Fortnite Sidekicks are cosmetic companions, not combat units. They stay beside your character, react to the surrounding world and can be addressed with Sidekick Emotes. Epic Games says they provide no gameplay advantage and do not take damage, so they cannot improve your weapons, movement, survivability, loot, win rate or competitive statistics.
Their value is visual and social: you can bring a customized companion into supported Fortnite experiences, give it a name and interact with it. Availability depends on how a particular Sidekick was released, and developer-made islands must enable the feature.

What Fortnite Sidekicks are
Epic Games describes Sidekicks as “friendly cosmetics that stay by your side.” In a match or other supported experience, a Sidekick accompanies your character as a visible companion. It may react to events or surroundings, but those reactions are presentation rather than a hidden gameplay system.
A Sidekick is therefore different from an AI teammate, a combat pet or an equipment item. It does not make decisions for you, attack opponents, defend you, reveal enemies, carry items or modify player statistics. The companion is designed to make your character feel more personal and expressive without changing the rules of a match.

What a Sidekick can do
- Remain visibly beside your character in supported experiences.
- React to the world around the player.
- Respond when you use a Sidekick Emote.
- Use a chosen or randomized name, subject to the naming controls available for that Sidekick.
- Display selected accessories and physical traits when the item supports customization.
What a Sidekick cannot do
- Deal damage or attack another player.
- Block, absorb or redirect incoming damage.
- Reveal opponents, chests or objectives.
- Pick up, carry or generate items.
- Increase movement speed, health, shields, accuracy or any other player statistic.
Do Sidekicks give you a gameplay advantage?
No. Epic’s support statement is explicit: “Sidekicks do not provide any gameplay advantage and don’t take damage.” That means the companion has no combat effectiveness to compare. A Sidekick cannot make a victory more likely through mechanics, and it cannot be used as a disposable target because attacks do not damage it.

In practical terms, choosing one is an appearance decision. You can select a companion because you like its design, animations or social presence, but not because it supplies a tactical benefit. Any apparent reaction during a match should be read as an animation or interaction, not as an indicator that the Sidekick has detected something for you.
How Sidekick Emotes work
Sidekick Emotes are the direct interaction method Epic identifies for these companions. They let you address the Sidekick through an emote rather than treating it as a separate playable character. The exact emote selection and on-screen controls can vary with platform and Fortnite’s current interface, but the purpose is the same: trigger a companion-focused reaction or animation.

Using an emote does not create a buff, reveal information or interrupt the Sidekick’s cosmetic-only status. It is an expressive feature for lobbies, matches and other supported spaces where the companion is visible.

Which Fortnite experiences support Sidekicks?
Epic lists several places where Sidekicks can appear. Visibility is not identical in every mode, and developer-made islands have an additional requirement.

Why a Creative or UEFN island may not show one
Sidekicks are not automatically available in every user-created island. Epic’s UEFN documentation describes them as NPCs that can be used in creature-based games and says a player’s own Sidekick can be brought into an island when the feature is enabled. If an island has not enabled Sidekicks, the companion may be hidden or unavailable even though it works elsewhere. That is an island configuration choice, not evidence that your cosmetic has been removed.
How to get a Fortnite Sidekick
There is no single permanent acquisition route. Epic has used Battle Pass rewards, Shop releases, ownership grants and cross-promotions. The following dates are historical announcements, not a promise of current stock; check the live Fortnite Shop and Battle Pass information before relying on availability.

Epic’s October 30, 2025 announcement said the first Sidekick, Peels, would unlock in the Battle Pass beginning November 1, 2025. A Battle Pass reward normally requires progressing through that pass under its stated rules. Because passes and seasons change, a Sidekick associated with a past pass may not be obtainable through a later pass unless Epic offers it again.

Item Shop releases
The same announcement listed Bonesy, Spike and Lil’ Raptor for the Item Shop on November 7, 2025. An announced Shop date identifies the original release window only. Shop availability can rotate, end or return, so do not treat that date as evidence that an item is currently purchasable or that a particular price still applies.
Ownership grants
Players who owned the Bonesy Back Bling were announced to receive the Bonesy Sidekick as a grant. This is an ownership-based entitlement rather than a general guarantee that every player can claim Bonesy now. Eligibility and delivery depend on Epic’s terms for that offer.
Cross-promotion offers
Epic says the Super Meat Boy Sidekick is an in-game cosmetic granted to qualifying purchasers of Super Meat Boy 3D beginning March 31, 2026. Epic also says it may make the cosmetic purchasable in the Fortnite Shop later. Refunding the qualifying purchase removes the granted Sidekick. The offer’s date, eligibility rules and any later Shop release should be checked against the current promotion terms before purchase.

How to customize a Sidekick
Customization is not unlimited. Epic’s support instructions say a Sidekick’s appearance can be customized one time after you obtain it, and not every Sidekick is customizable. The most important step is the confirmation control: after you hold LOCK-IN, the appearance choices become permanent for that Sidekick.

- Open the Sidekick’s customization controls from Fortnite’s Locker or the Sidekick management screen.
- Choose the available physical traits and appearance options. The controls shown depend on whether that Sidekick supports customization.
- Select a name or use the randomize option if you do not want to choose one manually.
- Review the complete design before confirming. Check the physical traits, accessories and name separately because they do not all follow the same change rules.
- Hold LOCK-IN to confirm. Once the lock-in completes, the selected physical appearance cannot be freely redesigned.
Permanent traits versus changeable details
Epic’s announcement says names and accessories can be changed, while physical traits selected during the design process are permanent. That distinction matters: changing a name later is not the same as resetting the Sidekick’s body or other locked physical features. Follow the controls shown for the specific item, because Epic does not state that every Sidekick exposes the same options.
Duplicate appearances
Duplicate appearances are not allowed across Sidekick instances. If you own multiple Sidekicks, the appearance system may prevent you from assigning an identical design to more than one instance. This restriction is separate from the rule that each individual Sidekick has a one-time appearance lock-in.

Since Epic rules out gameplay advantages, a sensible comparison focuses on ownership and presentation rather than power. Use these questions when deciding which one fits your account:
- How is it obtained? Identify whether the route is a Battle Pass, Item Shop, ownership grant or cross-promotion.
- Is it currently available? Historical launch dates do not establish present Shop stock or pass eligibility.
- Can it be customized? Customization is not universal, and the support documentation does not assign the same options to every Sidekick.
- Which traits become permanent? Physical design choices are locked after confirmation.
- What can be changed later? Names and accessories have separate rules from physical traits.
- Where will it be visible? Festival keeps the companion backstage, and an individual developer-made island must enable Sidekicks.
There is no meaningful “best” Sidekick for damage, defense, mobility or information gathering. The meaningful differences are design, animation, customization and the way each item entered your collection.

Common problems and what they mean
The Sidekick is missing in an island
First check whether you are in a developer-made experience. The island may not have enabled Sidekicks. In Fortnite Festival, check backstage rather than the active performance area, where Epic says the companion remains.
The appearance cannot be changed
Two explanations are supported by Epic’s rules: that particular Sidekick may not be customizable, or you may already have completed its one-time lock-in. Once you hold LOCK-IN, physical appearance choices are permanent.
A granted Sidekick disappeared after a refund
For the Super Meat Boy Sidekick promotion, Epic says refunding the qualifying purchase removes the granted cosmetic. That behavior is specific to the promotion’s terms and should not be assumed for unrelated Sidekicks.
A Sidekick seems to react to an opponent
Reactions are cosmetic behavior. Epic’s no-advantage rule means the Sidekick is not an enemy detector, warning system or tactical sensor, even when an animation happens near an in-game event.
