If Fortnite will not connect after an outage, check Epic Games Public Status before changing settings. The page separates Fortnite, Login, Game Services, and Matchmaking, and shows incident history. If any relevant service is degraded, wait for the incident to move to resolved, then fully close and relaunch Fortnite. If every service is operational, isolate your connection by restarting your network equipment, disabling VPN or proxy software, and testing a mobile hotspot or wired connection.
The result of that comparison is useful: a working hotspot points to your home network or ISP, while failure on every connection with Epic services operational is a reason to contact Epic Player Support with the exact error code.

During the documented status capture, all four components were operational. The history showed scheduled Fortnite v42.40 downtime beginning October 15, 2026 at 08:00 UTC and ending at 10:02 UTC. It also showed an EOS Sessions and Lobbies incident on October 16, 2026, investigated at 22:20 UTC and resolved at 23:17 UTC. Those entries describe past events, not a guarantee about the service now; status can change minutes after you check it, so refresh the page immediately before troubleshooting.

How to read a status incident
Use the component that matches the symptom rather than assuming that a green Fortnite label means every feature is available. A login incident can prevent authentication while the game itself appears operational. A Game Services or Matchmaking incident can let you sign in and reach the lobby but prevent a queue from starting. Read the incident description and its latest update, note whether Epic says it is investigating, identified, or monitoring, and check again after the next update. The status history is useful for confirming that a recent outage really ended, but it cannot predict the next interruption.
Use the symptom to choose the right recovery path

Run the least disruptive check first. Status checking costs nothing and avoids unnecessary reinstalls. A hotspot test uses mobile data, so check your plan and stop the test if it could create an overage. Ethernet requires a cable long enough to reach the router, but it is a temporary diagnostic as well as a possible stable connection for downloads.
Fix login failures after an outage
When Epic still reports a login incident
Epic’s login guidance covers incidents that prevent signing in or updating account services and directs players to Fortnite Status for updates. If Login is listed as degraded or under investigation, waiting is the correct action. Repeated password changes, reinstalls, and router resets cannot repair an authentication service that is unavailable upstream.

Keep your credentials unchanged unless Epic specifically asks you to reset them, and avoid submitting many identical login attempts while the service is recovering.
When Login is operational again
- Close Fortnite completely rather than leaving it suspended in the background.
- Wait a few seconds, start the game again, and sign in.
- If the login succeeds, remain in the lobby briefly before starting matchmaking; this allows the game-services session to be recreated after the incident.
- If the same login error returns, capture the exact wording and code, note the time in UTC, and check the status page again before changing local settings.
A successful sign-in but failed matchmaking is a different problem. Continue with the error-specific checks below instead of treating it as an account outage. If another device on the same account can sign in, that comparison points toward the first device or its network path, not necessarily the account.
Understand matchmaking errors #1, #2, and #3
Epic says Matchmaking Errors #1, #2, and #3 are mainly caused by server maintenance or a network connection issue. The status page therefore comes first:

- If Matchmaking or Game Services is degraded, wait for the incident to be resolved and retry.
- If Epic lists all services as operational, restart Fortnite completely.
- Run the connection isolation steps in the network section, beginning with the modem and router restart.
Do not infer that a particular number identifies a unique hardware failure. These three codes share the same broad causes, so the service-state versus local-connection comparison is more informative than the number alone.
If the code appears on several devices connected to the same home network, the shared network path is a stronger suspect. If it appears on one device only, record that device’s platform and continue with its firewall, proxy, and background-application checks. Either way, keep the number exactly as shown; changing #1, #2, or #3 into a general “connection error” makes support diagnosis harder.
Understand matchmaking errors #5 and #7
Epic defines Matchmaking Error #5 as appearing when Fortnite is unable to connect you to a match. Error #7 is handled in the same practical category: the game could not connect you to a match. For either code:
- Check Epic Games Public Status, including the Matchmaking component and incident history.
- Close and relaunch Fortnite after confirming services are operational.
- If the error persists with no incident listed, follow the modem, router, VPN, proxy, and alternate-connection checks below.
Reaching the lobby proves that authentication worked; it does not prove that the network path to matchmaking is healthy. That distinction explains why login can succeed while a match still fails. Do not repeatedly queue while an incident is active, because repeated attempts add no diagnostic information and can make it harder to tell when service recovery actually occurred.
Clear ESP and general network errors
1. Restart every part of the local path
- Exit Fortnite.
- Power off the modem and router. Wait until they finish shutting down, then power them back on and allow the connection lights to stabilize.
- Restart the PC or console.
- Launch Fortnite and test once before making another change.
This sequence clears temporary router state and creates a new session with the ISP. Restarting only the game does not reset that path. If the modem and router are separate boxes, restart both; if your provider supplies a combined gateway, restart that single unit according to its normal power procedure.

2. Remove tunnel and proxy variables
Temporarily disable VPN software and any system or browser proxy. A tunnel can route Epic traffic through a congested or blocked endpoint, while a proxy can prevent the game client from reaching required services. Test Fortnite with both disabled, then restore them one at a time if you need them for other activities. Note which setting was changed and return it to its previous state after testing; leaving security software disabled is not a permanent fix.

3. Compare an independent connection
Enable a mobile hotspot and connect the gaming device to it. Use the same Epic account and the same Fortnite installation so that only the network path changes. Keep the test short; mobile data may incur charges or have a usage cap. Do not download a large update over the hotspot unless you have confirmed the allowance and cost with your carrier.
- Hotspot works: the evidence points to the home router, Wi-Fi interference, local firewall rules, or the ISP path. Contact the ISP if router checks do not resolve it.
- Hotspot also fails: the fault is less likely to be limited to home Wi-Fi. Check the status page again, preserve the exact error, and contact Epic Player Support if services remain operational.
4. Test Ethernet when possible
Connect the device directly to the router with Ethernet and retry. Epic states: “A wired connection is more stable than Wi-Fi for large downloads.” Ethernet is also a useful diagnostic: if wired works while Wi-Fi fails, investigate wireless signal quality, channel congestion, or router settings. A wired connection cannot repair an Epic outage; it only tests whether the Wi-Fi leg is responsible. If you buy an Ethernet cable, use it for this A/B test first rather than assuming the purchase will fix a service-side incident.

Run comparisons on the same device first. If several devices on the same home network fail while a hotspot works, the network is a stronger suspect than the individual Fortnite installation. If only one PC or console fails while other devices can use Fortnite on that network, focus on that device’s firewall, proxy, background software, or local network configuration.

Record the time and result of each deliberate test so support can see a pattern rather than a collection of guesses.
Windows checks after Epic services are confirmed operational
Epic’s Windows-oriented guidance includes flushing DNS, resetting the Windows Hosts file, allowing Epic domains through security software, disabling background applications, and checking firewall and proxy settings. Apply these checks one at a time and record the result after each change; changing everything together removes the evidence needed to identify the cause. These steps are for a confirmed operational service, not a substitute for waiting through an outage.
Flush the DNS cache
- Open Command Prompt as administrator.
- Run
ipconfig /flushdns. - Wait for the confirmation that the DNS resolver cache was flushed.
- Restart Fortnite and test again.
This clears cached name-resolution data on Windows. It does not change your router or ISP configuration. If the command reports an error, record it rather than repeatedly running unrelated commands.

Review the Hosts file and firewall
Check that the Windows Hosts file has not been edited to redirect or block Epic services. Review firewall and security software rules as well, and whitelist the Epic domains identified in Epic’s current support instructions. Do not copy domain lists from unverified forums; the required endpoints can change. Make a backup or note the original rule before editing, and restore any temporary exception that does not affect the test.
Check proxy and background applications
In Windows network settings, ensure an unintended system proxy is disabled. Temporarily close background applications that inject network traffic, overlay game sessions, or consume substantial bandwidth. Retest Fortnite after each category of change, then restore software that was not responsible. Avoid disabling every security feature permanently; the goal is a controlled comparison, not an unprotected system.
Platform and account boundaries
The documented troubleshooting covers broad network behavior and includes additional Windows checks. It does not establish one universal menu path for every console, launcher, or router model. On consoles, use the platform’s normal full-quit and network-test functions, then perform the same hotspot comparison. On any platform, preserve the exact error text, number, device model, network type, and time of failure before contacting support.
Do not assume that reinstalling the launcher, changing DNS providers, or rebuilding a console database is required simply because Fortnite follows an outage. Those actions are platform-specific and can consume time or bandwidth without distinguishing a service incident from a local fault. Start with status, restart, and an independent connection; only then consider platform-specific maintenance that Epic or the platform maker explicitly recommends.

Escalate when all of the following are true: Epic Games Public Status shows Fortnite, Login, Game Services, and Matchmaking as operational; you have fully restarted Fortnite and the network equipment; VPN and proxy software are disabled; and the error reproduces on both the home connection and an independent hotspot or other connection.
Include the exact code, a screenshot if possible, your platform, whether login succeeds, whether matchmaking alone fails, and the connection tests you performed. If the hotspot works, contact the ISP or router manufacturer first because the comparison implicates the home path. If every connection fails while Epic is operational, Epic support is the appropriate next escalation. Include UTC timestamps, especially when the status page has recently changed, and mention whether another device on the same network reproduces the error.

What not to do during an outage
- Do not reinstall Fortnite before checking service status; an outage is not repaired by reinstalling local files.
- Do not change several network settings simultaneously; you will lose the ability to tell which change mattered.
- Do not treat one successful lobby login as proof that matchmaking is healthy.
- Do not assume a matchmaking number alone identifies a unique hardware defect; Errors #1, #2, and #3 share server-maintenance and connection causes.
- Do not keep retrying indefinitely during a confirmed incident. Wait for the status update, then relaunch once services recover.
- Do not leave a VPN, proxy, firewall exception, or security feature disabled after the test unless you understand the security impact.
- Do not use a mobile hotspot for a long update without checking data limits and charges.
