From December 1, 2024, XP earned in any Fortnite experience could progress active passes at the same time; players then claimed rewards unlocked by that XP. The change unified progression, but it did not make premium rewards free: each pass still had to be purchased separately to access all its premium rewards.
What changed when Fortnite scrapped Battle Stars?
Before the overhaul, players used progression currencies such as Battle Stars to claim rewards. Epic’s new system made XP the progression mechanism: earning XP unlocked pass rewards, which players could claim without spending Battle Stars. Epic said the transition would apply across Fortnite passes and that a player could claim unlocked rewards in non-sequential order, subject to the pass’s available pages and other requirements.

Epic announced the change on October 28, 2024, and said it would take effect by December 1. Its announcement described the plan this way: “By December 1, all passes in Fortnite will progress simultaneously by earning XP from playing any experience.” Epic’s announcement and FAQ also explained that players could set a pass to auto-claim the next available reward.
Which currencies were retired, and when?
- Festival Points: retired November 2, 2024.
- Battle Stars and LEGO Pass Studs: retired December 1, 2024.
These were the dates Epic gave for its 2024 transition. The currencies were replaced by XP-based pass progression and reward claims.

How did shared XP progression work?
Under the announced system, XP earned in any Fortnite experience could progress active passes simultaneously. That meant players did not have to earn progression XP in only the mode associated with a particular pass. Epic noted that each pass could still have its own XP requirement for each reward tier, so the same XP earned could advance different passes at different rates.
XP unlocked rewards; it did not automatically mean every reward was claimed. Players could claim unlocked rewards in a non-sequential order, or use the auto-claim setting for the next available reward. Pass pages and other requirements could still affect which rewards were available to claim.

Did the change make premium Battle Pass rewards free?
No. Shared XP progression changed how passes advanced, not who could access their premium reward tracks. Epic said players still needed to purchase each pass separately to access all of its premium rewards.
For Chapter 6 Season 2: LAWLESS, announced February 21, 2025, Epic listed the premium Battle Pass at 1,000 V-Bucks or as included through Fortnite Crew. Those are Season 2 terms, not a permanent or current price. Epic’s Chapter 6 Season 2 announcement described a pass with both free and premium rewards and said XP from any Fortnite experience progressed it.

How the later Battle Pass price change differs
Epic announced a separate price change on March 10, 2026, effective March 19, 2026. Beginning on that date, the Battle Pass would cost 800 V-Bucks and award 800 V-Bucks for completion. Epic contrasted this with the previous arrangement: a 1,000 V-Buck pass with another 500 V-Bucks available in Bonus Rewards. This later pricing update should not be applied retroactively to Chapter 6 Season 2. Epic’s March 2026 pricing announcement gives the effective date and details.
