Permanent, no-cost CS2 hosting is rare. In 2026, FSHOST is one of the few ready-made free options, but its server stops and is deleted when you leave. Most other “free” offers are trials, credits or refund guarantees. If you need a server that remains available without a provider’s expiry policy, self-hosting the dedicated server is the only durable free route—and you provide the computer, internet connection, bandwidth and maintenance.

What counts as “free” CS2 hosting?
Hosting pages use “free” for several different arrangements. Separate them before choosing a server:

- Trial or credit: free for a fixed period or until an account credit is consumed; billing normally begins afterward.
- Money-back guarantee: you pay first and request a refund under stated conditions. That is not free hosting.
- Session-only hosting: the server exists while you are connected or actively using it, then stops or is removed.
- Self-hosting: the software may cost nothing, but your own hardware, electricity, internet service and administration are the infrastructure.
The distinction matters most for persistence. A group arranging a one-evening match can use a session-only server. A community that expects players to return at any hour needs an always-on machine or a paid service.

Free tiers and promotional terms can change. Treat an offer as temporary until its current terms state the price, duration, resource limits, deletion policy and what happens when a trial ends.

FSHOST: the practical short-session choice
FSHOST is the clearest ready-to-use free offer identified for CS2. Its free tier allows up to 14 players and includes mods and plugins already installed. The appeal is immediacy: you do not need to install SteamCMD, configure a Linux machine or maintain a public IP before starting a game.
The decisive limitation is lifecycle. The comparison information says the free server stops and is deleted when you leave. It is therefore not a 24/7 community server, and anything that depends on the instance remaining online after your session will fail. Start it shortly before the match, give players the address, and assume the instance will not persist for the next event.

FSHOST states that free servers are supported by Pro users. That explains the business model but is a provider statement rather than an independently verified uptime or capacity guarantee. Check the live dashboard and terms for current player limits, data retention and any queue or inactivity rules.
Why the other “free” listings need caution
GratisVPS
GratisVPS uses the phrase “100% Free Forever” and advertises NVMe storage with instant deployment. Those are marketing claims; the governing terms were not verifiable in the available listing. Do not upload a world, configuration or custom plugin until you know whether the offer has an account requirement, resource quota, inactivity deletion, traffic cap or payment trigger.

Kamatera’s 30-day credit
The Kamatera listing describes a 30-day free trial and $100 credit. A credit can cover a suitable virtual machine during that window, but it is still a trial. Record the end date, understand the hourly rates and remove the instance before the credit expires if you do not intend to pay. The same listing calls storage and bandwidth “unlimited”; that description was not confirmed, so do not plan a high-traffic server around it.
Trials and refund policies elsewhere
VPSServer.com, IONOS, HostGator, Ultahost and InterServer appear in review lists with free trials or money-back guarantees. A refund policy requires an initial payment and may exclude setup fees, excess usage or cancellations after a deadline. Several of these companies primarily sell general web hosting, so verify dedicated-game-server support, allowed ports, CPU performance, operating-system access and the exact refund conditions before installing CS2.

Self-hosting avoids a provider’s trial clock. It is not cost-free in the broader sense: the computer consumes power, your internet plan supplies upload bandwidth, and an outage or reboot takes the server offline. You also become responsible for software updates, firewall rules, backups and protecting the machine.
What you need
- A computer or virtual machine that can remain powered on for the hours you want players to connect.
- Sufficient disk capacity for the CS2 server files, updates, logs and any mods. One third-party guide mentions roughly 60 GB, but that figure was not isolated and should not be treated as a current requirement; leave headroom instead.
- An internet connection that permits inbound traffic and supplies enough upload capacity for your player group.
- Administrative access to install SteamCMD, create a dedicated installation directory and configure the operating-system firewall and router.
- A Game Server Login Token (GSLT) for app 730. Guides disagree about exactly how the token affects discoverability, so treat it as a required part of a properly authenticated setup.
Install the files with SteamCMD
Third-party setup guides describe the following general sequence. Paths differ between Windows and Linux; use a dedicated directory rather than mixing server files with your personal Steam library.

- Install SteamCMD from the official distribution for your operating system and open its command shell.
- Choose an empty server directory, then log in anonymously and download app 730:
steamcmd +login anonymous +force_install_dir <server-directory> +app_update 730 validate +quitThe guides identify app 730 as the CS2 client and dedicated-server application. That is a third-party statement; CS:GO used a separate dedicated-server app ID, so do not reuse an old CS:GO installation recipe without checking every command.
Create and apply a Game Server Login Token
Use the Steam account’s Game Server Login Token management page, select app 730, and copy the generated token into your server launch configuration. Keep it private: a token is an authentication credential, not a value to publish in a Discord message or configuration screenshot.

One guide says the server will not appear in the public browser without a valid GSLT; another says direct connections may work but the instance will not be a properly authenticated, VAC-eligible listing. Valve documentation could not be verified for this point, so use a valid token and test both browser visibility and direct joining rather than assuming one behavior.
Launch the dedicated server
Start the server executable from the directory where SteamCMD installed it, passing the dedicated-server switch and your token. The executable path varies by platform and build, so use the binary supplied in your installation:

<path-to-cs2-server-binary> -dedicated +sv_setsteamaccount <GSLT>Keep the process running in a service manager or terminal session that will not close when you disconnect. Add your normal map, game-mode and configuration parameters only after a basic launch succeeds; changing several variables at once makes network troubleshooting harder.
Open the network path
- Permit inbound UDP 27015 in the machine’s firewall.
- If your configuration or guide uses a second query or game port, permit UDP 27016 as well; not every setup requires it.
- Forward the same port(s) from your router to the server’s local address when the machine is behind NAT.
- Give players your public address and port, not the private address shown only inside your home network.
Do not expose unrelated administrative ports. If your internet provider uses carrier-grade NAT, ordinary router forwarding may not be enough; you would need a reachable public address or a different network arrangement.

Common failure points and fixes
The FSHOST server vanished
For the free tier, stopping and deletion after you leave is expected behavior, not a crash to repair. Recreate the server for the next event and keep any configuration or mod list outside the temporary instance.
The self-hosted server is not visible publicly
Check that the launch command includes a valid GSLT, the server process is still running, and the required UDP port is open both on the host firewall and router. Because published guides disagree about browser listing and VAC status, test a direct connection separately from browser discovery.

Players time out while you can connect locally
A local connection proves only that the process is listening inside your network. Verify the router’s port-forward target, use the public address from an outside network, and confirm that your internet service is not placing you behind carrier-grade NAT.
SteamCMD reports an update or path problem
Use an empty, writable installation directory, repeat app_update 730 validate, and make sure the launch command points to the executable in that same directory. Keep enough free disk space for the download and future updates rather than relying on a minimum-size estimate from an old guide.
What is established—and what is not
As of 14 October 2026, the dependable conclusions are narrow: permanent free provider hosting is uncommon; FSHOST offers a real but session-limited free server; and self-hosting is the only option that avoids a provider’s trial or deletion policy. No published statistics establish typical free-host performance, uptime or player capacity beyond the stated FSHOST limit. Valve’s official setup documentation was not verified for these instructions, so confirm token, listing and port behavior against current Valve guidance when it becomes available.
