There is no single best Fortress Saga lineup for every player: hero value depends on the activity, the abilities and synergies a team needs, and which heroes you can actually promote. The available English and Japanese tier lists also differ in date, region, and mode coverage, so use them as dated guides—not as a universal or official ranking.
Which Fortress Saga tier list should you use?
Start by checking a list’s date, game version, region, and mode. The English Global guide is adapted from the Japanese game, covers version 2.1.02, and was updated September 16, 2026. The Japanese ranking was updated October 6, 2026, and separates PvE stages, PvE bosses, and PvP. Neither source establishes that its ranking is an official developer list, and their placements should not be merged into one roster order.
In the English guide, S+ examples include Anubis, Yuyan, Ryo, Beatrice, Violet, Malleus, Ruingaladh, Styria, Iris, Ungula, Mael, Mephisto, Luna, Iblis, Milena, Kahula, Laios, Marcille, Chilchuck, Tails, and Gildong. Its S tier includes Water Mage, Hoya, Darcille, Winter, Zelos, Jibril, Valentine, Rei, Yaksha, Metal, Senshi, Sonic, Knuckles, Shadow, and Louis. The guide also has A, B, and C tiers, but those labels are judgments in that guide—not measured performance scores or guarantees of results.
For a mode-specific view, the October 6 Japanese list places Violet, Ruingaladh, Iris, Lan Hua, Young Solum, and others in its highest PvE stage tier, and evaluates featured hero Lumiel separately across modes. That scope is more useful when deciding between a wave-clearing team, a boss lineup, or a PvP roster than a broad list that does not separate those activities.

Why abilities matter more than a tier label
Tier placement can suggest which heroes a guide favors, but a hero’s contribution explains whether that recommendation fits your team. Pocket Gamer’s descriptions offer examples, not independent test results:
- Violet summons Shadow Soldiers and benefits from stat boosts supplied by other heroes.
- Malleus deals with enemy groups, can pull enemies together, and buffs Machina-trait allies.
- Styria heals and shields while passively increasing team HP.
- Winter deals area damage, can knock enemies back, and freezes a target after repeated hits.
- Zelos combines damage and control, including a stun against bosses.
- Jibril is described as a burst damage dealer against one or multiple targets.
These examples illustrate why the same hero may be more or less useful depending on the encounter. Area damage can help with waves, while boss utility, control, healing, or a trait-based buff may be more valuable in another fight.

Does rarity determine which hero you should use?
No. A high-ranked hero is not automatically the practical choice if you do not have access to that hero or cannot promote it. Pocket Gamer notes that players may need to upgrade lower-rarity heroes early. Kamigame’s beginner guide offers Hoya and Louis as examples for a limited roster: Hoya is described as helping with fortress enhancement and healing, while Louis offers area attacks and a skill-cooldown benefit. They are examples of possible early options, not a universal starter team.
Fortress Saga’s official Google Play listing describes defenders, damage dealers, tanks, and support units, and says team synergies are part of combat. Read each hero’s passive and active skills, including any trait requirements, and consider how they work together rather than selecting only by rarity or tier.

What does hero promotion cost?
Kamigame’s promotion guide describes promotion as using duplicate hero copies and Amplification Crystals. Its table reports these copy requirements for the successive star entries:
| Star entry | Hero copies required |
|---|---|
| First | 1 |
| Second | 3 |
| Third | 5 |
| Fourth | 7 |
| Fifth | 10 |
| Total through five stars | 26 |
The same guide lists total Amplification Crystal requirements through five stars by rarity:

These are guide-reported figures from a page last updated May 18, 2026, not a guarantee that costs remain unchanged after game updates. Check the in-game promotion screen before committing resources. Kamigame says crystals can come from stage and quest rewards and describes pickup or selection summons as ways to improve the chance of getting a chosen duplicate.
How to choose and build a team
- Choose the activity first. Decide whether you are building for PvE stages, a boss, or PvP. Those are separate evaluation categories in the Japanese list, and the useful balance of area damage, boss utility, control, and support can change with the task.
- Match roles and abilities. Decide what the lineup needs—damage, defense, tanking, healing, control, or buffs—then check skill and passive descriptions for synergies and trait conditions.
- Compare the investment you can make. Consider which heroes you own, how many duplicate copies you have, and the promotion materials available. A usable hero you can develop may be a better fit for your current account than a higher-ranked hero you cannot promote.
- Reassess as progression changes. New systems and account progress can affect recommendations. Kamigame’s beginner guide specifically points to Harmony Sanctum as relevant later; a best lineup cannot be determined without knowing your roster, progression, and target activity.
What should you compare when choosing between two heroes?
- Mode: stage waves, bosses, or PvP.
- Contribution: damage, defense, control, healing, buffs, or synergy with another hero.
- Availability and investment: copies and promotion materials you can spend.
- Progression: your current account stage and the systems you have unlocked.
The official game listing supports the role and synergy considerations; the dated tier lists and promotion and beginner guides provide the mode, investment, and progression context. Community advice about hero stats and priorities is anecdotal, so use in-game skill descriptions and your target activity as the deciding evidence.
