Choose Fortnite Zero Build if you want battle royale fights without building, where weapons, items, cover, and movement shape your decisions. Choose Apex Legends if you want squad play organized around characters with distinct abilities and tactical coordination. Neither is objectively the better fit for everyone; your preferred combat style, mode, and device matter most.
How the combat feels different
Fortnite Zero Build: fights without player-built structures
Zero Build removes building from this Fortnite mode. Epic describes it as a test of weapon, item, and traversal ability. Instead of constructing defenses, you use the terrain and available cover, and rely on movement options including mantling and sprinting. A recharging Overshield provides an additional first defensive layer. These features make Zero Build distinct from Fortnite’s building modes; they do not mean the game has no defensive choices or that positioning stops mattering.
Apex Legends: squad tactics and Legend abilities
Apex centers its combat on a roster of named characters, called Legends, with distinct skills. EA describes tactical squad play as a core part of the game. Teammates can combine their abilities, coordinate movement and fights, and communicate through detailed pings as well as voice chat. If you enjoy choosing a character role and adapting your decisions to a coordinated team, that structure is a major reason to try Apex.

Modes and match formats
Apex’s official modes hub lists Battle Royale, Mixtape, and Wildcard. Its home page describes classic Battle Royale matches as 60-person matches, but that number should not be assumed for every Apex mode or limited-time playlist. Modes and rotations may change, so check the in-game playlist if you are choosing based on a specific format.

Fortnite’s March 29, 2022 Zero Build launch announcement listed Solo, Duos, Trios, and Squads. That is launch-era information, not a guarantee that all four playlist sizes are available at any later date. Check the current in-game playlist for what is available now.
Is Apex Legends harder than Fortnite Zero Build?
There is no publisher-provided or independently measured difficulty comparison in the cited official material, so it would be misleading to call one definitively harder. The more useful question is which kind of learning you prefer: Zero Build asks you to make decisions around weapons, items, cover, and traversal without building; Apex adds Legend abilities and a strong emphasis on squad coordination. Your experience will also depend on your familiarity with battle royale games, chosen character, teammates, and current playlist.

Can you play Fortnite or Apex on your console or mobile device?
Fortnite’s official compatibility information lists PC, PlayStation, Xbox, Nintendo Switch, Android, and specified iOS/iPadOS devices. That does not guarantee compatibility with every device, nor does it guarantee that every regional store path is the same. Epic points players to separate system requirements.
EA lists Apex Legends for PlayStation 4 and 5, Xbox One and Series X|S, Nintendo Switch, and PC through the EA App and Steam. Its FAQ says players can party across currently supported platforms. The official platform lists cited here do not establish equivalent mobile support for Apex and Fortnite. Check the publisher’s current support information for your exact device and location before deciding.

Progress, cost, and current changes
Both games are free to play. EA notes that Apex includes in-game purchases; you do not need to buy optional items simply to try the game.
For Fortnite, Epic says purchases and progress can be accessible across linked platforms using the same Epic account, with V-Bucks as an exception: not all V-Bucks transfer between platforms. Do not assume that every currency balance is shared.

Apex’s balance is seasonal. EA’s September 14, 2026 Marked midseason notes say Split 2 begins September 15 and describe changes involving Legend balance, loot availability, and weapons. Those patch details are a dated snapshot, not a lasting reason to pick Apex over Zero Build; balance and playlists can shift over time.

- Try Apex Legends if distinct character abilities, teammate coordination, and a selection of modes appeal to you.
