fp5awel.dll is the Microsoft FrontPage Web Extender Library, a legacy component associated with FrontPage Server Extensions 2002 and SharePoint Team Services 2002. If fp5awel.dll is missing, the safest fix is to repair or reinstall the old Microsoft product that originally installed it, not to download the DLL into a Windows system folder.

What fp5awel.dll belongs to

fp5awel.dll is not a normal Windows system file. It belongs to Microsoft’s older web-authoring and web-server technology, including:

  • FrontPage 2002
  • FrontPage Server Extensions 2002
  • SharePoint Team Services 2002
  • Microsoft Office XP installations containing the relevant web components

Microsoft identifies the presence of this file as evidence that either FrontPage Server Extensions 2002 or SharePoint Team Services is installed. The installed-programs list may show Microsoft SharePoint when SharePoint Team Services is the owning component. Microsoft documents this relationship in its MS03-051 security bulletin.

The file is commonly identified as a 32-bit Win32 legacy component. That does not mean every historical deployment used an identical file or that a 32-bit copy should be placed into System32. Microsoft documented separate historical x86 and x64 FPSE packages for some older operating systems, so the correct architecture depends on the original product and installation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A commonly documented installation area for FrontPage Server Extensions is:

%ProgramFiles%Common FilesMicrosoft SharedWeb Server Extensions50bin

The exact location can differ according to the product, language, installation method, and Windows architecture.

Error messages you may see

The wording depends on which executable is trying to load the component. Common reported variants include:

  • “This application failed to start because FP5AWEL.dll was not found.”
  • “The program can’t start because FP5AWEL.dll is missing from your computer.”
  • “The file FP5AWEL.dll is missing or corrupted.”
  • “A required component is missing: FP5AWEL.dll.”
  • “Error loading FP5AWEL.dll. The specified module could not be found.”
  • “FP5AWEL.dll file could not be loaded.”
  • “FP5AWEL.dll cannot be located.”

These are reported message variants rather than an official exhaustive list. The name of the failing executable is especially useful. It may identify FrontPage, a SharePoint administration tool, an IIS-related utility, or an installer.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If the message says “The specified module could not be found,” the DLL itself may exist while one of its dependencies is missing. Do not assume that copying another copy of fp5awel.dll will solve that form of the error.

Before repairing anything, identify the owner

Check the error dialog

Write down the application named in the title bar or message. If the error appears while opening FrontPage or managing an old SharePoint site, repair that legacy product first.

If the error appears during startup, check whether the old program is still needed. A startup entry left behind after an incomplete uninstall can call a DLL that the main application no longer has.

Check installed programs

On Windows 10 or Windows 11:

  1. Press Windows + R.
  2. Type appwiz.cpl.
  3. Press Enter.
  4. Look for entries containing:
  5. Microsoft Office
  6. Microsoft FrontPage
  7. Microsoft SharePoint
  8. FrontPage Server Extensions
  9. Note which entries are present before changing anything.

You can also open Settings → Apps → Installed apps, but older MSI-based Office and server components are often easier to manage through Programs and Features.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

On Windows XP, open Control Panel → Add or Remove Programs.

If Microsoft SharePoint appears in the list, do not treat it as unrelated Office software. SharePoint Team Services 2002 is one of the known owners of this component.

Fix 1: Repair the owning Microsoft installation

Time needed: 10–30 minutes, plus any time required to locate installation media

This is the most likely solution when the error began after an interrupted uninstall, disk cleanup, failed update, or accidental removal of an Office or web component.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Press Windows + R.
  2. Enter appwiz.cpl.
  3. Press Enter.
  4. Select the relevant Office, FrontPage, SharePoint, or FrontPage Server Extensions entry.
  5. Select Change.
  6. Choose Repair if that option is offered.
  7. Follow the wizard.
  8. Restart Windows.
  9. Open the application that originally produced the error.

Office XP may request the original CD, an administrative installation source, or a preserved network installation point. Modern Microsoft 365 repair controls do not repair Office XP components.

For supported modern Office versions, Microsoft’s repair flow is generally Settings → Apps → Installed apps → Microsoft Office → Modify, followed by Repair or Online Repair, depending on the installation type. Microsoft describes those options in its Office application repair instructions. Those controls do not guarantee that they can restore an Office XP-era component.

If repair does not restore the file

Run the original setup program again and choose a custom installation if available. Look for features referring to:

  • Web tools
  • FrontPage
  • Web server extensions
  • SharePoint Team Services
  • Shared Office components

Do not remove the whole Office installation first if you still have an opportunity to select Change or Repair. Removing it can make it harder to identify which original features were installed.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

After reinstalling, restart Windows and test the original program rather than launching the DLL directly. A DLL is not normally opened by double-clicking.

Fix 2: Reinstall FrontPage Server Extensions or SharePoint Team Services

Time needed: 20–60 minutes

Use this fix when the installed-programs list identifies FrontPage Server Extensions or Microsoft SharePoint, or when the error comes from an old IIS or SharePoint administration task.

Microsoft’s historical documentation places FPSE tools under the shared web-server extensions directory and explains that older packages were tied to particular operating systems. The Microsoft FPSE installation documentation also notes that FPSE 2002 was removed from the Download Center after Office XP left mainstream support.

That means there is no current, general-purpose Microsoft download intended to provide only fp5awel.dll. Use, in this order:

  1. The original Microsoft installation CD or DVD.
  2. A verified administrative installation source preserved by your organization.
  3. A Microsoft-maintained package specifically matching the legacy product and operating system.
  4. A system image or backup known to contain the complete installation.

Do not install an update merely because its file list contains a similarly named DLL. Microsoft’s MS03-051 bulletin includes separate historical update paths for FrontPage Server Extensions 2002 and SharePoint Team Services 2002. SharePoint Team Services also had an Office XP service-pack prerequisite. Mixing packages from different Office generations can leave the installation in a worse state.

After setup finishes:

  1. Restart the computer.
  2. Open Programs and Features again.
  3. Confirm that the parent product is still listed.
  4. Reopen the application or administration tool that produced the error.
  5. Check whether the same executable now starts without the message.

If the old component is being installed on a current version of Windows, compatibility is not guaranteed. Historical FPSE packages supported particular older Windows releases and are not equivalent to a supported Windows 10 or Windows 11 feature.

Fix 3: Check antivirus quarantine before restoring anything

Time needed: 5–15 minutes

An antivirus product may have quarantined or deleted a file that was part of an old installation. This is a possibility, not proof that fp5awel.dll commonly triggers a false detection.

  1. Open Windows Security.
  2. Select Virus & threat protection.
  3. Choose Protection history.
  4. Look for an event naming FP5AWEL.DLL or the parent application.
  5. Record the path, detection name, and action taken.
  6. Do not restore the file immediately if it was located in a temporary folder, a user-writable directory, or an unexpected application folder.

Restore a quarantined file only when all of the following are true:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • The path matches the original Microsoft installation.
  • The file belongs to the known FrontPage, Office, or SharePoint installation.
  • The security product’s record shows a credible false positive.
  • You will immediately repair or reinstall the parent product afterward.

If the file is unsigned, modified, or in an unexpected directory, leave it quarantined. Run a full Windows Security scan and reinstall the parent product from trusted media instead.

Fix 4: Repair Windows components, but understand the limits

Time needed: 15–45 minutes

fp5awel.dll is not normally a protected Windows system file. Therefore, System File Checker will not usually restore it. DISM and SFC are still useful when the failure began with broader Windows corruption or when installers themselves are malfunctioning.

  1. Right-click Start.
  2. Select Terminal (Admin) or Command Prompt (Admin).
  3. Approve the User Account Control prompt.
  4. Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
  1. Wait for it to finish.
  2. Then run:
sfc /scannow
  1. Restart Windows.
  2. Retry the Office, FrontPage, or SharePoint repair.

Microsoft documents DISM in its guide to repairing a Windows image and documents SFC in System File Checker.

If DISM reports that the source files cannot be found, Windows may need access to suitable installation media or a repair source. That is a Windows servicing issue, not evidence that a random DLL download is appropriate.

Repeatedly running SFC will not recreate a removed FrontPage installation. If both commands complete successfully but the error remains, return to repairing or reinstalling the parent product.

When manually running DISM and SFC becomes difficult, Outbyte PC Repair can scan for issues and show what needs attention; its free scan identifies problems, while repair features require the full version. It is optional, and reinstalling the specific FrontPage, SharePoint, or Office component remains the definitive fix for this file.

Fix 5: Check Windows Features and IIS only when the program needs them

Time needed: 10–30 minutes

This step applies mainly to an old server or development computer that used IIS and FrontPage publishing. It is not a general way to install fp5awel.dll.

  1. Press Windows + R.
  2. Type:
optionalfeatures
  1. Press Enter.
  2. Review Internet Information Services and related legacy components.
  3. Do not enable random IIS features simply because the error mentions a web component.
  4. Apply only the features required by the original application.
  5. Restart Windows if prompted.
  6. Run the original installer again if it requires IIS integration.

On older Windows versions, IIS and FrontPage Server Extensions could be managed through Control Panel → Add or Remove Programs → Add/Remove Windows Components. The exact feature names depend on the Windows release.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If this is an Internet-facing server and the old site no longer requires FrontPage publishing, restoring FPSE may be the wrong objective. Microsoft documented security vulnerabilities in these legacy extensions. Remove or disable the obsolete component instead, after confirming that no required site or publishing workflow depends on it. Microsoft’s MS03-051 mitigation guidance explains that dependent FrontPage functionality will stop working when the extensions are removed.

Fix 6: Do not treat this as a driver problem

Time needed: 5–15 minutes for verification

fp5awel.dll is an application and web-extension library, not a hardware driver. Device Manager will not normally repair it.

Still, check drivers only if the DLL message appeared as part of a wider system failure involving a device, docking station, graphics adapter, storage controller, or installer:

  1. Right-click Start.
  2. Select Device Manager.
  3. Expand the relevant device category.
  4. Look for a yellow warning icon.
  5. Right-click the affected device and choose Update driver.
  6. Select Search automatically for drivers.
  7. Restart Windows if a driver is installed.
  8. Test the original application again.

Do not use Device Manager to search for fp5awel.dll. If the problem is limited to FrontPage, Office XP, SharePoint, or IIS tooling, repair that software instead.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If several hardware drivers are outdated and manually identifying the correct versions is taking longer than expected, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan and identify driver issues; its free scan shows what is found, while driver installation features require the full version. This is optional and is not a substitute for reinstalling the Microsoft component that owns fp5awel.dll.

Fix 7: Use System Restore only when the timing is clear

Time needed: 20–60 minutes

System Restore can help if a restore point predates the deletion or failed installation and captured the relevant application. It will not recreate a product that was never included in the restore point.

  1. Press Windows + R.
  2. Type:
rstrui.exe
  1. Press Enter.
  2. Select Choose a different restore point if offered.
  3. Pick a point from before the error began.
  4. Review affected programs.
  5. Start the restore.
  6. After Windows restarts, test the original application.

Do not use System Restore as the first choice when you have reliable installation media. Repairing the parent product is more targeted and makes the cause easier to verify.

Why random DLL downloads are unsafe

Do not download fp5awel.dll from a random DLL archive and copy it into:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
C:WindowsSystem32

or:

C:WindowsSysWOW64

That approach can fail for several reasons:

  • The file may be malicious or modified.
  • The version may not match the application.
  • The architecture may be wrong.
  • Required dependent files may still be missing.
  • The application may require the DLL in its original shared-components directory.
  • A system-folder copy can create version conflicts.
  • It does not repair the damaged Office, FrontPage, SharePoint, or IIS installation.

The safe sources are original Microsoft installation media, a trusted organizational installation source, a matching Microsoft package, or a known-good system backup. Microsoft’s historical security bulletin is useful for identifying the correct product and update path, but it is not a reason to install an unrelated historical patch.

What caused the error

The most likely causes are:

Likely cause Appropriate response
FrontPage, Office, or SharePoint was partially removed Repair or reinstall the parent product
FPSE or SharePoint Team Services was never installed Install the complete component from trusted media
Antivirus quarantined the file Verify the path and restore only when safe, then repair
An old update or service-pack mismatch occurred Use the matching product update and prerequisites
Windows or disk corruption affected setup Run DISM and SFC, then repair the application
The component is obsolete and no longer needed Remove or disable it, especially on an Internet-facing server
A modern unrelated application names the file Treat the message as suspicious and investigate the executable and path

The problem can also follow an Office uninstall, removal of IIS, failed update, disk cleanup, restoration of an old system image, or an incomplete application migration.

Frequently asked questions

Is fp5awel.dll part of Windows?

No. It is a legacy Microsoft application component associated with FrontPage Server Extensions 2002 and SharePoint Team Services 2002. Windows XP did not install FrontPage Server Extensions by default.

Is it part of Office XP?

It can be. FrontPage Server Extensions 2002 belonged to the Office XP product family, and SharePoint Team Services 2002 shipped with Office XP. The more precise identification is FPSE or SharePoint Team Services rather than a generic Windows DLL.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Should I register it with regsvr32?

Usually not. regsvr32 is intended for self-registering COM or ActiveX libraries that provide a DllRegisterServer entry point. There is no established reason to assume that FP5AWEL.dll is self-registering.

Running this command:

regsvr32 FP5AWEL.dll

may produce an error stating that the module was loaded but the entry point was not found. Use the product installer unless Microsoft’s installation instructions explicitly require registration.

Is fp5awel.dll always 32-bit?

No. Common file inventories identify the file as a 32-bit Win32 legacy component, but Microsoft also documented historical x64 FPSE packages for certain older systems. Match the original application and package rather than guessing based only on the Windows edition.

Can I copy the file from another computer?

That is not a safe general repair. The other computer may have a different build, architecture, language, installation path, or dependency set. Reinstall the owning product from trusted media instead.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Will Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET install it?

No modern Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET redistributable is known to supply this FrontPage Web Extender Library. Installing unrelated runtimes is unlikely to correct the problem.

What if the error appears in a game?

fp5awel.dll is not a normal game runtime. Check the executable path and startup entry. A game or unrelated application requesting it may have been packaged incorrectly, may have an obsolete dependency, or may be showing a fabricated error. Scan the system and avoid downloading the DLL from an archive.

Should I restore FPSE on a web server?

Only if the server still requires it and you understand the security implications. If the server is Internet-facing and FrontPage publishing is no longer needed, removing or disabling the obsolete extension is often safer than restoring it.

What if the error remains after reinstalling?

Check the full path in the error or Event Viewer. Confirm that the failing executable belongs to the repaired product, inspect antivirus quarantine, and look for a missing dependency. If the application is being launched by a stale startup entry, uninstall or disable that obsolete entry rather than rebuilding a component you no longer use.
