To improve Fortnite connectivity, first find out whether the problem is high ping, packet loss, or lag that appears only when your home network is busy. Then test the game’s network path, try a wired connection and reduce competing traffic, and use the results to decide whether to contact your ISP. A faster download-speed result by itself does not identify what is disrupting a match.
Identify the connection problem before changing settings
Ping, or latency, is the round-trip time for data to travel between your device and a Fortnite server. It is measured in milliseconds; lower ping is generally preferable. But a test to a different server or at a different time may not reflect the connection used in your match.
Separate the symptoms: consistently high ping suggests a slow or indirect route; packet loss means some data is not getting through; and spikes or intermittent lag can point to congestion or unstable Wi-Fi. The cause may be inside your home network, along your ISP’s route, or related to the matchmaking subregion. Epic says matchmaking may use a subregion within the selected region, balancing ping, queue times, and fairness.
Measure the Fortnite route
Epic Games Support lists test endpoints for Fortnite subregions and commands for Windows 11 and macOS. Use the endpoint for the region you want to investigate from Epic’s current instructions; the Virginia endpoint below is only an example, not a universal target.

- Windows 11: Open Command Prompt and run
ping ping-va.ds.on.epicgames.com -n 50. - macOS: Open Terminal and run
ping -c 50 ping-va.ds.on.epicgames.com.
Epic says these commands send 50 packets and report average latency. Check packet loss and the spread between minimum and maximum times as well as the average. Epic’s current troubleshooting guidance, accessed October 3, 2026, says packet loss should be 0% and that consistently more than about 1% can cause in-game problems. That is Epic’s troubleshooting guideline, not a universal threshold for every network.
Run the test when the problem occurs and, if possible, repeat it while the same kinds of downloads, uploads, or streams are active. An idle test can miss congestion that appears only under load. Epic cautions that this ping test uses ICMP, while Fortnite gameplay uses UDP; some networks may deprioritize ICMP, so a normal result does not conclusively clear the route used by a match.

Try the simplest home-network fixes first
- Restart the modem and router. Power-cycle the network equipment, allow it to reconnect, then test again.
- Compare Wi-Fi with Ethernet. If you play over Wi-Fi and your device supports Ethernet, connect it to the router and compare matches or tests under similar conditions. Epic notes that wireless signal loss can add delay. A cable is useful for this comparison, but it cannot fix an ISP route or a game-server issue. If a Windows PC has no Ethernet port, Microsoft notes that a USB-to-Ethernet adapter may be an option; check compatibility for your particular device.
- Pause competing traffic. Stop large downloads, uploads, and video streams while playing. Uploads can be especially disruptive because many home connections have less upload capacity than download capacity.
- Improve router placement. Put the router in an open, less obstructed location rather than a closet, basement, or blocked space.
- Check for router firmware updates. Follow the router maker’s instructions and update only when an appropriate update is available.
If you must stay on Wi-Fi, test both bands
Try 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz from the room where you play. Epic describes 2.4 GHz as longer-range but potentially more crowded, while 5 GHz can be faster over a shorter range. Walls, distance, and nearby networks affect the result, so compare stability in your actual setup rather than assuming one band is best.
Use traffic prioritization only if your router offers it
Some routers provide QoS, Smart Queue, or Gaming Mode controls. Check the manual and test the feature while the network is busy: it may prioritize game traffic over large transfers and steady ping. Router implementations vary, and prioritization may make little difference when the connection is not congested.

Adjust Fortnite’s subregion preference with the tradeoff in mind
In Fortnite, open Settings > Game > Language and Region and set Subregion Preference to the preferred option. Epic recommends this to land in that subregion more often, not to guarantee every match will use one fixed data center. Epic warns that this preference may increase queue times and reduce match quality.
For PC players, Epic also recommends pre-downloading High Resolution Textures through Fortnite’s options in the Epic Games Launcher. This is a PC-specific suggestion; it is not a general internet-speed upgrade.

When to contact your ISP or Epic Support
If ping stays high after the home-network checks, share the evidence rather than asking the ISP to troubleshoot a vague “slow connection.” Epic notes that a sudden ping increase is usually caused by how an ISP routes traffic, though that is not a diagnosis for every player.
- Record the tested host and command, the test result—including average time and packet loss—and the ping shown in Fortnite.
- Contact your ISP and explain that the diagnostic test uses ICMP, while Fortnite gameplay uses UDP. A normal ICMP result does not rule out a problem on the gameplay path.
- If the ISP cannot resolve the issue, contact Epic Support with the same details and identify the affected mode, such as Zero Build, Reload, or Ranked.
For a Windows PC using Ethernet that cannot connect, Microsoft’s Ethernet troubleshooting guidance recommends checking that the cable is seated in the correct router port, trying another cable, restarting the modem and router, and testing another device. Those checks can help isolate whether the issue is the PC, cable, adapter, router, or ISP; they are general Windows connectivity steps, not a Fortnite-specific fix.

What a better connection can—and cannot—fix
A steadier route can reduce delays and network-related interruptions, but these steps cannot guarantee a particular ping reduction. Epic networking engineer Bart Hawthorne explains that higher ping makes gameplay artifacts more likely, including players appearing to teleport, unexpected eliminations, and delays interacting with objects (Epic’s explanation of ping calculation improvements).
Do not assume that a faster download plan, new router, or gaming VPN will solve the problem. The checks above help distinguish wireless instability and household congestion from routing or server-region issues. Consider replacing a router only if comparisons point to the router itself; Epic notes a faulty router can affect performance, but a replacement will not correct a problem elsewhere on the route.
