Framework says its Laptop 16 is the first gaming laptop designed for generational GPU upgrades: its RTX 5070 is a removable Graphics Module that fits the rear Expansion Bay, including on the original Laptop 16. That makes the upgrade path unusual, but the “first” label is Framework’s claim, not an independently established industry-wide finding. Whether the upgrade is worthwhile depends on the module’s price, your current configuration, and how much performance you need.
What “upgradeable GPU” means on the Framework 16
The GPU is not a card inside a standard desktop-style slot. It is part of a removable Graphics Module that occupies the Laptop 16’s rear Expansion Bay, which connects over PCIe x8. Framework designed this bay for graphics modules and other high-power, high-speed uses. The company says the new RTX 5070 module is backward-compatible with the original Laptop 16 introduced in 2023, so owners of that generation can replace their existing graphics module rather than buy a new laptop just to get the newer GPU.
Framework’s August 26, 2025 announcement described this as generational graphics upgradeability. That supports calling the Laptop 16 a gaming laptop with a planned, replaceable GPU upgrade path. It does not establish that no earlier laptop from any manufacturer ever had an upgradeable graphics design, so “first” is best read as Framework’s product claim rather than a settled historical fact.
Can an existing owner upgrade to the RTX 5070?
According to Framework, yes: the new module is backward-compatible with the original Laptop 16. The upgrade is a replacement of the rear Graphics Module, not a GPU swap within the old module. Check Framework’s current compatibility, stock, and regional ordering information before buying; the product information supplied here does not establish installation time, tools, or whether every regional configuration is available.

The $699 and $1,199 figures are module prices, not complete-laptop prices. Framework announced the updated Laptop 16 with a $1,499 starting configuration on August 26, 2025; it also announced that the original-generation model would start at $1,299. Those are announced starting prices, not the cost of adding the GPU module to an existing system, and current configurations and pricing can differ.
How much faster is it?
Framework claims the RTX 5070 Graphics Module delivers 30–40% higher gaming framerates than the original Radeon RX 7700S module. That is the manufacturer’s comparison, not an independent benchmark. The stated figure does not, by itself, tell you how a particular game will perform, what settings or resolution were used, or how the module compares with other gaming laptops. The 100W AC limit is also relevant when comparing it with RTX 5070 laptops configured to different power limits. No independent test results or battery-life measurements are established here.

What else matters about the Laptop 16?
The GPU is one part of a larger, repairable and configurable system. These are Framework’s stated specifications for the Laptop 16:
- Display: 16-inch, 2560 × 1600, 165Hz matte anti-glare panel. G-SYNC requires both the RTX 5070 module and the second-generation Display Kit.
- Memory: two DDR5-5600 SO-DIMM sockets, supporting up to 96GB.
- Storage: one M.2 2280 slot supporting up to 8TB and one M.2 2230 slot supporting up to 2TB.
- Customization: six user-selectable Expansion Cards, alongside the rear PCIe x8 Expansion Bay.
- Size and weight: 20.95mm high, 356.58mm wide, and 290.20mm deep; 2.40kg with the Graphics Module.
- Software options: Windows 11 configurations are offered, and DIY systems can be assembled with a user-supplied operating system, including Linux.
Is the RTX 5070 upgrade worth it?
For an existing Laptop 16 owner, the main benefit is being able to keep the rest of the system and replace its graphics module. That can be appealing if the current GPU is the main limitation and you value repairability or modular upgrades. But the available facts do not establish that buying a module costs less than replacing a laptop over time; that depends on the price you paid, the rest of your configuration, the module’s current price, and the alternative systems available when you upgrade.

The 8GB module is the lower-priced option shown by Framework, while the 12GB version costs more. The product information does not establish which is the better value for a specific game or workload, so choose based on the memory needs of the software you actually use rather than assuming the larger option guarantees a particular frame-rate gain.
For someone shopping for a new gaming laptop, weigh the upgrade path against the entire package. Framework announced a $1,499 starting configuration in 2025, while the Graphics Module is priced separately. The Laptop 16’s 2.40kg weight with the module and its 100W AC graphics ceiling are also concrete trade-offs to consider alongside its replaceable GPU, memory and storage access, and user-selectable Expansion Cards. Without independent, like-for-like gaming tests or a current total build price, there is no evidence here to declare it faster or cheaper than a conventional gaming laptop.
