To enable two-factor authentication for Fortnite, sign in to the Epic Games account linked to the Fortnite profile, then go to Account > Password and security. Under Two-Factor Authentication, choose Set up beside an available method, complete its verification, and confirm that Epic shows it as active. Epic lists Epic Authenticator, third-party authenticator apps, email codes, and SMS codes; it recommends authenticator apps for the strongest protection among these options.
Enable 2FA on the Epic Games account you use for Fortnite
- Sign in to the Epic Games account connected to the Fortnite profile you want to protect. If you play on a console, make sure you are using the Epic account linked to that console profile.
- Open Account > Password and security.
- Find Two-Factor Authentication and choose Set up beside a method offered for your account and region.
- Complete the requested verification: enter a code from email, SMS, or an authenticator app, or approve the number-match prompt in Epic Authenticator.
- Check that the account page reports the method as active and look for Epic’s confirmation email.
If you enable more than one method, use the three-dot menu beside your preferred method and choose Make my primary 2FA method. Epic’s interface labels and available options can change; follow the choices currently shown in your account.
Which 2FA method should you choose?
Epic lists four method types. Its security guidance recommends authenticator apps and says they provide the strongest protection among its listed methods. That is Epic’s recommendation, not a claim based on independent comparative testing. Choose a method you can access reliably, and note that SMS availability varies by region.

Whichever method you use, protect the Epic account’s email and any linked console or social accounts: access to those accounts can affect your ability to access Epic. Epic also recommends using a unique password; a password manager can help generate and store strong, unique passwords, but it is not required to enable 2FA.

Recover access if you lose your authenticator or phone
At the 2FA prompt, choose Try another way and use email verification if it is offered. Epic also documents authenticator backup codes for account recovery; its instructions describe these as eight-digit codes supplied when authenticator 2FA is first enabled. Keep any recovery information somewhere you can access if your phone or authenticator is unavailable.
After you regain access, return to Account > Password and security and update the method as needed. If none of the offered alternatives work, use Epic Games Player Support’s account-recovery options.

Fix common Fortnite 2FA problems
Fortnite still says 2FA is inactive
Check that you enabled 2FA on the Epic Games account actually used to play Fortnite. Epic says the setting may have been enabled on a different account. Console players may also need to finish setting up their Epic account, including adding an email address, before enabling 2FA.
SMS setup is unavailable
Choose another method currently offered in your account. Epic’s regional SMS guidance lists country-specific changes, and supported regions or numbers can change over time.

An email verification code has not arrived
- Check that email is the method you are using and confirm which address is associated with the Epic account.
- Check your spam folder and allow a short delivery delay.
- If the code has not arrived after ten minutes, contact Epic Games Player Support.
