Fortnite’s new “Roll & Tumble” gives knocked players another way to escape immediate danger: roll to dodge fire, or tumble down a slope. That makes it a potentially useful Down But Not Out (DBNO) option, but December 2025 coverage also described players ragdolling unpredictably on slopes. The escape purpose is official; the chaotic behavior is a reported observation, not a confirmed bug or a measured test.
What Fortnite’s new rolling does
Epic introduced “Roll & Tumble” in the Chapter Seven v39.00 update notes on November 29, 2025. The feature is for players who are downed—also called Down But Not Out, or DBNO. Epic describes its intended use as: “Roll to dodge fire or throw yourself down a slope to tumble away from danger.” Epic Games’ v39.00 update notes
In other words, rolling is an escape option after a player has been knocked, not a general movement ability for an active player. Epic’s description presents two uses: evade incoming fire with a roll, or use a slope to move away by tumbling.
Why it can feel great—and why it can feel busted
The upside: another chance to get clear
A knocked player is vulnerable, so any way to move out of immediate danger could help them avoid an opponent long enough for a teammate to intervene or for the fight to shift. A December 2, 2025 article republished by iQOO Community described players using rolling to escape, and its author said they had lost sight of knocked opponents as they moved away. That is an anecdotal account, not a measured comparison showing that rolling is faster or more effective than other options. iQOO Community’s December 2 coverage

The downside: reported loss of control on slopes
The same article reported that players rolling down slopes could ragdoll uncontrollably. If that happens, a movement option meant to get away may be difficult to steer. The report does not establish how often it occurs, whether it happens in every match, or whether the behavior is a bug; the article itself said it was unclear whether the ragdolling was intended or a glitch.
Rolling is part of a broader set of DBNO options
Epic’s v39.00 notes introduced several ways for downed players to move or reposition. They distinguish rolling from other options, including a sprint that uses Energy and the ability to use ziplines, ascenders, and a car’s passenger seat while DBNO. Epic Games’ v39.00 update notes

Epic’s November 29, 2025 notes document the feature’s intended purpose at launch. The December 2 article records a contemporaneous player-facing observation about slope behavior. Neither source establishes how rolling behaves in Fortnite as of October 8, 2026, whether Epic has since tuned it, or whether the reported ragdolling was fixed. There is also no measured roll-speed result in these sources. So “busted” is fair as a description of the reported loss of control, but not a verified diagnosis of a bug or a claim about the mechanic’s present balance.
