Players accused some artwork in Fortnite Chapter 7 of being AI-generated, but the accusations were not proof—and Epic Games had not confirmed that the disputed images were made with AI. One specific claim, about Marty McFly graffiti, was later rebutted by the artist, who showed the artwork’s creation process and layers. A separate demonstration reported in June 2026 showed AI-assisted concept-art work at Epic, but does not establish how any particular Chapter 7 asset was made.
What sparked the Fortnite Chapter 7 AI art backlash?
After Chapter 7 launched in November 2025, players circulated images they suspected were AI-generated. Among the examples discussed in coverage were a poster described as showing a nine-toed yeti and stylized graffiti depicting Marty McFly. The criticism included calls such as “No to AI slop” and complaints that a major game company should support human artists.

Those reactions document player concerns, not the provenance of the images. Visual oddities or a player’s suspicion alone cannot establish that an image was generated by AI. Futurism reported that more than 80 percent of respondents to a poll attached to a Reddit megathread said AI content “doesn’t belong in Fortnite or other video games.” That figure describes respondents to that particular poll; it is not a representative measure of Fortnite players as a whole. Futurism’s December 2, 2025 coverage also quoted a player saying, “A billion-dollar company should have no problem supporting real artists for real art.” That was a player’s opinion, not a verified statement about Epic’s practices or policy.
Did Epic confirm that the Chapter 7 artwork was AI-generated?
No. Contemporaneous coverage by Futurism and Video Games Chronicle said Epic had not confirmed that the disputed Chapter 7 artwork was AI-generated. The UK House of Commons Library’s January 20, 2026 briefing on AI content labelling likewise summarized the criticism while noting that Epic had not confirmed the claim. The available reporting does not establish an asset-by-asset provenance list for the images players questioned.

Was the Marty McFly graffiti AI-generated?
The specific accusation about the Marty McFly graffiti was rebutted by its artist. Video Games Chronicle reported that the artist shared a video showing the artwork’s creation and component layers, demonstrating that this image was human-created. That resolves the claim about this particular artwork; it does not determine how the other disputed images were made. Read Video Games Chronicle’s account of the artist’s response.
What did Epic show about AI-assisted art later?
In reporting published June 16, 2026, Dexerto described an Unreal Engine channel video in which Epic artists used generative AI during concept-art work and then corrected errors in the generated material. That later demonstration is evidence of AI assistance in the workflow shown in the video. It does not show that the specific Chapter 7 assets accused in 2025 were made that way. Dexerto’s report describes the video and players’ calls for disclosure.

The House of Commons Library briefing also says Fortnite announced generative-AI NPC creation in June 2025. Creating or enabling AI characters is distinct from establishing who—or what—created a particular poster, graffiti image, skin, or other piece of season artwork.

The backlash intersected with a wider debate about whether games and storefronts should label AI use. Futurism reported Epic CEO Tim Sweeney’s position on AI tags: “The AI tag is relevant to art exhibits for authorship disclosure, and to digital content licensing marketplaces where buyers need to understand the rights situation. It makes no sense for game stores, where AI will be involved in nearly all future production.” That comment addresses disclosure policy; it does not confirm AI use on a named Chapter 7 asset. Futurism reported Sweeney’s statement in its coverage of the backlash.

The House of Commons Library briefing describes a difference between storefront policies: Steam required disclosure of AI use in pre-generated and live-generated content, while Epic Games Store did not require comparable disclosures in the briefing’s account. It also says Fortnite’s developer rules addressed originality and attribution but did not specifically mention AI-generated content. These policy details provide context for the debate, not evidence about the origin of any individual Fortnite image.

- Epic had not confirmed the specific artwork allegations in the contemporaneous reporting cited here.
- The Marty McFly graffiti claim was specifically disproved by the artist’s demonstration of its creation process.
- Epic’s later AI-assisted concept-art demonstration shows a workflow in use in the work presented, not the provenance of the disputed Chapter 7 images.
- Player poll responses and arguments about disclosure policies should not be treated as proof of an asset’s authorship.
