If Fortnite started running slowly or stuttering after an update, the timing alone does not show that the update caused the problem. Epic’s V.3.0.0 notes list several performance changes and specific hitching fixes, but do not identify a universal FPS-drop cause. On PC, start with a low-settings test, then check drivers, GPU selection, background programs and—if performance worsens during a long session—cooling.
Did Chapter 3 cause Fortnite FPS drops?
Epic’s V.3.0.0 patch notes document CPU performance improvements when activating overlaps, optimized grass rendering and HUD elements, and fixes for hitching after jumping from the Battle Bus and encountering certain skins for the first time. They do not say that the update caused a general FPS regression. The reviewed official sources also do not establish how many players experienced drops or diagnose any individual PC.
A problem that begins around an update may still be related to settings, drivers, hardware load or another change on the system. Treat the timing as a useful clue, not a diagnosis. Epic notes that Fortnite performance depends on the hardware in use and that troubleshooting steps may produce only a small improvement—or no change.
How to troubleshoot low FPS or stuttering on PC
1. Record when and where the problem happens
Before changing settings, note the PC’s processor, graphics card, memory, Fortnite version, rendering mode, resolution and graphics settings. Record whether FPS is consistently low, drops suddenly, or deteriorates only after playing for a while. Check whether other games show similar symptoms. This information helps distinguish a Fortnite-specific issue from broader system performance trouble.

2. Check requirements, then test the Low preset
Use Epic’s graphics and performance troubleshooting steps to check that the PC meets Fortnite’s system requirements. Set the Quality Preset to Low and test the game. If that improves performance, raise settings gradually, testing after each change, until you find a workable balance between frame rate and image quality.
Changing several settings at once makes it harder to identify what helped. For a useful comparison, keep the resolution and gameplay conditions consistent while testing one setting or rendering mode at a time.

3. Update the graphics driver
Install the current graphics driver using the update process provided by the GPU manufacturer. Epic recommends updating graphics drivers as part of its low-FPS and graphics troubleshooting guidance. Restart the PC after installing a driver if its installer requests it, then check whether the same symptoms remain.
4. Make sure Fortnite uses the dedicated GPU
On a laptop or a PC with more than one GPU, verify that Fortnite is assigned to the high-performance dedicated graphics card, if one is available. A game running on integrated graphics instead may perform differently from one using the dedicated GPU. The setting is managed through the system or graphics software, and its exact location varies by hardware and software version.

5. Check background programs and power settings
Close unnecessary programs that may be using processor, memory or graphics resources while Fortnite is running. Epic’s low-frame-rate troubleshooting page also advises checking Windows power settings: an energy-saving mode can slow games and graphics. Use a power mode suited to performance when troubleshooting, particularly on a laptop, while keeping its normal battery and heat trade-offs in mind.
6. Compare rendering modes and graphics quality
Epic describes Performance Mode as an option intended to reduce rendering demands, with trade-offs in visual quality. Its current settings guidance recommends Performance Mode and lower graphics settings for performance-focused play, and notes that ray tracing is computationally expensive. Compare modes on your own PC rather than assuming one is best for every setup; settings and behavior can change over time.

Epic published historical Performance Mode examples in 2021: one laptop with an Intel i5-8265U, 8 GB RAM and Intel UHD Graphics 620 went from 24 to 61 FPS, while a laptop with an AMD A10-5745M, 6 GB RAM and Radeon HD 8610G went from 18 to 45 FPS. Epic described both as standard Squads matches at 720p. These hardware-specific examples are not independent controlled benchmarks or a prediction of results on a current PC.
7. Investigate heat if performance falls during long sessions
If Fortnite runs acceptably at first but slows after extended play, overheating may be involved. Check that air vents are not blocked, clear dust where appropriate, and give the PC room for airflow. Epic’s graphics troubleshooting guidance and its low-FPS advice both identify heat or ventilation as a possible factor; the symptom pattern does not by itself prove overheating.

8. Consider storage on an older PC with recurring hitches
For an older computer with Fortnite installed on a hard drive, Epic says an SSD or 6 GB or more of RAM may provide a smoother experience and reduce overall hitches and stutters. Treat moving the game to an SSD as a possible hitch-reduction step—not a guaranteed fix for low FPS, and not evidence that every stutter is caused by storage.
9. Contact Epic if the problem persists
If these checks do not resolve the issue, submit a support ticket through Epic’s graphics and performance help page. Include the PC specifications, Fortnite version, rendering mode, settings and when the drops occur. Those details give support a clearer starting point than the update timing alone.
Quick Recap
