“Unable to start download” means Ubisoft Connect failed to initialize a game download or update; it does not necessarily mean your internet connection is down. Uplay is the former name of Ubisoft Connect, the current PC launcher. The quickest way to narrow the cause is to check whether Ubisoft’s services are available, see whether one game or every game fails, then test the launcher cache and the destination folder before attempting a reinstall.
Try the steps below in order, and keep existing game folders intact unless you have confirmed they are not needed. Ubisoft says some content requires an internet connection, a Ubisoft account, and Ubisoft Connect; see its terms of use.
First, identify what is failing
Before changing settings, note whether the message appears while installing a new game, updating one, verifying files, or launching a game through Steam or Epic Games Store. Also note any full error text or number. This is a general launcher error: it can occur when Ubisoft Connect cannot reach a service, validate an entitlement, write to a library folder, or read its local download metadata. Ubisoft does not publish a public mapping that makes codes such as 17006, 17014, or 17015 a definitive diagnosis.
- Only one game fails: check that game’s ownership, account link, library folder, and existing files first.
- Every game fails: check Ubisoft service availability, the launcher, the network, and folder permissions.
- It happens only through Steam or Epic: confirm you are signed into the Ubisoft account linked to the store entitlement, and start the install from the store that owns the game.
A successful Ubisoft login does not prove that the account currently signed in owns the game. If you see a numeric code, record it, but do not assume the number alone identifies the cause.

Check whether Ubisoft services are available
Try signing in to Ubisoft’s website and opening Ubisoft Connect’s game library. If possible, test another Ubisoft game or update. Ubisoft’s support pages and channels can change, so there is not necessarily one public status page that will show every incident. Start with the Ubisoft Connect download and help page or the Ubisoft support hub.
If multiple games fail at once and Ubisoft services appear unavailable, wait and retry. Reinstalling the launcher or repeatedly clearing local files will not fix a service-side problem.
Fully restart Ubisoft Connect and Windows
- Exit Ubisoft Connect using its system-tray menu if it is running there.
- Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager. End any Ubisoft Connect or Ubisoft Game Launcher processes that remain.
- Restart Windows, open Ubisoft Connect, and retry the download.
- If the problem affects only one game, try another title or update as a comparison.
Temporarily disconnect from a VPN or proxy while testing. If the download works on a different network, such as a phone hotspot, that points toward a local network, router, ISP, or resolver issue; it does not prove which one is responsible.

Run Ubisoft Connect as administrator
- Close Ubisoft Connect completely.
- Open the Start menu and search for Ubisoft Connect.
- Right-click the app and choose Run as administrator. The wording may vary slightly by Windows version.
- Sign in if asked, then retry the download.
If elevation lets the download start, investigate permissions on the launcher or the selected library folder rather than making administrator mode a permanent workaround. Do not disable Windows security controls to avoid correcting a folder-access problem.

A damaged cache or download record can prevent a new download from initializing. Ubisoft provides instructions for emptying the Ubisoft Connect PC cache. A cautious approach is to rename the cache first, so you can restore it if the launcher behaves unexpectedly.
- Exit Ubisoft Connect and confirm its background processes have closed in Task Manager.
- In File Explorer, find the folder where Ubisoft Connect is installed, then open the Ubisoft Game Launcher folder and locate cache.
- Rename the folder to cache-backup rather than deleting it immediately.
- Start Ubisoft Connect, sign in, and retry the download. If the launcher works normally, you can remove the backup later.
A commonly cited older installation path is C:Program Files (x86)UbisoftUbisoft Game Launchercache, but it is not universal. The folder may be in a different location if you chose a custom install path or installed another client version. Renaming the cache is not the same as deleting your game library or save files.

Check the destination drive, free space, and folder access
- Make sure the selected drive is connected and visible in File Explorer. If it is an external drive, check that it stays connected and does not disconnect or sleep during downloads.
- Confirm that the drive has enough free space. An update can need temporary working space in addition to the final patch size.
- In the selected library folder, try creating and deleting a small test folder using your Windows account. If that fails, Ubisoft Connect may not have the access it needs.
- Check whether the drive letter changed, the drive is read-only, or Windows reports file-system errors.
- For testing, choose a simple location such as
C:Ubisoft Gamesrather than a restricted system folder. Avoid installing to a manually created directory under a protected location.
If Windows Security’s Controlled folder access or another antivirus product blocks the legitimate Ubisoft Connect executable, allow that executable through the protection feature and test again. Keep the exception limited to the actual Ubisoft installation; do not turn protection off indefinitely or grant “Everyone” full control over an entire drive.
Reset DNS and TCP/IP only if the basics point to a network issue
Use these commands if Ubisoft services appear available but Ubisoft Connect still cannot reach them, particularly if other Ubisoft services also fail. They will not fix a missing game entitlement, inaccessible folder, or corrupted launcher cache.
- Open Command Prompt as administrator.
- Run the following commands:
ipconfig /flushdns
netsh int ip reset- Restart Windows and try again.
ipconfig /flushdns clears the computer’s local DNS resolver cache. netsh int ip reset resets TCP/IP configuration and may affect custom network settings. Record any custom configuration before using it. Changing DNS servers is a separate step and is not a guaranteed fix: it changes the resolver your computer uses, not Ubisoft’s download servers.

Check the Ubisoft account and the store that owns the game
If you bought the game from Steam, Epic Games Store, or another third-party storefront, verify that Ubisoft Connect is signed into the Ubisoft account linked to that purchase. Check whether the game appears in that account’s Ubisoft Connect library, and launch the installation from the storefront that owns the license.
A game may have been linked to a different Ubisoft account already. Do not unlink accounts casually: account links and entitlements can have restrictions, and unlinking may create additional access problems. If the wrong Ubisoft account is linked, contact Ubisoft Support rather than experimenting with account changes.
Point Ubisoft Connect to existing game files
If the game is already on the drive, do not delete its folder to troubleshoot a download error. This can happen after moving drives, reinstalling Ubisoft Connect, or installing through Steam or Epic.

- Confirm that the existing folder contains the game files and that the drive is connected.
- In Ubisoft Connect, look for an option to locate or discover an installed game. Menu labels and availability can vary by client version.
- Select the existing game folder and let the launcher discover or verify the files.
- If it cannot use those files, preserve the original folder while testing a different installation location; avoid starting a second download until you know the existing files are not reusable.
Finding existing files is different from downloading another copy. Community reports describe download errors, including code 17006, in third-party-store and game-specific situations, but they are anecdotal rather than official code definitions: Ubisoft community report and Steam Deck community report.
Update or reinstall Ubisoft Connect without deleting the game
- Get the current installer from Ubisoft’s official download page.
- Close Ubisoft Connect and install the current client over the existing installation, then restart Windows and test again.
- If that fails, uninstall only Ubisoft Connect. Keep your game-library folders; do not remove them as part of launcher troubleshooting.
- Reinstall the client, sign in to the account that owns the game, and point Ubisoft Connect to existing game files where possible.
Reinstalling the launcher and deleting game folders are different actions. Removing the game data can force a large redownload, and reinstalling the client does not guarantee that every local launcher setting will remain intact.
What error codes 17006, 17014, and 17015 tell you
These numbers are useful to include in a support request, but available reports do not establish a universal cause for any one of them. For example, code 17006 appears in reports involving different games and circumstances. Keep the full message with the code instead of searching for a fix based on the number alone. Community examples include reports of 17006 and 17014; they are not official diagnoses.
Contact Ubisoft Support with the useful details
If the download still will not start, use the Ubisoft support hub and provide details that distinguish a network, account, and file problem:
