Some Fortnite players want OG matches to feel like battles against other people, not opponents they suspect are bots. But complaints do not establish how many bots are in OG lobbies, and Epic has not published a current bot count for every OG queue. A bot-free, no-SBMM OG Expert option was reported in July 2025; that dated report does not confirm the mode is available now.
Why some Fortnite OG players object to bots
For players drawn to Fortnite OG’s throwback feel, human opponents are part of the appeal: their choices are less predictable, and a win can feel more earned. Players who think they are facing bots may instead find the match unsatisfying, especially if bots are hard to distinguish from people.

That sentiment appears in a FortniteBR discussion whose title calls the bot problem “completely out of control.” Individual commenters say things like “They just need to add a bot-free version” and “I don’t like the bots in my game.” Other participants argue bots make the game more approachable for casual players. These comments illustrate a disagreement; they are not a poll and cannot establish how common either view is or how many bots appear in a match. Read the discussion on Reddit.
What Epic said bots and matchmaking were for
In an October 3, 2019 post, Epic said, “As we’ve previously mentioned, we’re adding Bots as a way to help players improve their skill level.” The post described matchmaking intended to group players of similar skill across platforms and control inputs, with Epic saying its goal was “to create fairer matches for all of our players, which includes special considerations for each platform.” Those statements explain Epic’s rationale at the time; they are not a guarantee about how every current OG queue works. - The Fortnite – Darkfire & Ice Bundle includes 10+ cosmetics and 1,000 V-Bucks!
Epic also said an all-bot match was being considered as a way to practice and explore the map. That was a separate idea from ordinary matchmaking, not a statement that standard OG lobbies would be all bots or that an all-bot practice mode was the same as regular OG matchmaking.
What the July 2025 OG Expert report established
On July 29, 2025, GameSpot reported that Fortnite OG Duos Expert had no bots and no skill-based matchmaking (SBMM). It also warned that removing SBMM could expose beginners to much stronger players, including pro-level opponents. That makes Expert a different trade-off from a mode designed to match players by skill: fewer suspected bot encounters, but less protection from a wide skill gap. Read GameSpot’s report.

Regular Duo and Duo (Expert): the reported trade-off
| Reported mode, July 2025 | Bots | SBMM | Likely trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Regular Duo | GameSpot’s comparison identifies Expert as the no-bot mode; it does not establish a precise bot count for regular Duo. | GameSpot describes Expert as the no-SBMM mode; it does not provide a current policy or exact matching details for regular Duo. | Do not infer an exact bot rate or skill spread from the report. |
| Duo (Expert) | None, as GameSpot reported on July 29, 2025. | None, as GameSpot reported on July 29, 2025. | Better fit for players seeking bot-free matches at that time; the absence of SBMM could mean a much wider skill spread, including very strong opponents. |
The comparison reflects that dated report only. It does not verify today’s mode lineup or the bot composition of other OG queues.

Is the “up to 90%” bot figure an OG statistic?
No. PC Gamer’s August 6, 2025 opinion article repeated a figure of “up to 90%” of an average 100-player Fortnite lobby, citing Polygon. The figure is a secondary claim, not an Epic statistic; the reviewed article does not establish its measurement method, and it is not specific to Fortnite OG. It should not be used as a verified estimate of bots in an OG match. Read PC Gamer’s article.
Epic’s support page directs players to its blog posts for information about bots and Battle Royale matchmaking. The official material reviewed does not state a current bot count for every OG queue, region, or skill level. That leaves the prevalence question unanswered—not proof that bots are absent, nor proof that they dominate. See Epic’s support page on bots.

What players can—and cannot—do about it
If your priority is avoiding bots, look for a currently listed mode whose bot-free status is explicitly confirmed; the July 2025 Expert report is not enough to assume it is still available. If your priority is closer skill matching, a no-SBMM mode may be a poor fit. For players who mainly want an easier, less punishing match, bots may be a benefit rather than a flaw.
There is no reliable way to infer a lobby’s bot count from an anecdotal thread or the secondary “up to 90%” figure. Nor should players use cheat devices as a workaround. Epic’s February 27, 2025 anti-cheat update says Cronus hardware and other devices that offer a competitive advantage are restricted and may lead to a cheating ban. Read Epic’s anti-cheat update.

- An Epic Games account is required to redeem an Epic Games Store Card code
- If playing on a console platform (PlayStation Network, Xbox Live, Nintendo Switch or Mobile) you need to link your Epic Games account to that gaming platform (one time) to redeem your gift card code
- The 16 digit code on the back of the card WILL NOT work if redeemed directly through your gaming platform (PlayStation Network, Xbox Live, Nintendo Switch, Mobile, etc.)
- Note: Nintendo devices do not support Fortnite Shared Wallet, so V-Bucks purchased using your account balance will not show up on your Nintendo device. However, if you purchase items in the web Item Shop — or another platform where you play Fortnite — those items will be available in your Locker across all platforms.

What the evidence supports
- Some players dislike suspected bots and want a bot-free option; other players value bots as a more approachable opponent. The cited Reddit discussion is anecdotal, not representative polling.
- Epic’s 2019 post described bots as a way to help players improve and matchmaking as an effort to create fairer matches. It does not establish current OG behavior.
- GameSpot reported a bot-free, no-SBMM OG Duos Expert mode in July 2025. That report does not confirm current availability.
- No current, primary, OG-specific bot percentage is established by the cited material.
