Check Epic’s live status page first. If it reports an incident affecting Fortnite or a related service, wait for Epic to resolve it and check again. If no matching incident appears, use Fortnite’s network stats and compare your connection under the same conditions in which the problem occurs. An operational status page is a useful signal, not proof that every regional, platform-specific, or individual issue has been ruled out.
How to tell whether Fortnite or your connection is the problem
No single error message or test proves the cause. Look for several clues together: whether Epic reports an incident, whether the problem follows your device across connections, whether Fortnite shows packet loss or unstable latency, and whether performance changes with Wi-Fi, Ethernet, or household network load.
| Clue | What it can suggest | What it cannot prove |
|---|---|---|
| Epic’s status page shows a matching incident | A reported Fortnite or related-service problem; wait for an update or resolution. | That every player, region, platform, or symptom is affected. |
| The same device works on another connection | The home network path or ISP may be involved. | That the router specifically is faulty or needs replacing. |
| Net Debug Stats show packet loss when the problem occurs | Data is being lost somewhere between your connection and the server. | Which part of the route—Wi-Fi, router, ISP, or another segment—is responsible. |
| Performance worsens during household downloads, uploads, or streams | Network load may be contributing, particularly if upload activity coincides with the issue. | That load is the only cause or that a service incident is absent. |
Check Epic’s live status before changing settings
Open the Epic Games Public Status page and inspect Fortnite and related game services. Epic advises checking service status when connection or matchmaking problems occur; if a relevant service is down, players may be unable to connect until the issue is resolved. Status is time-sensitive, so use the live page rather than relying on an older report or snapshot.
If the page shows a matching incident, wait for Epic’s update and try again afterward. If services appear operational, keep investigating: an operational indicator does not rule out a localized, platform-specific, or unreported problem.

Enable Fortnite’s network stats
- From the lobby, open Settings → Game UI.
- Enable Net Debug Stats and apply the setting.
- In a match, watch the displayed network information while the symptoms occur. Epic identifies red bars under the network stats as packet loss; a solid white line indicates no packet loss.
- Note whether the problem lines up with packet loss, high or unstable latency, or stats that look normal.
Epic explains that packet loss means data is being lost between your connection and the server. It recommends contacting your internet service provider (ISP) for help troubleshooting the connection. The indicator identifies a network-path problem, but it does not locate the fault in your Wi-Fi, router, ISP, or another part of the route. See Epic’s instructions for viewing network performance details in Fortnite.
Compare latency and packet loss under realistic conditions
Average ping is only one part of the picture. Epic recommends considering average latency, packet loss, and jitter. Its guidance says consistently more than about 1% packet loss can cause in-game problems, even if average ping is low. Treat that as Epic’s troubleshooting guidance, not a universal guarantee for every game, device, or network route.

- Dual-band Wi-Fi with 5 GHz speeds up to 867 Mbps and 2.4 GHz speeds up to 300 Mbps, delivering 1200 Mbps of total bandwidth¹. Dual-band routers do not support 6 GHz. Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
- Covers up to 1,000 sq. ft. with four external antennas for stable wireless connections and optimal coverage.
- Supports IGMP Proxy/Snooping, Bridge and Tag VLAN to optimize IPTV streaming

Test around the time Fortnite usually fails and under similar conditions. An idle connection can appear fine even when it struggles under load. Epic’s latency and ping troubleshooting guide includes platform-specific ping-test examples. As a rough comparison, note minimum and maximum latency alongside packet loss; large variation may help explain inconsistent performance, but it does not by itself identify the cause.
Isolate your home network path
- Compare Wi-Fi with Ethernet: If your device and router have Ethernet ports, try a cable and compare performance in the same circumstances. A cable must be long enough to reach safely between them. A better result on Ethernet points toward the wireless or local network path; it cannot resolve an Epic service outage.
- Reduce competing traffic: Pause large downloads, uploads, and video streams during a comparison. Epic notes that uploads can be disruptive because home connections often have less upload capacity.
- Try another connection if practical: For example, test the same device on a mobile hotspot. Epic’s error-specific guidance says that if the error stops on another connection, the player’s network is implicated. This is an isolation clue, not proof that the router needs replacing.
- Restart the modem and router: Epic includes this in its connection troubleshooting sequence. Retest afterward rather than assuming the restart has identified or fixed the underlying cause.
These comparisons are most useful when you change one condition at a time and keep the test close to the time the issue normally occurs. Epic’s connection troubleshooting guide covers additional topics, including device, proxy, DNS, and firewall checks. Advanced changes such as port forwarding are not a first-line step without a platform-specific reason.

Do not treat an error message as a diagnosis
Error wording can point you to a relevant help article, but it does not reliably distinguish an Epic-side incident from a home-network problem on its own. Epic’s matchmaking guidance says errors #1, #2, and #3 can be caused by maintenance or a network connection issue. The official guidance does not establish a universal error-code lookup that uniquely identifies which side is responsible. Check the status page and network evidence instead.
Epic’s matchmaking error #1, #2, and #3 guidance explains those possible causes.
