline 10, the credit economy, and interface usability. That update changed matchmaking behavior: a match would no longer start unless the lobby was full at 5v5. If matchmaking could not fill the lobby, players would return to the main menu and need to start matchmaking again.

Why was Fortnite Ballistic removed?
Epic’s support page confirms the retirement date but does not explain why Ballistic specifically was removed. GamesRadar+ reported on March 24, 2026, that Epic’s broader announcement cited some Fortnite modes’ failure to attract and retain a large player base. That is broader context for mode retirements, not a detailed Ballistic-specific explanation.

Ballistic’s removal ended access to this particular first-person tactical mode. Epic’s support page says first-person shooter tools remain available in UEFN, but that does not mean Ballistic itself—or an equivalent official playlist—is still playable.
