West of Loathing is the closest match for an open-world western and has exceptionally modest PC requirements. Best in the West is explicitly free to play, but its Steam description presents a short online fight on a steam train rather than a persistent open world. This guide separates those two searches, lists the published hardware requirements, and gives conservative settings advice without inventing FPS figures that have not been benchmarked.
Which game does “free open-world western” describe?
Search results combine two different requirements: a game can be free-to-play, open-world, western-themed, or some combination of those traits. The available store descriptions point to two different candidates.

West of Loathing: requirements for a low-end PC
Steam describes West of Loathing as “a slapstick comedy stick-figure wild west adventure role-playing game” with “a sprawling open world, chock full of danger, quests, puzzles, and mysteries.” Its hand-drawn 2D presentation and low published memory and storage targets make it the least demanding option in this comparison.

The Steam page also lists separate macOS and SteamOS/Linux requirements. The specific figures are not reproduced in the available listing, so do not assume the Windows numbers apply unchanged to another operating system.
A current entry-level or office PC that meets these old baseline specifications should have substantial hardware headroom for the game’s 2D art. That is an inference from the presentation and requirements, not a measured performance result. The published page does not provide a guaranteed frame rate, frame-time data, GPU benchmark, or a detailed quality-setting matrix.
Can your low-end PC run West of Loathing?
Use the minimum table as a compatibility check rather than a promise of a particular FPS. A machine with at least a 2.8 GHz Core 2 Duo-class processor, 2 GB of RAM, 512 MB of graphics memory, and 4 GB free storage meets the stated Windows floor. Newer integrated graphics may have more raw capability than that historical requirement, but compatibility can still depend on drivers and the operating system.

Check the four practical limits
- Operating system: The listed floor is Windows XP SP2+, while the recommended listing starts at Windows 7 SP1+. A modern 64-bit Windows installation is newer than both, but very old hardware may have driver limitations.
- RAM: The minimum is only 2 GB, yet the operating system and background applications also consume memory. Close browsers, launchers, recording tools, and overlays if the game pauses while loading.
- Graphics memory: The minimum lists 512 MB and the recommended tier 1 GB. Integrated graphics report shared memory differently from dedicated cards; compare your system’s usable graphics capability rather than relying only on the label in a diagnostic utility.
- Storage: Keep more than the stated 4 GB free so the operating system can create temporary files and updates. Installing to a nearly full drive can cause unrelated loading failures.
Safe first settings
- Install the latest graphics driver available for your operating system.
- Start at your display’s native resolution with the game’s default settings.
- Play for 10–15 minutes in a busy area, during transitions, and while opening menus; these are more useful checks than standing still in an empty scene.
- If you see hitching, close background programs before lowering image quality. The requirements do not identify a specific setting responsible for stutter.
Best in the West: the free-to-play option
The Steam listing labels Best in the West “Free To Play.” Its description says, “Each player starts in their own box car on an old western steam train,” and describes players fighting for ten minutes. That is a western multiplayer scenario, but it is not evidence of a persistent, freely explorable open world. Treat it as the free-to-play match for this search, not as a confirmed open-world substitute.
| Component | Minimum | Recommended |
|---|---|---|
| Operating system | 64-bit Windows 7, 8.1, or 10 | Not separately stated beyond the listed Windows support |
| Processor | Intel Core i5-4430 or AMD FX-6300 | Intel Core i5-6600K or AMD Ryzen 5 1600 |
| Memory | 8 GB RAM | 16 GB RAM |
| Graphics card | GeForce GTX 960 2 GB or Radeon R7 370 2 GB | GeForce GTX 2080 |
| Graphics API | DirectX 11 | DirectX 11 |
| Storage | 15 GB | 30 GB |
| Network | Broadband internet required | Broadband internet required |
The recommended graphics entry is written as “GTX 2080” in the store requirements. Preserve that wording when checking the listing; do not silently reinterpret it as a different model. The page gives no measured FPS target, latency requirement, or minimum connection speed.
How heavy are other western games?
Wild West Legacy
The support requirements specify 16 GB of RAM, a GTX 1060 or Radeon RX 590-class GPU, and 15 GB of storage at minimum. That minimum tier is associated with 720p and low-quality settings. The recommended tier still lists 16 GB RAM, moves to an RTX 2070 Super or RX 6700 XT-class GPU, and targets 1080p at high quality. These are publisher targets, not independent frame-rate tests.

Red Dead Redemption 2
The published minimum is 8 GB RAM, a GTX 770 or Radeon R9 280-class GPU, and 150 GB of storage. Recommended memory rises to 12 GB, with a GTX 1060 or RX 480-class GPU, while storage remains 150 GB. The storage requirement alone is 37.5 times West of Loathing’s stated 4 GB, illustrating how different the workloads are.
| Game | Minimum RAM | Minimum GPU class | Minimum storage | Published target |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| West of Loathing | 2 GB | 512 MB graphics memory | 4 GB | No resolution/quality target stated |
| Best in the West | 8 GB | GTX 960/R7 370 2 GB | 15 GB | No resolution/quality target stated |
| Wild West Legacy | 16 GB | GTX 1060/RX 590 class | 15 GB | 720p low minimum; 1080p high recommended |
| Red Dead Redemption 2 | 8 GB | GTX 770/R9 280 class | 150 GB | No resolution/quality target stated in the cited requirements |
Performance settings for an older GPU
Requirements tell you whether a configuration is supported; they do not establish frame rate. None of the cited pages supplies a controlled benchmark that guarantees 30, 60, or any other FPS value. Use the following order to stabilize frame time while preserving image quality.
1. Establish a known baseline
- Set the game to the monitor’s native resolution.
- Use the default preset or the publisher’s stated target. For Wild West Legacy minimum hardware, that means 720p and low quality; its recommended tier is specified as 1080p and high.
- Restart the game after changing major graphics options so cached shaders and memory allocations are rebuilt.
2. Lower the settings that cost the most
- Resolution: Reduce it one step if the GPU is saturated. This usually has a larger effect than changing small texture details.
- Shadows: Lower shadow quality or disable advanced shadows when outdoor scenes produce unstable frame times.
- Effects: Reduce volumetric effects, particles, ambient occlusion, and post-processing before cutting texture quality on a card with adequate video memory.
- View distance: Shorten the draw distance if distant scenery causes sustained GPU load or streaming hitching.
- Textures: Lower textures when video memory is full and you see asset pop-in or severe pauses, rather than using this option first on a card with enough memory.
3. Diagnose the type of slowdown
- Consistently low performance: Lower resolution and shadows, then effects and view distance.
- Brief pauses while turning or entering a new area: Check storage activity, background applications, and available RAM; a lower preset may not fix an asset-streaming bottleneck.
- Online delay in Best in the West: Distinguish network latency from rendering. Broadband is required, but the listing does not state a speed or latency threshold.
- Crashes or missing graphics: Verify the game files, update the GPU driver, and confirm that the system meets the required DirectX version.
Choosing the right game for your hardware
- Very old or office PC: West of Loathing is the realistic first choice because its Windows minimum is 2 GB RAM, 512 MB graphics memory, and 4 GB storage.
- Older gaming PC with 8 GB RAM and a GTX 960/R7 370-class GPU: It meets the stated minimum for Best in the West, provided you have broadband internet and a 64-bit Windows version listed by the store.
- Modern mid-range PC targeting 1080p high: Compare your hardware with the recommended Wild West Legacy tier, which names an RTX 2070 Super/RX 6700 XT-class GPU and 16 GB RAM.
- Large storage budget: Reserve 150 GB for Red Dead Redemption 2; do not treat a machine that can install a 4 GB game as automatically suitable for it.
What the published specifications cannot tell you
A minimum requirement is not a measured performance promise. It may indicate that a game starts and is supported under a particular configuration, while actual frame rate varies with resolution, drivers, background load, thermal throttling, patches, and the scene being rendered. The cited information does not establish guaranteed FPS, frame-time consistency, controller support, loading times, or the effect of individual settings for any of these games.
For that reason, use the numbers to screen hardware, then test in representative gameplay. Record whether the problem is steady GPU load, memory pressure, storage streaming, CPU limitation, or network delay before changing settings. This avoids blaming an older graphics card for a broadband or background-process problem.
Bottom line
West of Loathing is the strongest answer to “open-world western game” and should run on remarkably modest Windows hardware: 2 GB RAM, 512 MB graphics memory, and 4 GB storage at minimum. Best in the West is the strongest answer to “free-to-play western,” but it requires a much stronger PC, broadband internet, and a match-based steam-train format rather than a confirmed persistent open world. Start with the publisher’s stated quality target, lower resolution, shadows, effects, and view distance in that order when an older GPU struggles, and treat every FPS expectation as unverified unless you have a benchmark for your exact hardware.
