Garena Free Fire 1.99.1 and Free Fire MAX 2.99.1 were May 31, 2023 Android-era releases, not current versions. They are useful mainly as historical builds or restoration targets. For normal play, install the current edition from Garena or an authorized app store. Garena warns that unauthorized APKs and modified clients can expose your account to bans, while an old client may fail authentication even when its APK and data install correctly.
What the two version numbers mean
Free Fire and Free Fire MAX are separate applications with separate package and release numbering. Free Fire MAX 2.99.1 is not simply a newer build of standard Free Fire 1.99.1.

| Edition | Historical build | Date | Purpose and status |
|---|---|---|---|
| Garena Free Fire | 1.99.1 | May 31, 2023 | Standard, generally lighter edition; historical build reported in the May 2023 coverage. |
| Free Fire MAX | 2.99.1 | May 31, 2023 | Higher-fidelity edition; the date appears in Apple’s version history and the archived Android release record. |
Apple’s Free Fire MAX history records version 2.99.1 on May 31, 2023 (App Store listing). An APKMirror archive records an arm64-v8a Android package for the same MAX release and displays Android 4.1+ package metadata and a Garena International I signature record (release archive; arm64 package record). “Android 4.1+” is metadata from that archive, not a promise that the game will run on a modern phone or connect to today’s servers.
Garena’s site now documents 2026 updates, including OB54 dated June 23, 2026, so neither 1.99.1 nor 2.99.1 should be described as the latest release (Garena Free Fire; Garena update news).

What the May 2023 update added
The May 2023 coverage reproduces changes attributed to that update. They describe the state of the games at the time, not features guaranteed to remain in a 2026 installation.
- Achievement System.
- Duo Active Skills mode in Clash Squad Ranked.
- Customizable quick messages.
- Alok character awakening.
- New character Sonia.
- Clash Squad Season 19, scheduled to begin June 1, 2023 at 17:00 GMT+8.
- Color Cube-related Battle Royale content.
- Gameplay, loot, vending-machine, safe-zone and Gloo Wall adjustments.
The source labels the patch “Winterlands,” although that name is inconsistent with the May 2023 timing; it is safer to treat the list above as reported May 2023 patch content rather than rely on that label as an official update name. See the contemporaneous account at Android Sage.
APK, OBB and today’s Android packaging
An APK is the installable Android application package. An OBB traditionally stores large expansion data separately from the APK. Older game releases sometimes required downloading both files, installing the APK and copying the OBB into an Android/OBB folder.

- Redeemable towards millions of items store-wide at Amazon.com or certain affiliated websites.
- Available for immediate delivery. Gift cards sent by email can be scheduled up to a year in advance.
- No returns and no refunds on Gift Cards.
Current Google Play delivery can instead use app bundles, split APKs, asset packs and store-managed downloads. Android’s scoped-storage rules may also restrict manual access to Android/obb. Therefore, finding an old ZIP does not establish that its APK and OBB will install, that the files match, or that the live service will accept the client.

- Open Garena’s official site and follow the download option for your region, or use an authorized store.
- Search for the official app named Free Fire or Free Fire MAX; check the publisher and region before installing.
- Let the store and the game download their own data. Do not add a separately sourced OBB.
- Keep the installation updated through the same authorized channel.
Garena’s anti-hack guidance recommends authorized stores such as Google Play, the iOS App Store, Huawei AppGallery, Xiaomi App Store and OPPO App Market where available, and warns that unauthorized APKs may result in an account ban (Garena Anti-Hack FAQ).
Historical APK + OBB procedure for standard Free Fire
The May 2023 article reported this procedure for the standard Free Fire package. It is archival documentation, not a supported installation recipe.

- Place the standard Free Fire OBB in
Android/OBB/com.dts.freefireth/. - The filename reported by that source is
main.2019116185.com.dts.freefireth.obb. - Launch the game only as a compatibility test; expect a forced update or server rejection.
The source does not establish an equally reliable OBB path and filename for Free Fire MAX 2.99.1. Do not copy the standard package’s directory or filename to MAX by assumption. The historical instructions are documented at Android Sage.
Free Fire or Free Fire MAX?
| Criterion | Standard Free Fire | Free Fire MAX |
|---|---|---|
| Hardware target | Generally positioned as the lighter option for less capable phones. | Designed for higher-fidelity presentation and therefore more demanding hardware. |
| Historical build here | 1.99.1 | 2.99.1 |
| Preferred current distribution | Store-managed installation. | Store-managed installation. |
| Archival evidence | May 2023 article reports an OBB procedure. | APKMirror records an arm64-v8a package; exact OBB details are not established here. |
| Main archival hazards | Package, OBB and server mismatch; storage restrictions. | Same risks, plus arm64 architecture and typically larger data requirements. |
Garena presents Free Fire as accessible across smartphones and MAX as a premium battle-royale experience on its official site. Actual performance depends on the device, operating-system version, region and current game build.

If you must preserve or test a 2023 build
- Use a non-primary test device or emulator profile and back up important game data first.
- Confirm the exact package name, CPU architecture and release before installing.
- Keep the APK and OBB from the same release; never combine files from different versions.
- Check the APK signature when your archival tools support it, and scan every file.
- Avoid signing into a primary account until the files’ provenance is clear.
- Do not use modified, “unlimited diamonds,” cheat or “anti-ban” packages.
- Stop if the installer requests permissions unrelated to the game.
An archive record or a publisher signature shown by a third-party index does not turn that index into an official Garena distribution channel. Regional package identifiers can also differ.

Common installation and login failures
“App not installed”
Typical causes include an incompatible architecture, an existing installation signed with another certificate, a conflicting package, insufficient storage, a corrupt APK or Android blocking installation from that file source. Back up account access before removing any working installation.
Missing or invalid OBB
The folder may be wrong, the directory name may not match the package, the APK and OBB may be different releases, or the game may expect Play Store asset delivery. Scoped-storage restrictions can prevent manual placement even when the path is correct.
The game demands an update
This normally indicates a server-side version requirement. Update through an authorized store rather than seeking a modded client or a package intended to bypass the requirement.

Login warnings or account penalties
Stop using the sideloaded or modified client and return to an authorized installation. Garena explicitly links unauthorized APKs and modified clients with ban risk in its Anti-Hack FAQ.
Several APKMirror variants appear
Variant pages can list different architectures or packaging formats. Select only a variant that matches the device; the archive identifies the arm64 build separately and does not claim universal compatibility (APKMirror package record).
Bottom line for archival download searches
Free Fire 1.99.1 and Free Fire MAX 2.99.1 accurately belong to May 31, 2023. They can document a past release or support a controlled archival experiment, but installation success does not imply offline play, current-server access or account safety. Ordinary players should use the current official release; archival users should treat every old APK and OBB as untrusted until its package, architecture, signature and provenance are verified.
