Fortnite Stuck on Matchmaking? How to Fix Matchmaking Errors

Check Epic’s live service status first, then restart Fortnite and work through network, device, and matchmaking-region checks if services are operational.

If Fortnite is stuck on “Matchmaking” or shows a matchmaking error, first check Epic Games Status. If matchmaking is listed as affected, wait for Epic to resolve the service issue and try again. If services are operational, restart Fortnite, then troubleshoot your connection and device in sequence. An error number by itself does not tell you whether the cause is Epic’s service or your network.

What Fortnite matchmaking errors mean

Epic uses several numbered matchmaking errors. Its help page says Error #5 appears when Fortnite is unable to connect you to a match. Errors #1, #2, and #3 are mainly associated with server maintenance or a network connection issue. These labels are clues, not a diagnosis: check service status before changing network settings.

Matchmaking can also be unavailable during maintenance. Epic’s guidance is to wait for resolution when its status page shows an affected service, then retry. The live status page is the place to check current conditions; an error code alone does not establish that Fortnite is down.

Work through these fixes in order

1. Check Epic’s service status

Open Epic Games Status and look for an incident or maintenance affecting Fortnite matchmaking. If matchmaking is affected, wait for the service to recover and retry rather than repeatedly changing your local settings.

2. Restart Fortnite

Close Fortnite completely, reopen it, and try matchmaking again. Epic specifically recommends restarting for Errors #5 and #7. If you see Error #1, #2, or #3 and the status page shows no affected service, continue with connection checks.

3. Restart your modem and router

Power-cycle your modem and router, then reconnect your device and retry. Epic includes a modem/router restart among its connection troubleshooting options. The exact power-cycle instructions can vary by equipment, so use your provider’s or router maker’s guidance if needed.

4. Reduce network congestion and test Ethernet

Pause large downloads and uploads, and reduce streaming or other heavy network use while you test. If you play over Wi-Fi, try a wired Ethernet connection if practical. Epic recommends Ethernet when troubleshooting latency; it can improve a weak or unstable local connection, but it cannot fix an Epic service outage.

5. Check the device-specific network settings

Epic’s general connection guide includes several additional checks, but they are not all relevant to every device. Follow the instructions for your platform rather than applying every item indiscriminately:

6. Run your console’s network test

On a console, use its built-in network test and check with your internet service provider for an outage or degraded service. Also check for Fortnite updates and try a full power cycle. If the issue continues, Epic recommends consulting the relevant platform support. Its guidance is available for testing a console’s network connection and console errors and performance issues.

When to change matchmaking region

Leave the matchmaking region set to Auto in most cases; Epic recommends it for the best connection. If you are investigating latency, you can test another region and compare the result, but a region change is not a guaranteed fix for a queue that will not start. Match servers can vary from match to match, and congestion or routing can affect latency.

For latency troubleshooting, Epic also recommends checking router placement and firmware. Its guides explain how to change Fortnite’s matchmaking region and how to lower ping in Fortnite.

How to narrow down the cause

Use the pattern of the problem to decide what to check next:

  • Status page shows an incident: wait for Epic’s service to recover, then retry.
  • Only one device has the problem: focus on that device’s updates, network test, cache, or platform-specific settings.
  • The problem changes when you use Ethernet or reduce other network traffic: investigate Wi-Fi quality, router placement, or network congestion.
  • The problem persists across devices or networks: check Epic’s status again and contact your ISP if there may be an outage or degradation.

These checks help isolate where to look; they do not prove a cause on their own. Epic’s troubleshooting guidance is published across its Error #1, #2, and #3 help page and its Error #5 and #7 help page.
