Streamlabs has holiday collections and says many library overlays are free, but not every Christmas design is necessarily free. Check the selected theme’s status before building your scene.
Where to find free Christmas overlays
Start with the Streamlabs Overlay and Widget Theme Library. Its holiday collections make seasonal designs easier to browse, and Streamlabs says many overlays and widget themes are free. The complete library is available with Streamlabs Ultra, and some animated overlays or widget themes may require Ultra. Treat the collection as a place to look, not a promise that a particular Christmas design is free: confirm the access status of the theme you select.

If a design is not free, choose another item whose listed access suits you rather than assuming the library’s general free-overlay statement applies to every theme.
Check the overlay before adding it
- Software compatibility: Confirm that the item supports your setup—Streamlabs Desktop, OBS with the Streamlabs plugin, or manual use of its image files.
- What is included: Check whether you are getting a scene overlay, alerts, widgets, or a set of components. A seasonal frame and a full scene package are not the same thing.
- Access: Look for an explicit free or Ultra designation on the item; access can vary by theme.
- Usage terms: Read the individual artwork’s terms, particularly if your stream is monetized. OBS’s license does not grant rights to third-party graphics.
Add a Christmas overlay in Streamlabs Desktop
- Open the library and choose a Christmas or holiday overlay. Verify its access status and the components it includes.
- Select and install the overlay. In the installation flow, choose the components you want and confirm in Streamlabs Desktop.
- Open the relevant scene in your scene collection and check that the overlay appears. If the package includes separate scenes or components, review each one you intend to use.
- Check the result in the canvas and preview before going live. Make sure the artwork does not cover important content such as gameplay, captions, or alerts.
Streamlabs’ overlay setup guide also describes importing an .overlay file through Settings → Scene Collections → Import Overlay File. Follow the import prompts, then review the scenes and sources in the collection.

Add an overlay to OBS
Streamlabs documents two routes for OBS: use its plugin, or use a scene collection import without the plugin. The plugin guide says the plugin is free to download and use, while some features and premium themes are Ultra benefits. Check the selected overlay’s access terms separately from the plugin’s price.
- Choose an installation route. If the theme offers an OBS-compatible plugin or scene collection, follow its instructions. For a Streamlabs
.overlayfile, the documented import route is Settings → Scene Collections → Import Overlay File. - For image files, open the target scene in OBS and add each overlay image as a source. Use the source controls to position and scale it on the canvas.
- Check source order. In the Sources list, place the overlay above the gameplay or camera content it should frame. Keep text and alerts visible where the artwork has openings.
- Preview each scene you plan to use, including any Starting Soon, Live, or BRB scene. Adjust placement if the design obscures essential content.
Streamlabs’ Plugin for OBS Guide and overlay setup guide describe these workflows. OBS itself is free for any use and may be used commercially, according to the OBS Project Help Portal; that applies to the OBS software, not automatically to graphics or other assets.

Before you go live
- Preview the full scene at the same canvas size you use for your stream; check edges, text, and placement.
- Confirm the overlay does not block gameplay, important interface elements, alerts, or captions.
- Check that the package and each graphic are licensed for your intended use, including monetized streaming where applicable.
- Do a final scene check in OBS or Streamlabs Desktop before starting the YouTube broadcast.
