Forza Horizon 2 remains playable as an offline single-player racing game, but its online services closed in 2023. This review focuses on the Xbox One edition; the Xbox 360 release is a separate version, and the available evidence does not establish a full feature-by-feature comparison between them.
What this review covers
Forza Horizon 2 launched on September 30, 2014, for Xbox One and Xbox 360. Microsoft Game Studios published the game. Xbox identified Playground Games as the developer of the Xbox One version, set in Southern Europe. Its release announcement highlighted dynamic weather and a day-to-night progression; those were announced features, not findings from a new playthrough. Xbox Wire’s announcement has the release-era details.

The Xbox One edition is the focus here. The two releases should not be treated as interchangeable: the available sources confirm that both exist, but do not document their differences in enough detail to assign every gameplay or presentation feature to both.
How it holds up now
What still works
The practical case for playing Forza Horizon 2 today is its offline single-player mode. Forza says that single-player remains playable on Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S through backwards compatibility. That preserves access to the core solo experience for players with a compatible console, even though the game’s connected features are no longer available.

What has changed
Forza closed the game’s online services on August 22, 2023. Do not buy it expecting matchmaking, leaderboards, or online user-generated functions to work. The closure notice specifies the continued single-player availability and the date services ended: Forza’s service-status notice.
Xbox One vs. Xbox 360
| Question | Xbox One edition | Xbox 360 edition |
|---|---|---|
| Release | Released September 30, 2014; Playground Games is identified as developer for this version by Xbox. | Released September 30, 2014; the cited release announcement confirms the platform, but does not identify its developer. |
| Play today | Forza says single-player remains playable on Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S through backwards compatibility. | The cited service notice does not establish current backwards-compatibility support or the present status of offline play on Xbox 360. |
| Feature comparison | A comprehensive feature-by-feature comparison is not established by the available sources. Do not assume the editions share every design or presentation detail. | |
| Online services | Forza’s notice says the game’s online services closed August 22, 2023; it does not provide a separate platform-by-platform feature inventory. | |
Choose the Xbox One edition if your priority is the version whose continued solo availability on Xbox One and Series X|S is explicitly confirmed. If considering an Xbox 360 copy, check the specific platform and compatibility requirements rather than assuming that the Xbox One edition’s support applies.

Reception and where to find a copy
GameSpot’s review page records an 8/10 score from Kevin VanOrd, a useful historical reception point rather than a measure of how the game fits every player today. GameSpot’s review page and Metacritic’s product and review page provide additional historical review references.
A physical Xbox One copy is the most direct match for someone seeking the reviewed edition. Stock, price, and condition vary; confirm the platform and condition on any listing, especially when buying used.
