Forza Horizon 6 is an open-world Japan road trip built around two connected progressions. Horizon Festival gives you structured events, Qualifiers, an Invitational and seven Wristbands. Discover Japan rewards unscripted driving with seven Stamps earned through photography, stories, deliveries, collecting and hidden discoveries. The map has no officially published square-mile figure, but its design combines Tokyo City, rural roads, mountains, coast, industrial districts and layered elevation in the densest Horizon setting yet described by the developers.
How big is the Forza Horizon 6 map?
There is no official square-mile or square-kilometre measurement for the Forza Horizon 6 map in the published official descriptions. That means precise internet estimates should be treated as unofficial. The reliable description is about character and density: this is a Japan-inspired world with urban, rural, coastal and mountainous regions connected into one continuous driving space.

Official material presents Japan as the series’ densest and largest setting by comparative description. Tokyo City is identified as the largest urban area in a Forza Horizon game. Around it are smaller towns, countryside roads, industrial districts, coastlines and mountain routes. The world is also vertically layered, so distance is not only measured across the map: climbs, descents, tunnels, switchbacks, bridges and elevated city roads create more route choices than a flat area of the same footprint.

What the map includes
- Tokyo City: the game’s largest Horizon urban area, with dense streets and city-focused routes.
- Mountain roads: winding climbs, descents and Touge-style driving opportunities.
- Coast and countryside: scenic cruising, rural connectors and roads that link event hubs.
- Industrial districts: broad surfaces and built-up areas suited to different event types.
- Multiple biomes: visual and driving variety rather than one uniform landscape.
- Vertical routes: elevation changes that make exploration feel three-dimensional.
So, if “how big” means a published area statistic, the answer is not stated officially. If it means how much variety a road trip offers, the map is designed to feel unusually dense because urban, rural and vertical spaces are packed into the same connected world.

Is Forza Horizon 6 an open-world game?
Yes. You can leave an event, choose a destination, and drive across the connected Japan-inspired map instead of selecting every activity from a menu. Races and stunts are placed in the world, while exploration activities make free driving part of progression rather than a purely cosmetic diversion.
The open world supports two different mindsets. You can follow the Horizon Festival campaign in a deliberate order, or roam through Discover Japan and let discoveries determine what you do next. Both routes contribute to the Collection Journal, so switching between structured competition and free exploration is useful rather than a choice that locks you out of rewards.
How the two road-trip progressions work
Forza Horizon 6 separates its campaign into a structured Festival path and a freer Discover Japan path. They overlap through the Collection Journal, but they ask you to play in different ways.

| Horizon Festival | Qualifiers, the Horizon Invitational and seven Wristbands | Road, Dirt, Cross Country, Time Attack Circuits, Drag Meets, PR Stunts and Bonus Boards | Players who want clear goals, event unlocks and competitive progression |
| Discover Japan | Seven Stamps earned by finding and completing discoveries | Photography, Horizon Stories, deliveries, car collecting, Touge Battles, night Street Races, mascots, Barn Find rumours and other discoveries | Players who prefer wandering, collecting, stories and varied objectives |
Horizon Festival: the structured route
The Festival campaign begins with Qualifiers and leads into the Horizon Invitational. Completing the campaign’s milestones earns seven Wristbands. Each Wristband represents progress through the Festival’s curated activities, including conventional races, specialist events and map-based challenges.
This structure is useful when you want to know what to do next. Rather than treating the map as an unfiltered list of icons, the Wristband route gives your sessions a sequence: qualify, enter the Invitational, complete the relevant activities and work toward the next band. The exact event mix can vary by unlock, but the official categories are Road, Dirt, Cross Country, Time Attack Circuits, Drag Meets, PR Stunts and Bonus Boards.

Discover Japan: the exploration route
Discover Japan awards seven Stamps. Stamps come from activities that ask you to engage with the setting instead of simply winning a race. You may take photographs, complete Horizon Stories, deliver vehicles or objects, locate cars, challenge Touge routes, enter night Street Races, find mascots, investigate Barn Find rumours or uncover other roadside discoveries.
This path is intentionally less linear. A photo stop can lead to a story; a delivery can send you across a region; a Barn Find rumour can turn a casual drive into a search. Because Discover Japan feeds the Collection Journal, exploration has a concrete payoff even when you are not chasing a Wristband.

The Festival’s official activity categories cover conventional racing, specialist competition, stunts and collectible objectives. Each category rewards a different car choice and driving skill.
| Event type | What you do | Driving emphasis |
|---|---|---|
| Road | Race on paved circuits and connected streets | Braking, cornering, grip and clean lines |
| Dirt | Compete on unpaved routes | Surface management, slides and momentum |
| Cross Country | Race across rough terrain and open ground | Landings, suspension control and route reading |
| Time Attack Circuits | Set the fastest lap or run against the clock | Consistency, precision and repeatable lines |
| Drag Meets | Accelerate over short, straight courses | Launches, gearing and traction |
| PR Stunts | Complete speed, jump and similar performance challenges | Car setup, approach speed and risk management |
| Bonus Boards | Find and smash collectible boards placed around the world | Exploration, route planning and precise impacts |
These categories prevent the map from becoming a single race type repeated across different scenery. A road car that excels on asphalt may be a poor choice for Cross Country, while a vehicle tuned for dirt may not be ideal for a Time Attack lap. The event system therefore gives free driving a practical reason to maintain different cars.
What can you explore besides races?
Free-roaming activities are a central part of the road-trip design. They turn the map into a collection of places, people and vehicle stories rather than a series of start-and-finish gates.

Photography and Horizon Stories
Photography challenges ask you to find subjects, viewpoints or conditions and record them. Horizon Stories provide authored scenarios with their own objectives and narrative framing. Both are useful when you want a defined activity without entering a conventional championship.
Deliveries and car collecting
Deliveries send you through the world with a specific destination or vehicle-related task. Car collecting gives exploration a long-term purpose: finding and adding vehicles contributes to the Collection Journal instead of ending when you reach the next race.
Touge Battles and night Street Races
Touge Battles focus on mountain-road driving and the rhythm of tight climbs and descents. Night Street Races change the atmosphere and visibility, giving the same open world a different driving context. They are especially suited to players who want competitive driving outside the standard Festival categories.
Mascots, Barn Find rumours and roadside discoveries
Mascots and other discoveries reward attention to the environment. Barn Find rumours turn a vague lead into a search across the map; the appeal is locating the site, not merely selecting an event from a list. Houses and the Estate also form part of the world you are building a relationship with, while Aftermarket Cars place additional vehicles in the open world for you to discover.
Playground Games design representative Torben Ellert described the purpose of Aftermarket Cars as a subtle suggestion to try a car and take it to an event, with the cars placed in the world and made cheaper to purchase. That design encourages experimentation instead of leaving unfamiliar vehicles unused in a catalogue.

What rewards do exploration activities provide?
The Collection Journal is the main connective reward. It records progress across cars, discoveries and activities, allowing a photography session, a delivery and a newly found vehicle to matter alongside race results. Discover Japan’s seven Stamps provide a clearer milestone, while individual discoveries can add cars, stories, locations or other entries to your collection.
Exploration also changes how you encounter the map. Houses, the Estate, Barn Finds, mascots, Aftermarket Cars and roadside activities give you reasons to take secondary roads, stop in unfamiliar areas and revisit regions after new clues appear. The result is a road trip where navigation itself is part of the game loop.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Can you road-trip around Japan with friends?
Yes. The social systems support both cooperative cruising and direct competition. You can meet other players at Car Meets, use LINK skills to communicate and participate in shared activities rather than treating the open world as a solo-only campaign.
| Social feature | How it fits a road trip |
|---|---|
| Car Meets | Gather with other players to show vehicles and start a shared session. |
| LINK skills | Coordinate, signal interests and connect with nearby players during free driving. |
| Drag Meets | Stage short competitive acceleration runs with friends or other players. |
| Time Attack | Compare lap or route times while keeping the focus on precision. |
| Spec Racing | Compete under defined vehicle specifications for a more even contest. |
| The Eliminator | Enter a last-car-standing style competition within the open world. |
| Hide & Seek | Use the map for a pursuit game rather than a standard race. |
| CoLab | Share or experience community-created activities and routes. |
These options cover several session lengths. A group can meet for a short Drag Meet, spend longer comparing Time Attack runs, cruise between discoveries, or move into a larger competitive mode. The game therefore supports a road trip as social travel as well as a sequence of races.

The series is designed for both short and long sessions. Forza Horizon 5’s official description of “snackable” Horizon Adventure illustrates the broader format: you can complete a focused activity in a short sitting or spend a weekend working through events and exploration. In Forza Horizon 6, the Wristband and Stamp systems provide natural stopping points without requiring you to finish an entire campaign chapter at once.
What did “Horizon Road Trip” mean in Forza Horizon 5?
“Horizon Road Trip” was also the name of a time-limited Forza Horizon 5 Festival Playlist in September 2022. It was not the name of the entire open world. The playlist rotated through four weekly themes:
- Summer: Road Racing
- Autumn: Cross Country
- Winter: Street Racing
- Spring: Dirt Racing
Each week included themed championships and rewards. That historical FH5 label should not be confused with Forza Horizon 6’s ongoing road-trip structure, which combines the Horizon Festival progression with Discover Japan exploration.
Which progression should you follow first?
- Choose Horizon Festival first if you want a clear sequence, event unlocks and the fastest introduction to the game’s official race and stunt categories.
- Choose Discover Japan first if you prefer photography, stories, collecting, deliveries and finding your own route through the world.
- Alternate between them if you want car variety and a steady mix of competitive and noncompetitive objectives. Wristbands provide structure; Stamps and the Collection Journal reward detours.
Neither path eliminates the other. The most complete road trip uses both: follow Festival milestones when you want a defined goal, then leave the route to investigate a rumour, complete a story, photograph a location or challenge a mountain road.
