You may also see “The file maptable.dll is missing or corrupted,” “Error loading maptable.dll,” “Cannot find maptable.dll,” or “A required component is missing: maptable.dll.”
The 60-second answer
maptable.dll is not a normal Windows file, Visual C++ runtime, DirectX component, or .NET library. It is an obscure third-party DLL most strongly associated with old BenQ/MiraScan scanner software and related OEM scanner packages.
The safest fix is to identify the scanner program showing the error, uninstall that damaged installation, then reinstall the complete driver and scanning utility from the scanner manufacturer’s official support archive. Do not download an isolated copy of maptable.dll or put it in System32.

Historical scanner packages place the file in application-specific locations such as a SYSTEM or Program folder. Different packages used different builds, so a file with the same name is not automatically compatible with your scanner software.
What causes the maptable.dll error
The likely causes are:
- The MiraScan or scanner utility installation is incomplete or damaged.
- The scanner software was moved, deleted, or cleaned by disk software.
- Antivirus software quarantined the DLL.
- The wrong scanner driver package was installed.
- Old 32-bit scanner software is being run on modern 64-bit Windows.
- A required dependency beside
maptable.dllis missing. - The file is an impostor or malware-related copy.
- Windows has broader component corruption, although this is less likely.
The program named in the error matters. If the message appears when opening an old scanner utility, that application is the repair target. If it appears during Windows startup and you no longer use the scanner, removing the obsolete software is usually better than restoring the DLL.
Fix 1: Reinstall the complete scanner package
This is the most reliable repair for a missing or damaged maptable.dll.
1. Identify the parent application
Before uninstalling anything, note:
- The full error message
- The name of the program that fails
- The scanner model
- Any file path shown in the message
- Whether the error appears at startup or only when scanning
Open Settings with Windows + I, then select Apps > Installed apps. Search for entries containing terms such as:

- BenQ scanner software
- Scan utility
- TWAIN driver
- The scanner’s model name
If the error identifies a file path, check whether it points to the scanner program’s folder. Do not assume that a copy in C:WindowsSystem32 is the correct one.
2. Remove the damaged installation
In Settings > Apps > Installed apps:
- Find the scanner application.
- Select the three-dot menu beside it.
- Choose Uninstall.
- Follow the removal wizard.
- Restart Windows.
If the program does not appear in Settings, open Control Panel by searching from the Start menu. Select Programs > Programs and Features, select the scanner software, and choose Uninstall.
Do not manually delete random DLLs from Windows folders. Remove the parent scanner program through its installer whenever possible.
3. Download the correct package
Use the scanner manufacturer’s official support page or the original installation media. Search by the exact scanner model, not merely by the word “MiraScan.”
For older BenQ hardware, the current support site may not provide a package for every legacy model. If the manufacturer lists an archived Windows driver, verify that it matches the scanner model and your Windows version. Do not combine a DLL from one scanner package with the executable from another.

4. Install the complete package
After downloading the official installer:
- Right-click the installer.
- Select Properties and check the Digital Signatures tab if it is available.
- Close the Properties window.
- Right-click the installer again.
- Choose Run as administrator.
- Complete the installation.
- Restart Windows.
Test the scanner in its original utility. Then test it from another compatible scanning application if one is installed. If both applications can access the scanner, the repair worked.
If the installer refuses to run because the operating system is unsupported, right-click it, select Properties > Compatibility, enable compatibility mode for an older Windows version, and run the installer again. Compatibility mode may help the application install, but it cannot guarantee that an old scanner driver will work on Windows 11 or Windows 10.
Fix 2: Check Windows Security quarantine
Antivirus software may have removed the file, but a quarantine event does not prove that the DLL was safe.

Inspect the relevant detection and check:
- The original file path
- The detection name
- The publisher or signer
- Whether the file was inside the scanner’s installation directory
- Whether the scanner software was installed from trusted media
Do not restore the file automatically. A suspicious copy in a temporary folder, user profile, startup directory, or unrelated application folder may be an impostor.
If the file came from a verified scanner installation and the detection is clearly a false positive, you can use the Protection History action to restore or allow it. Microsoft notes that Defender may detect a restored file again unless it is deliberately allowed. Scan the installer before reinstalling it, and prefer a fresh installation from the manufacturer over restoring a questionable standalone DLL.
If you cannot establish where the file came from, leave it quarantined and reinstall the complete scanner package instead.

A wrong or incomplete driver package can leave the scanner utility without the files it expects.
Open Device Manager by right-clicking the Start button and selecting Device Manager. Expand:

- Any category containing an unknown device
Look for the scanner model or a device with a warning icon.
Right-click the scanner and select Properties. On the General tab, read the device status. On the Driver tab, note the provider, date, and version. Do not use a driver intended for a different scanner model merely because the names look similar.
To remove a visibly broken device:
- Right-click the scanner in Device Manager.
- Select Uninstall device.
- Enable the option to remove the driver package if Windows offers it and you are certain it belongs to the old scanner.
- Select Uninstall.
- Restart Windows.
- Install the complete manufacturer package.
- Reconnect the scanner when the installer requests it.
If the scanner works in Windows Scan but not in the old MiraScan utility, the hardware may be fine. The remaining problem is likely the obsolete application or its compatibility with the current Windows release.
Driver packages can involve several components, so manually replacing one DLL does not repair the driver chain. Fix 4: Check 32-bit and 64-bit compatibility
At least one public catalog identifies a MapTable.dll copy as a Win32 DLL, and historical scanner packages show different file sizes and layouts. That means you should not assume that every copy works on every Windows installation.
A 32-bit scanner program can run on 64-bit Windows, but it still needs the correct 32-bit application files and compatible scanner driver. Do not copy a DLL into both:
C:WindowsSystem32C:WindowsSysWOW64
Despite their names, these folders serve different Windows architectures, and placing an application DLL there can create conflicts for unrelated software.
Check your Windows architecture by opening Settings > System > About and reading System type. Then compare it with the scanner package’s compatibility information. The important match is between the scanner application, its driver, and the DLL build, not simply between the DLL and Windows.
If the error changes to “The procedure entry point could not be located” or “This application was unable to start,” the DLL may be the wrong build. Reinstall the complete package instead of trying another isolated copy.
Fix 5: Repair Windows components only when other files are failing
maptable.dll is not known to be a protected Windows system file. Therefore, System File Checker normally will not restore it. DISM and SFC are appropriate when Windows itself is showing multiple repair symptoms, not as the primary solution for an old scanner DLL.

Open Terminal, PowerShell, or Command Prompt as administrator:
- Search for Command Prompt.
- Right-click it.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Select Yes at the User Account Control prompt.
- Run:
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
Wait for it to finish. Then run:
sfc /scannow
Microsoft documents that DISM repairs the Windows component source and SFC checks protected Windows files. Restart after both commands complete and test the scanner again.
The result may say that no integrity violations were found. That is normal if only the third-party scanner installation is damaged.

Fix 6: Use System Restore after a recent driver change
If the scanner worked recently and stopped after a driver or software installation, System Restore may reverse that change.
Press Windows + R, type:
rstrui.exe
Press Enter.
Then:
- Select Next.
- Choose a restore point created before the scanner stopped working.
- Select Scan for affected programs if available.
- Review the changes.
- Select Next, then Finish.
- Allow Windows to restart.
System Restore does not normally affect personal documents, but it can remove recently installed drivers and applications. Use it as a fallback, not as a substitute for the correct scanner package.
Why you should not use regsvr32 for this file
regsvr32 is for DLLs that expose a registration entry point such as DllRegisterServer. There is no verified evidence that maptable.dll is an ActiveX control or that this scanner component requires registration.
Running a command such as this is therefore not a standard repair:

regsvr32 maptable.dll
It may produce another error, especially if the DLL is 32-bit, is not in the current directory, or has no registration entry point. Use regsvr32 only if the scanner manufacturer specifically instructs you to register this file and provides the correct path and architecture.
Why standalone DLL downloads are a bad fix
Random DLL download sites can provide:
- The wrong package version
- The wrong architecture
- A file missing required dependencies
- A modified or malicious binary
- A copy that does not match the scanner application
Historical records show multiple MapTable.dll builds with conflicting sizes and installation paths. That is evidence of package-specific variants, not a universal file that can be safely exchanged between computers.

Manual copying is appropriate only when extracting the file from the exact, trusted scanner installer and returning it to the same application directory. It should not be copied to System32, SysWOW64, or an unrelated program folder.
If you no longer use the scanner
If the error appears during Windows startup and the old scanner is no longer connected:
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Uninstall MiraScan or the scanner utility.
- Restart Windows.
- Check Task Manager > Startup apps for a remaining scanner entry.
- Disable only the obsolete scanner startup item.
- If the error continues, check the program’s own uninstall documentation rather than deleting random startup files.
If the scanner is no longer supported and cannot work with your Windows version, use Windows’ compatible scanning support where available or replace the device. Restoring an old DLL may make the startup message disappear while leaving the unusable driver installed.
FAQ
Is maptable.dll part of Windows?
No verified evidence identifies it as a Windows component. It is most strongly associated with old BenQ/MiraScan scanner software and related OEM packages.
Is maptable.dll a Microsoft runtime?

Normally, no. The file belongs in the scanner application’s own directory or its driver package location.
Should I register it?
Not unless the scanner vendor explicitly requires it. There is no verified reason to treat maptable.dll as a self-registering Windows component.
What if the message says “The specified module could not be found”?
That message can mean that a dependency required by maptable.dll is missing, not necessarily that the named DLL itself is absent. Reinstall the complete scanner package so its dependent files are restored together.
Can SFC repair maptable.dll?
Usually not. SFC repairs protected Windows files, while maptable.dll is a third-party scanner component. Use SFC and DISM when Windows has broader corruption, but reinstall the scanner software for this specific file.
