A Fortnite island code usually fails for one of six reasons: a mistyped digit, an island that is private or unpublished, a release that was disabled or rejected, a code that works only through direct entry rather than Discover, a creator-side publishing problem, or a Fortnite service incident. Start by entering the code again in Fortnite’s island-code flow, then ask the creator which release state is active. “Expired” is not a documented universal timer for public codes, so verify publication and moderation status instead of assuming the code has aged out.
What the error means
Fortnite’s message is often less specific than the underlying cause. “Invalid,” “unavailable,” or “expired” can describe different states. A code may be formatted correctly but point to an island that is not currently playable, or a perfectly healthy island may be missing from Discover because the creator published it as unlisted.

Use the result of a direct code test—not a Discover search alone—to separate these cases. Epic’s player guidance says to triple-check every digit in an island code when Fortnite reports it as invalid. A single wrong character is enough to produce the same broad failure a disabled island can produce.

- Copy the code again from the creator’s current post. Do not rely on an old screenshot, a video description that may have been edited, or a code remembered from a previous version. Compare every character, including repeated digits.
- Open Fortnite’s island-code entry flow. Enter the complete code there and submit it. Do not treat the absence of a result in Discover as proof that the code is invalid; unlisted islands are intentionally code-only.
- Record the exact result. Note whether Fortnite calls it invalid, unavailable, or otherwise refuses to load it. Also note whether the failure occurs before the island details appear or after you try to launch.
- Ask the creator for the active release state. The creator can tell you whether the island is listed, unlisted, unpublished, private, approved, rejected, or disabled in Creator Portal.
- Try once from a second player account or platform if available. If everyone gets the same result, the issue is likely the code or island state. If only one account or device fails, investigate a local or account-specific problem after checking service status.
- Check Epic’s live-service channels. Epic directs players to Epic Games Public Status, the @FortniteStatus account, and Fortnite’s known-issue channels during outages and bugs. A service incident can make a valid island appear unavailable.
These checks establish whether the problem follows the code, the island, or your particular session. Avoid repeatedly reinstalling Fortnite before doing them; a reinstall cannot make an unpublished or disabled island playable.

Release states: listed, unlisted, unpublished, and private
The creator’s release state determines where a code works and who can use it. The same project can have a public release and a separate private version, so ask which version the shared code represents.

Epic says an unlisted island can be played by anyone who has its code but will not appear in Discover. Conversely, an unpublished island is unavailable regardless of how accurately you enter its former code. Private-version codes are intended for testing and are not a substitute for a public release.
Fix an “invalid island code” message
Check every character, not just the last few digits
Epic’s 2023 guidance is direct: “Triple-check that every digit in your island code is correct.” Recopy the code instead of typing from memory. If the creator displayed it with spaces or punctuation, enter it in the format Fortnite’s field accepts and remove only presentation characters that the game does not accept. Compare the first and last digits as carefully as the middle ones; a one-character typo can look exactly like a dead code.

Ask whether the creator sent a public listed or unlisted release. A private-version code is for playtesting, and an unpublished project has no playable public release. If the creator has several versions, request the code for the currently approved release rather than a development or test code.

Have the creator verify the release in Creator Portal
The creator should open the project in Creator Portal and check its publication and moderation state. A code can be copied correctly while the release is rejected or disabled. Epic says disabled islands cannot be played, opened, or playtested. The creator must read the reason shown in Creator Portal, correct the issue, and resubmit or use the available appeal path.
When Fortnite says the island is unavailable
Unpublished or disabled release
An unavailable result often means the release is no longer active. Unpublished islands cannot be played, and disabled islands are blocked from playing, opening, and playtesting. Only the creator can restore that access by changing the project’s state, correcting a moderation problem, or completing the applicable appeal process.
Private code shared as a public code
Private versions are designed for creator testing. They do not pass public moderation and are not publicly accessible. If friends were invited to test a private version, that invitation does not turn its code into a public island listing. Request the creator’s approved public release code.

Service outage or known bug
Epic’s Public Status page, @FortniteStatus, and known-issue channels are the authoritative places to check for a current incident. If those channels report a problem affecting Creative, Discover, matchmaking, or content services, wait for the service to recover before changing account or installation settings. Rechecking the same code during an outage cannot distinguish a valid island from a temporarily unreachable service.

Did the Fortnite island code expire?
Epic’s published documentation does not define one universal expiration timer for public island codes. Therefore, an “expired” message should be treated as a prompt to verify the code and the island’s current state, not as proof that every public code automatically expires after a fixed number of days.
Check these possibilities in order:
- The creator replaced the old release and shared a different current code.
- The project is now unpublished, rejected, or disabled.
- The code is for a private version rather than the public island.
- The code was copied incorrectly or contains one stale digit.
- Fortnite is experiencing a content-service or Creative outage.
Ask the creator to confirm the code displayed for the currently approved public release. If the creator cannot find an enabled public release in Creator Portal, there is no player-side setting that can revive the old code.
Why a published island is missing from Discover
Discover visibility and code validity are separate. Epic states that approved islands constantly move into and out of Discover, and Player Support cannot control when a specific map appears there. A listed island can therefore be approved and playable by code while absent from the Discover carousel or search results at a particular moment.
An unlisted island is an even clearer case: it is published for anyone who has the code but is intentionally excluded from Discover. Use the direct island-code entry flow and judge availability from that result. Do not ask the creator to “fix Discover” when the release is unlisted; the code is the intended access method.

Creator fixes for a broken or unavailable code
Verify the version and publication state
- Open the project in Creator Portal.
- Identify which release is intended for players: the latest approved public release, not a private test version.
- Check whether the release is listed or unlisted, and confirm that it is published and enabled.
- Copy the code from that active release and send the new code to players.
If the project is unpublished, players cannot load it. If it is disabled, Epic requires the creator to read the moderation reason, fix the issue, and resubmit or use the available appeal route.
Handle a rejected or failed release
A failed new release does not automatically remove the currently live version. Epic’s moderation FAQ says: “A failed release does not affect a currently live island, and so your last approved release remains as the current version.” Tell players to keep using the last approved code while you correct and resubmit the failed update, provided that live version still shows as published and enabled.
Recover from “PRIVATE CODE FAILED”
If Creator Portal shows Epic’s “PRIVATE CODE FAILED” content-service error while publishing a private version, Epic advises waiting 24–48 hours and trying again. This is a creator-facing publishing remedy, not a guaranteed expiration period for public island codes. If the private-code attempt still fails after that wait, contact Epic Support. Players cannot repair this error by changing their Fortnite installation.
Check moderation before distributing a new code
Do not announce a replacement code until the associated release is approved and active. A code copied from a draft, private version, or disabled release will continue to fail for players even if the digits are correct. Keep the public code and test code clearly separated in creator notes and community posts.

- Tell players when an island is unlisted so they use direct code entry instead of searching Discover.
What not to do
- Do not assume missing Discover placement means the code is dead. Approved islands move in and out of Discover, and unlisted islands never appear there.
- Do not treat “expired” as a confirmed timer. Epic has not published one universal public-code expiration period.
- Do not distribute a private code as a public map link. Private versions are for testing and are not publicly accessible.
- Do not reinstall Fortnite to fix a server-side state. Reinstallation cannot publish, approve, or re-enable an island.
- Do not keep retrying a failed private publication without waiting. Epic’s specified interval for the “PRIVATE CODE FAILED” error is 24–48 hours before another attempt.
When to contact Epic Support
Players should first obtain the exact code and ask the creator to verify its release state. Contact Epic through the appropriate support route when the creator confirms an active public release, Epic’s status channels show no relevant incident, and the same code still fails consistently. Include the exact error wording, when it occurred, your platform, and whether another player can load the island; those details help distinguish a code-state problem from an account or service issue.
Creators should contact Epic Support when Creator Portal continues to show “PRIVATE CODE FAILED” after the recommended 24–48-hour wait, or when a moderation and resubmission path does not resolve a clearly documented disablement. Keep the project and release information available when submitting the request.

Start with the digits, then verify the release. A correct code can still fail because it points to a private, unpublished, rejected, or disabled version; it can also work perfectly while remaining absent from Discover because it is unlisted or temporarily out of rotation. Epic does not document a universal expiration timer for public island codes, so an “expired” message calls for a publication, moderation, and service-health check rather than a date-based assumption.
