Common foxburner.dll errors
You may see one of these messages when an older program starts:
- “This application has failed to start because foxburner.dll was not found.”
- “The program can’t start because foxburner.dll is missing from your computer.”
- “Error loading foxburner.dll. The specified module could not be found.”
- “A required component is missing: foxburner.dll. Please install the application again.”
foxburner.dll is a legacy FoxBurner SDK library, and it is not a Windows system file. The safest repair is to identify the program that needs it and repair or reinstall that program from its original vendor-provided installer.

What is foxburner.dll?
foxburner.dll is associated with the FoxBurner SDK, legacy middleware used by software that worked with optical discs and other media functions. Historical file information identifies the internal description as “FoxBurner SDK” and the developer as FoxBurner Ltd.
It is a third-party application library. There is no evidence that it ships with Windows, Microsoft Visual C++, DirectX, .NET, or a Windows driver package.
The exact legacy filename is generally associated with older 32-bit software. Later FoxBurner SDK releases used separately named 32-bit and 64-bit libraries, including names from the FoxSDK32 and FoxSDK64 families. Therefore, installing an unrelated 64-bit library will not repair a 32-bit application that specifically requests foxburner.dll.
The file may have been installed by older burning, media, or graphics software. Known historical associations include some Total Commander burning components, Free DVD Maker, and Serif AlbumPlus-related software. These associations do not prove that every release or installation of those programs used the same DLL build.
Why does the error appear?
The most common causes are:
| Cause | What it means | Correct response |
|---|---|---|
| Incomplete installation or update | The application did not install all of its files | Repair or reinstall the parent application |
| Partial uninstall | A shared component was removed while another program still expects it | Reinstall the affected program |
| Antivirus quarantine | Security software removed or blocked the DLL | Check Protection history before restoring anything |
| Wrong architecture | A 32-bit application received an incompatible file | Install the application’s matching package |
| Missing dependency | foxburner.dll is present, but another library it needs is absent |
Reinstall the complete application and its documented runtimes |
| Corruption | The DLL or application files are damaged | Repair or reinstall the program |
| Obsolete software | The program no longer works reliably with current Windows | Use the original installer, compatibility settings, or a supported replacement |
The wording “specified module could not be found” is especially important. It does not always mean that the named DLL itself is absent. Windows may have found foxburner.dll but failed to load another library required by it.
Step 1: Identify the application that needs the file
Start with the program named in the error dialog. The missing DLL belongs with that program, not with Windows.
Check the error dialog and shortcut
Look for the application name in the message, window title, or launcher. If the dialog does not identify it:

- Right-click the program’s shortcut.
- Select Properties.
- On the Shortcut tab, read the Target field.
- Note the executable name and the folder containing it.
You can also inspect the application folder:
- Right-click the shortcut.
- Select Open file location.
- Look for
foxburner.dllbeside the program executable or inside an SDK-related subfolder.
Do not replace the file yet if you find it. First check its location and properties. A DLL in the affected application’s folder is more plausible than one in a Windows system directory.
Check recently changed software
Think about what changed immediately before the error appeared:
- An older burning or media application was updated.
- A program was uninstalled.
- Antivirus software reported a detection.
- A cleanup utility removed unused files.
- The application was moved to another drive.
- A backup or restore operation replaced part of the program.
If the failure began after removing software, reinstalling the program that still displays the error is usually more reliable than trying to reconstruct an individual DLL.
Step 2: Repair the parent application
Windows may offer a built-in repair option for the affected program.
- Press Windows + I to open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps.
- Find the program named in the error.
- Select the three-dot menu beside it.
- Choose Advanced options if available.
- Select Repair.
- Start the application again.
A successful repair should restore the missing file without removing your personal settings. If the program still displays the same error, return to the same page and use Reset only if you understand that it may remove application data or settings.
Some desktop programs do not provide Repair in Settings. In that case, use the program’s own installer:
- Find the original installer for the same application and version family.
- Right-click the installer.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Choose Repair, Modify, or Install, depending on what the installer offers.
- Restart Windows if the installer requests it.
- Test the application again.
Microsoft also provides guidance for repairing and removing programs through its program installation and removal troubleshooting guidance.
If repair does not work
Uninstall the affected application and reinstall it from the original vendor, disc, backup, or trusted installer that supplied the program.

- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Find the affected program.
- Select the three-dot menu.
- Choose Uninstall.
- Restart Windows.
- Run the original installer as administrator.
- Launch the program and test the operation that previously failed.
Reinstalling the complete application is the definitive fix when the DLL belongs to that application. It also restores dependent files that a standalone DLL download would not provide.
For software managed by a game or application launcher, open the launcher, select the affected title, and use its Verify, Repair, or Scan and repair function if available. The exact wording differs between launchers, but the purpose is the same: compare the installed files with the approved package and restore missing files.
Step 3: Check Windows Security Protection history
Antivirus software can quarantine a legitimate old DLL, particularly when the file comes from obsolete software or has limited reputation.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Check before downloading or restoring anything:
- Open Start.
- Type Windows Security.
- Open the application.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review detections around the time the error began.
- Expand any entry that refers to the affected application or
foxburner.dll.
If Windows Security removed the file, verify all of the following before restoring it:
- The file belongs to the application you intended to install.
- The file is located in that application’s directory.
- The application came from its original vendor or trusted installation media.
- The file’s publisher and digital signature are consistent with the application.
- The detection is not a current, confirmed threat.
Microsoft warns that restoring a genuine threat can expose the device. Do not create a broad antivirus exclusion just to make the error disappear. If the file is suspicious, remove the application and reinstall it from a trusted source instead. Microsoft explains these decisions in its guide to Protection history in Windows Security.
Step 4: Check the file’s location, signature, and architecture
If foxburner.dll is already present, inspect it rather than copying another version over it.
- Right-click the file.
- Select Properties.
- Open the General tab.
- Check the full location and whether Windows reports that the file is blocked.
- Open Digital Signatures, if the tab exists.
- Select a signature and choose Details.
- Review the signer and whether Windows reports that the signature is valid.
A file description that says FoxBurner SDK is useful, but metadata alone does not prove that a file is authentic. Version information can be forged. Consider the file’s origin, path, signature, and antivirus results together.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsThe legacy foxburner.dll is generally treated as a 32-bit or Win32 component. A 32-bit application needs its 32-bit dependencies even when Windows itself is 64-bit. Do not copy a file into both system architecture directories, and do not assume that a later FoxSDK64 library can replace this older filename.
The correct location is normally the parent program’s folder or an SDK subfolder installed with that program. It should not normally be placed in:
C:WindowsSystem32C:WindowsSysWOW64- A random folder added to the system
PATH
Step 5: Install only the runtime the application actually requires
Some older applications depend on a Microsoft runtime in addition to their own DLLs. If the application’s installer or vendor documentation identifies a required Visual C++ runtime, install the architecture and version it specifies from Microsoft’s supported Visual C++ Redistributable downloads.
Do not assume that installing a current runtime supplies foxburner.dll. The Visual C++ package does not prove that it contains this third-party FoxBurner file.
Recommended Free Tools
If you do not know which runtime is required, reinstall the parent application first. Its installer is more likely to select the correct dependencies than a generic runtime download.
Step 6: Run the program with appropriate permissions
Permissions can prevent an old application from reading its own files, although they do not normally explain a genuinely missing DLL.
To test administrator access:
- Open Start.
- Find the affected application.
- Right-click it.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Test the program.
If this works only as administrator, right-click the shortcut, select Properties, open Compatibility, and review the permission settings. Do not permanently run every application as administrator unless necessary. An old application that needs elevated access may need a correct reinstall, a writable data directory, or compatibility adjustments.

- Select Run compatibility troubleshooter.
- Follow the prompts.
- Test the recommended settings.
Compatibility mode is an experiment for obsolete software, not a replacement for a missing or damaged DLL.
Step 7: Check optical-drive and application drivers only when relevant
foxburner.dll is application middleware, not normally a device driver. Updating a graphics, chipset, or optical-drive driver will not recreate the file. Consider driver troubleshooting only if the application starts after repair but fails when it accesses a physical drive or media device.
To inspect a device:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand DVD/CD-ROM drives and Storage controllers.
- Right-click the relevant device.
- Select Properties.
- Read the Device status message on the General tab.
- Open the Driver tab.
- Select Update Driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows if a driver is installed.
If the device has an error symbol, uninstalling the device from Device Manager and restarting can allow Windows to detect it again. Do not remove storage-controller drivers casually, especially on a system drive.
Manually hunting through driver versions can be time-consuming, particularly when several devices show outdated packages. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for outdated drivers; its free scan shows what it finds, while driver installation is handled by the full version. Reinstalling the parent application remains the definitive fix when the error is specifically about foxburner.dll.

Step 8: Repair Windows components only when Windows itself is damaged
System repair commands do not normally recreate a third-party FoxBurner DLL. Use them when you also see broader Windows problems, such as damaged built-in applications, update failures, or protected system files that will not load.
First run Deployment Image Servicing and Management:
- Open Start.
- Type Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Select Yes at the User Account Control prompt.
- Enter this command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for it to finish.
- Restart Windows.
After the restart, open an elevated Command Prompt again and run:
sfc /scannow
Wait until the scan reaches 100 percent, then restart Windows and test the application.
Microsoft documents DISM repair and System File Checker as tools for Windows image and protected system-file problems. They should not be described as a direct FoxBurner replacement.
Repeatedly running SFC and DISM will not fix an application that simply lacks its own DLL. If both commands complete successfully but the error remains, return to repairing or reinstalling the parent program.
When manually diagnosing several Windows components, it is easy to repeat scans without knowing what changed. Outbyte PC Repair can provide a scan showing reported issues, while repair is handled by the full version; it is optional, and reinstalling the application remains the definitive fix for this file.
Step 9: Use System Restore if the timing is clear
System Restore can help when the error began immediately after an application installation, update, driver change, or system modification.
- Press Windows + R.
- Type
rstrui.exe. - Press Enter.
- Select Next.
- Choose a restore point dated before the problem began.
- Select Scan for affected programs if available.
- Review the applications and drivers that will be changed.
- Select Close, then Next.
- Select Finish to begin the restore.
System Restore rolls back applications, drivers, registry settings, and system files. It is not a substitute for a current backup. Microsoft provides further details about System Restore.
Why downloading foxburner.dll separately is unsafe
A standalone DLL download can fail in several ways:
- The file may contain malware.
- It may be the wrong build for the application.
- It may be the wrong architecture.
- It may have been modified or forged.
- It may require other missing dependencies.
- It may leave the original broken installation untouched.
No current official standalone foxburner.dll download was verified. Do not treat an archive listing as an official FoxBurner redistributable.
The safe source is the original application installer, recovery media, or a current installer supplied by the application’s publisher. If the software is obsolete, contact its publisher for the last supported installer or replace it with supported software. Avoid DLL download websites and never copy an unverified file into Windows system directories.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Why regsvr32 usually does not help
regsvr32 is for registering DLLs that expose a COM registration entry point such as DllRegisterServer. It is not a general-purpose missing-DLL repair command.
A normal SDK or runtime library is usually loaded directly by the application. Running a command such as:
regsvr32 foxburner.dll
may produce an error that DllRegisterServer was not found. That does not mean Windows needs a different copy of the file. It means the DLL is not designed for that registration process.
Use regsvr32 only when the application’s official documentation specifically identifies the file as a COM or ActiveX component and provides registration instructions.

What about Windows Features?
Turning Windows features on or off does not normally install foxburner.dll.
To review available features:
- Press Windows + R.
- Enter
optionalfeatures. - Press Enter.
- Review the list.
- Select Cancel unless the affected application’s documentation explicitly requires a particular feature.
Do not enable random legacy components in an attempt to replace the FoxBurner SDK. If an older application requires a specific Windows feature, follow its documented requirement and restart afterward.
If the error returns after every reinstall
A reinstall that restores the file temporarily but loses it again points to a secondary problem. Check these possibilities:
- Windows Security or another antivirus product is quarantining the file.
- The program lacks permission to read its installation directory.
- The application is being launched from an old shortcut pointing to another copy.
- The installed build does not match the application’s architecture.
- Another dependency is missing.
- The user profile or application configuration is damaged.
- The software is no longer compatible with current Windows.
Record the exact file path before and after reinstalling. If the file disappears, immediately check Protection history and other antivirus logs. If the file remains but the error continues, note the full error text because it may identify a missing dependency rather than foxburner.dll itself.
Frequently asked questions
Is foxburner.dll a Windows file?
No. It is a third-party FoxBurner SDK library associated with legacy application software. It should not normally be copied into Windows system directories.
Is foxburner.dll a 32-bit or 64-bit file?
Public metadata for the exact legacy filename generally points to Win32 or x86 software. Later FoxBurner SDK releases used separately named 32-bit and 64-bit libraries. Install the architecture supplied with the affected application rather than mixing files.
Where should foxburner.dll be located?
Usually in the parent application’s installation folder or one of that application’s SDK subfolders. The exact location depends on the program that installed it.
Can I download foxburner.dll from a DLL website?
Avoid it. The file may be malicious, mismatched, or incomplete. Restore it through the original application installer instead.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsShould I copy the file into System32?
No. Copying it into System32 or SysWOW64 can create version conflicts and does not repair the application’s installation.
Does regsvr32 fix the error?
Usually no. A normal FoxBurner SDK library is loaded by its application and does not normally require COM registration.
Will SFC or DISM restore the file?
Normally no. They repair Windows components and protected system files, not third-party FoxBurner libraries.
What if the original program is obsolete?
Find the original installer or contact the application’s publisher for its last supported package. If neither is available, migrate to supported software rather than relying on an unverified DLL download.
What information should I provide when asking for further help?
Include the exact error text, affected application name, Windows version, full path of any existing foxburner.dll, file properties and signature information, and any antivirus action recorded in Protection history. Do not upload or share a DLL unless its origin has been verified.
