Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteIf Forza Horizon 4 started crashing right after an NVIDIA GPU driver update, the driver is a reasonable suspect—but timing alone does not prove it caused the crash. Start with reversible checks, verify the game files, then compare a reinstall of the current driver with a rollback to the last driver that worked on your PC.
Before troubleshooting, record what changed
Write down the NVIDIA driver version, GPU model, Windows version and build, game storefront, and where the crash occurs: at launch, on the Forza splash screen, while loading, or during play. Also note whether other games are crashing. These details help distinguish an FH4-specific problem from a wider driver or system-stability issue.
A crash following a driver update is not proof of causation. A game or Windows update, background software, an overclock, heat, power, or another hardware issue can also contribute. NVIDIA’s graphics-card troubleshooting guidance recommends checking game updates and files, recent driver changes, background programs, overclocking, and hardware conditions.
Try the low-risk fixes first
- Restart Windows. After rebooting, launch FH4 before reopening nonessential applications.
- Close overlays and background utilities. Temporarily disable NVIDIA and game overlays, monitoring tools, browsers, and other unnecessary programs. Background software can interfere with games.
- Return overclocks to stock settings. Temporarily remove GPU, CPU, and memory overclocks to see whether system tuning is contributing to instability.
- Verify or repair the game files. Use the current verify/repair option in the storefront where you own FH4. The exact menu path differs between Steam and the Xbox app or Microsoft Store, so follow that storefront’s current instructions.
Decide whether to reinstall or roll back the NVIDIA driver
If the crash began immediately after the driver change and the checks above did not help, test the driver hypothesis. NVIDIA recommends reinstalling its display driver using its recommended method after a recent update; Microsoft Q&A also suggests trying a prior graphics driver when a problem begins after an update. A rollback is a diagnostic test for this PC, not a guaranteed fix.

| Option | When it makes sense | What the result tells you |
|---|---|---|
| Reinstall the current driver | The installation may have gone wrong, or the current release is the driver you want to keep testing. | If FH4 works afterward, the installation may have been a factor; it does not by itself establish why the crash occurred. |
| Roll back to the last known-working driver | The failure appeared directly after the update, and you know which driver previously worked on this PC. | If FH4 stops crashing, that supports a driver-related explanation for this setup. It does not establish a universal fix for other GPUs or systems. |
Check the NVIDIA driver download page and release archive for your GPU and Windows version. NVIDIA’s archive currently lists driver 616.92, dated September 9, 2026, but its visible current entries do not identify a universal FH4 crash fix. For notebook PCs, the archive notes that the manufacturer may provide a certified driver for that specific system.
Do not assume an older version mentioned in a report is right for your computer. Windows Central reported in November 2025 that driver 576.88 worked around problems affecting older Forza titles after an update; that is dated context, not proof that 576.88 fixes every FH4 crash or is appropriate for every GPU and driver branch.

Check whether NVIDIA has documented your exact symptom
NVIDIA’s driver notes identify two specific Forza Horizon 4 issues, neither of which establishes a general crash regression:
- Photo Mode or Freestyle filter freezes or crashes: NVIDIA listed this as a fixed gaming bug in driver 551.23, released January 24, 2024, for Windows 10 64-bit and Windows 11. The note applies to the filter-related symptom, not every crash.
- Light flickering on RTX 50 Series: NVIDIA listed this as a fixed issue in driver 581.42, dated September 30, 2025. Flickering is not the same symptom as a game crash.
Compare your exact symptom and GPU with the 551.23 release notes and the NVIDIA release archive. A matching note can make a driver issue more plausible; an unrelated note does not explain a different crash.

Use a clean boot to isolate software conflicts
If FH4 still crashes, a Windows clean boot can test whether a startup app or background service is interfering. Microsoft Q&A community guidance recommends starting with essential services and then re-enabling items in stages to find a conflict. Treat this as a diagnostic approach, not a guaranteed FH4 fix.
- Use Microsoft’s current instructions for performing a clean boot in your version of Windows.
- Try launching FH4 in the clean-boot environment.
- If it launches, re-enable services and startup items in stages, testing the game between stages, until the conflict returns.
- Restore normal startup settings when finished, unless you have identified a specific conflicting item to leave disabled.

If crashes continue, widen the diagnosis
If multiple games crash, or FH4 remains unstable after the driver and software checks, investigate overall system stability instead of assuming the game alone is responsible. Check temperatures, ventilation, power, chipset drivers, and hardware stability. NVIDIA’s troubleshooting guidance covers these possible contributors and recommends consulting its current support information.
An official Forza Community Forums thread from September 2018 directs players with launch failures or random PC crashes to Forza’s support article. That old forum post does not establish that a particular step is effective today.
