If Fortnite says your account is already associated with a different account, first find which Epic Games account is linked to your PlayStation, Xbox, or Nintendo account. Don’t unlink anything until you confirm which Epic account contains your Fortnite progress and purchases. Epic documents two similar linking problems, and the right fix depends on which message and account relationship you have.
What the “Failed to Link Account” error means
The wording can describe either of two situations. Epic’s support guidance distinguishes an existing link from a restriction on linking a different account of the same platform type. The message alone does not identify which Epic account is involved, so check before changing account links.

Find which Epic account is linked to your PSN, Xbox, or Nintendo account
- Sign out of Epic Games in your browser.
- Open a private or incognito browser window and go to the Epic Games sign-in page.
- Select the icon for the platform you use, then sign in with that platform account’s credentials.
- Review the Epic account information and its linked accounts. Note which Epic account is shown before unlinking or changing anything. Epic recommends this sign-in method to identify the account associated with a console login. See Epic’s instructions
Confirm where your Fortnite progress and purchases are
Before unlinking, make sure you have identified the Epic account that holds the Fortnite progress and purchases you want to keep. Epic’s recovery guidance explains that this data is associated with the Epic account, and describes how to move a console account away from an empty account and connect it to the Epic account with the data. If you are unsure which Epic account has your data, stop before unlinking and contact Epic Support. Removing the platform from the wrong Epic account can make it harder to access the account setup you intended.

Remove the same-platform linking restriction, if that is your case
If a different account of the same platform type was previously linked to the Epic account you want to use, follow Epic’s restriction-removal process rather than repeatedly trying to link accounts. Epic says this restriction can be removed only once every 365 days and cannot be bypassed. You must be signed in and able to access the email address registered to the Epic account. Follow Epic’s current restriction-removal steps
- Sign in to the Epic account you intend to use and confirm it is the account with your Fortnite progress and purchases.
- In Epic account settings, open Linked accounts and unlink the existing account if it is still connected.
- Complete Epic’s restriction-removal flow. You will need access to the email registered to that Epic account.
- After removing the restriction, use Linked accounts to connect the intended platform account.
Check Fortnite Crew before unlinking
If the platform account you plan to remove has an active Fortnite Crew subscription, review or cancel it before unlinking. Epic advises that no new monthly Crew content will be granted to the Epic account once that account is unlinked. Epic’s unlinking and restriction guidance

If the linked account still is not clear
- Try signing in with your Epic email instead of the console sign-in option if the sign-in appears to be leading to the wrong account.
- Repeat the check in a private window or a different browser to avoid using an existing browser session.
- If you cannot identify the Epic account, or cannot access its registered email, contact Epic Support before removing or linking accounts.
