In its September 17, 2024 announcement, Epic said the system models human reaction time to better match how unassisted keyboard-and-mouse players track moving targets. That explains the stated design goal—not whether the change improved balance or how the system works in later versions.
What changed in Fortnite v31.20?
Epic’s v31.20 announcement said the update introduced “human-like aim assist” for controller players on console, PC and mobile. Epic described it as a system that models human reaction time while aiming to better match the way unassisted keyboard-and-mouse players track moving targets.
“Human-like” is Epic’s description of the design, not a published technical specification. The announcement does not provide numerical settings, reaction-time values, or a before-and-after measure of aim-assist strength.
Why did Epic make the change?
Epic said the system would allow “more balanced tuning for controller players of all skill levels.” The aim, as described by the publisher, was to make controller aim assist behave more like human tracking rather than provide a “superhuman” advantage. This is Epic’s rationale; it is not evidence that the change achieved a particular balance outcome.

In secondary reporting, developer Jibb Smart was quoted as saying the goal was “to remove the superhuman factor from aim assist,” and that the new system was “much less noticeable even though it does just as much work.” Those remarks were reported by GameScout; they are not wording from Epic’s announcement.
Did Epic call it a nerf?
Epic’s announcement framed the change as a redesign for more balanced tuning, not as a quantified nerf. Some coverage used “nerf” in headlines, but the announcement does not say how much aim assist was reduced, or establish a measured change in controller performance. Calling it a nerf without that qualification goes beyond what the official description documents.

Was tuning finished?
No. Epic said it would monitor the system’s impact so it could tune it further. Dexerto reported Smart saying, “We’re not finished tuning aim assist.” That is a secondary report of his comment, rather than a statement in the patch announcement.

What the announcement does—and does not—establish
- Established: Epic announced the feature for controller players on console, PC and mobile as part of v31.20 on September 17, 2024.
- Established: Epic said it modeled human reaction time and sought to better match unassisted keyboard-and-mouse tracking of moving targets.
- Not established: A percentage change, measured effect on accuracy, controlled comparison between input methods, or demonstrated impact on competitive balance. The announcement and cited coverage provide no such result.
- Not established: Whether later Fortnite updates retained the same implementation or whether the feature currently behaves identically across platforms. The v31.20 announcement is a dated account of that update, not a current technical specification.
