If you use Windows Sonic or Dolby Atmos, try switching to stereo or another non-spatial output. That workaround is for distortion associated with spatial audio; Epic’s acknowledgement does not establish that every case of lag, stuttering, crackling, or sound cutting out has the same cause.
What Epic has acknowledged
A Reddit post reproduces correspondence attributed to Epic Games Support saying the team was aware of distorted audio with spatial audio formats. The post links to official Fortnite issue channels whose title says Xbox and PC players may have distorted audio when using Windows Sonic or Dolby Atmos. The available evidence is a player’s reproduction of support correspondence, so it supports a narrow claim about spatial-audio-related distortion—not a confirmed explanation for every Fortnite audio problem.
The reproduced support message recommends switching to stereo or another non-spatial option until the issue is fixed. The linked official status page could not be independently verified here, and no fix date is established. See the community post reproducing the support correspondence.
First, identify which audio problem you have
- Distorted, robotic, or crackling game sound: If Windows Sonic or Dolby Atmos is enabled, test stereo or another non-spatial output first.
- Delayed or stuttering sound: These symptoms are not specifically explained by the spatial-audio acknowledgement. Check whether the issue occurs outside Fortnite as a diagnostic clue, but do not assume that result proves a particular cause.
- Audio cutting out: Treat this separately from distortion; the acknowledgement does not confirm that dropouts share its cause.
- Only Fortnite voice chat is affected: Use the voice-chat checks below. Epic’s voice-chat guidance concerns chat routing and permissions, not general game audio. Epic’s Fortnite voice chat troubleshooting guide.
Try the spatial-audio workaround
- On Xbox, check whether Windows Sonic or Dolby Atmos spatial audio is active for your audio output.
- Change the output to stereo or another non-spatial option.
- Reopen Fortnite and check whether the distorted sound changes.
This is a reported workaround for distortion associated with spatial formats, not a guaranteed fix for lag, stuttering, or audio dropouts.
