Forza Horizon 3 is a 2016 open-world racing game built around a festival you bring to Australia. Its most distinctive strengths, based on the available evidence, are the range of its Australian environments and two expansions with sharply different driving fantasies: snowy mountain roads in Blizzard Mountain and elaborate stunt tracks in Hot Wheels. A 2026 retrospective by TechRadar describes the handling as approachable and arcade-like, with extra challenge available by turning off assists; that is one writer’s assessment, not a broad critical consensus or a fresh hands-on test.
What is Forza Horizon 3?
Released worldwide on September 27, 2016, Forza Horizon 3 is an open-world racing game for Xbox One and Windows 10 PC. Microsoft pitched it as an Australian automotive adventure and described the game as bringing the Horizon Festival to what it called “the most beautiful and diverse setting yet in the series.” Microsoft’s Windows Experience Blog launch announcement also stated that the game included more than 350 vehicles at launch; that is a launch-era figure, not a current inventory audit. Forza.net’s retrospective confirms the release date.
The festival premise gives the game a useful twist on the usual racing progression: you are not only entering events but building the festival in a large, condensed version of Australia. The setting and the freedom to move between different kinds of terrain are central to its appeal.
How varied is the Australian map?
Xbox’s product description names the Outback, rocky canyons, rainforest, beaches, and Gold Coast skyscrapers as parts of the game’s condensed Australian world. The Xbox product page cautions that features may vary between the Xbox One and Windows 10 versions, but does not enumerate those differences.

That environmental range gives the base game more visual and driving contrast than a setting built around one landscape. Coastal roads, rainforest, rugged inland areas, and city streets each change the scenery as you travel between festival events. TechRadar’s April 2026 retrospective praises this variety and characterizes the driving as easy to approach, with optional depth if you disable assists. Treat those as a single reviewer’s impressions: the evidence here does not establish a consensus review score or fresh performance testing.
What do the expansions add?
The expansions are most distinct when compared by the kind of driving world they create. Blizzard Mountain takes the festival into a snowy, high-elevation area; Hot Wheels trades natural roads for a fantastical network of elevated stunt tracks.

| Expansion | Driving environment | What it emphasizes |
|---|---|---|
| Blizzard Mountain | Snowy, high-elevation playable area | Mountain driving in winter conditions |
| Hot Wheels | Six islands linked by looping and banked track | Boost pads, half-pipes, jumps, and mechanical dinosaurs |
Blizzard Mountain
Microsoft announced Blizzard Mountain in December 2016 as a standalone purchase or as part of the Expansion Pass. Its defining change is the terrain: the snowy mountain environment provides a clear contrast to the base game’s Australian landscapes. Microsoft’s announcement establishes those launch-era purchase options; it does not establish current availability.
Hot Wheels
Launched in May 2017 for Xbox One and Windows 10 PC, Hot Wheels expands the game with six islands and track built for spectacle: loops, banked curves, boost pads, half-pipes, jumps, and mechanical dinosaurs. Forza’s retrospective describes the expansion’s features. It is the more overtly fantastical choice, turning the landscape itself into a stunt course rather than simply adding another natural region.

Is Forza Horizon 3 still worth playing?
If you want an open-world racer with a festival structure, varied scenery, and expansions that offer meaningfully different driving environments, the evidence supports Forza Horizon 3 as a compelling older entry to consider. Its central contrast is clear: the base game ranges across a stylized Australia, Blizzard Mountain adds snow and elevation, and Hot Wheels leans into engineered stunt spectacle. TechRadar’s retrospective offers a positive view of its approachable handling and environmental variety, but one review cannot stand in for a full consensus or a comparison with later entries.
