Sometimes—but not automatically. In GTA Online, a free Hao’s Special Works (HSW) benefit has only been documented as part of specific promotions or rewards. Rockstar has offered a complimentary HSW conversion for a particular GTA+ event vehicle, and a one-time console-migration reward included a Karin S95 that was already fully converted by HSW. Simply having access to HSW, skipping Hao’s Intro Race, buying GTA V, or owning an HSW-compatible car does not by itself make the conversion free.
Whether you can claim anything today depends on your platform, account history, GTA+ event eligibility and the claim window shown in your game. The safest rule is to treat a free HSW conversion as an offer you must see and claim in-game, not as a permanent entitlement.

What “free HSW upgrade” can mean
Players use “free HSW upgrade” for several different benefits. Separating them prevents the most common misunderstanding: unlocking the service is not the same as receiving a free performance conversion.

On PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, Rockstar’s title-update notes state: “Players no longer need to complete Hao’s Intro Race to access the HSW Upgrade Service and mods (PS5 and Xbox Series X|S only).” This removes a prerequisite for using the service. It does not say that any conversion, engine modification or other HSW mod costs nothing.

A vehicle that is already HSW-converted
A reward can give you a car with the conversion already applied. You do not receive a transferable coupon in that situation; the reward is the specified vehicle in its converted state. The Karin S95 supplied through the launch-era console migration program is the clearest official example.
A complimentary conversion for a specified car
A promotion can waive the performance-upgrade charge for one named vehicle. The GTA+ event featuring the Grotti Brioso R/A worked this way: eligible members brought that vehicle to the Los Santos Car Meet and claimed a complimentary HSW performance upgrade. A promotion of this kind is tied to its event period and eligibility rules, so an old announcement cannot prove that the same offer is active now.

The table shows why a simple “yes” or “no” answer is misleading. A free car, a waived conversion fee and permission to use the workshop are separate outcomes.
The GTA+ Brioso R/A offer
Rockstar’s GTA+ event announcement described a limited promotion in which members could bring the Grotti Brioso R/A to the Los Santos Car Meet and claim a complimentary HSW performance upgrade. The same announcement included two HSW-exclusive liveries. Those details identify the vehicle and the type of benefit, but they do not provide a standing discount for every GTA+ member.
Event promotions have a claim window. Membership obtained after the event, a vehicle purchased after the window closed, or a platform that was not included in the event rules may not qualify. Because the announcement is historical, do not rely on a forum post or an old video title saying “free forever.” Look for a current GTA+ event tile, an in-game claim prompt, or a currently dated Rockstar announcement that names the Brioso R/A offer.

What the offer did not imply
- It did not make every HSW-compatible vehicle free to convert.
- It did not establish a permanent GTA+ discount on all HSW services.
- It did not turn access to the Los Santos Car Meet into a free-upgrade voucher.
- It did not prove that a player who missed the event can claim the reward later.
The Karin S95 migration reward
When Grand Theft Auto V and GTA Online launched for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, Take-Two and Rockstar described a one-time migration process from PS4 or Xbox One. The announcement promised special rewards, including “a free Karin S95 fully converted by the experts at Hao’s Special Works.” In practical terms, the reward was a particular car delivered in an HSW-converted state, not an account-wide coupon that could be applied to any vehicle.
This distinction matters if you already own a Karin S95 or are starting on a new-generation console without an eligible last-generation account. Buying the car separately does not recreate the migration reward. Likewise, migrating a character outside the stated PS4-to-PS5 or Xbox One-to-Xbox Series X|S path does not establish eligibility. The reward was tied to the migration program and its one-time conditions.

What migration does and does not carry over
The launch announcement discussed migration of Story Mode progress and GTA Online characters and progression. It did not describe a general free-HSW entitlement for every migrated vehicle. Treat the Karin S95 as the named reward; do not infer that all cars in a migrated garage receive free conversions.
Skipping Hao’s Intro Race is not a free upgrade
Older explanations often claim that completing Hao’s Intro Race is how every player earns a free HSW conversion. Rockstar’s title-update notes support a narrower statement. On PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, players no longer need to complete the race to access the HSW Upgrade Service and mods. That is an access change, not a price change.
Once the service is available, the normal vehicle-selection and modification screens can still show a charge for the conversion or individual mods. If your screen lets you enter HSW customization but displays a cost, nothing is wrong with your account; the race requirement and the conversion price are separate systems.

What the 2026 workshop notes add
Rockstar’s GTAV Title Update 1.72 notes, last updated April 9, 2026, describe HSW access through the Vinewood Club Garage and through a mansion Vehicle Workshop upgrade. The notes specifically mention GTA+ members who own a mansion with that workshop upgrade. These are additional places or conditions for reaching HSW options. They do not state that the conversion itself is free.
Therefore, a player can have a newly documented route to the workshop and still need to pay the in-game conversion charge. Check the vehicle’s HSW menu after entering the applicable facility; the displayed price and any “free” or “complimentary” label are the authoritative account-level result.
How to check whether your account has a free offer
- Confirm your platform. Note whether you are on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, PS4, Xbox One or another version. The Intro Race access rule and the migration reward are generation-specific.
- Check current GTA+ and event messaging. Open the GTA+ or event information shown in GTA Online and read the named vehicle, membership requirement and expiration or claim date. Do not assume an old Brioso R/A announcement is still live.
- Bring the specified vehicle to an HSW-capable location. For the documented GTA+ example, that location was the Los Santos Car Meet. Other facilities may apply if your current update and ownership meet the stated requirements.
- Open the HSW upgrade screen. Select the performance conversion for the eligible vehicle. A genuine complimentary offer should be identified by the game as free, complimentary or otherwise reduced to no charge before you confirm.
- Check the final confirmation screen. Make sure the amount due is zero and that the offer applies to the intended vehicle. Do not confirm a purchase merely because the workshop itself opened.
- Capture the account state if the offer is time-limited. A screenshot of the in-game tile, vehicle name and claim deadline can help if the prompt disappears before you use it.
If no current tile or zero-price confirmation appears, the official examples above do not give you a basis to claim a free conversion. You can still use HSW normally if your platform and facility provide access, but the game will show the applicable charge for the selected vehicle.

Why a supposed free upgrade may not appear
The event ended
Promotional rewards are not necessarily retroactive. If the event tile has disappeared or its claim date has passed, an archived announcement cannot reactivate it.
The vehicle is wrong
The documented GTA+ example named the Grotti Brioso R/A. Owning another Brioso variant or another HSW-compatible car does not satisfy a vehicle-specific offer unless the current promotion says so.

The platform is outside the offer
The migration reward and the Intro Race access note both identify console generations. A benefit described for PS5 and Xbox Series X|S should not be generalized to PS4, Xbox One or PC without a separate current statement.
You have workshop access but no promotion
Being able to enter an HSW workshop proves only that the service is available. Read the conversion line and the final amount, rather than treating the unlocked menu as a coupon.
The reward was already used
The migration example was described as a one-time reward. If the account already completed its eligible migration, starting another character or buying another copy of the game does not establish a second Karin S95 reward.
Does buying a physical or digital edition make HSW free?
No official statement in the cited launch material makes the purchase of a GTA V edition, by itself, a free-HSW offer. A game edition may determine whether you can play the current-generation version and access its features, but eligibility for a promotion or migration reward is a separate account and platform question.

The practical answer
You can get HSW content for free in GTA Online under qualifying circumstances, but there is no general, always-on free HSW upgrade. The documented examples are the time-limited GTA+ Brioso R/A promotion and the one-time PS4/Xbox One migration reward containing an HSW-converted Karin S95. The removal of Hao’s Intro Race as an access requirement on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, plus newer workshop access routes, changes how you reach HSW—not what every conversion costs.
Check your platform, account history and current in-game event prompt. Only a live offer that names your vehicle and shows a zero charge should be treated as a free upgrade.
