Free OpenClaw Hosting: Options and Limits Compared (2026)

Oracle Cloud Always Free A1 is the only realistic free always-on host for OpenClaw in 2026, but it uses ARM, has limited capacity and may reclaim idle instances. Compare Google Cloud, AWS, Railway, Fly.io, local hardware and low-cost VPS alternatives.

Yes, you can run OpenClaw without paying for server hosting, but only one free option is a credible fit for an always-on deployment. Oracle Cloud’s Always Free Ampere A1 allocation provides 2 OCPUs and 12 GB of memory in total. It is ARM-based, capacity can be difficult to obtain, and Oracle may reclaim an idle instance. Google Cloud’s free e2-micro can stay online but has only 1 GB of RAM; Railway and Fly.io are either too small or not continuous. A free host also does not make model inference free: API calls are billed separately.

What “free OpenClaw hosting” actually means

There are three separate costs and constraints to distinguish:

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Compute: the virtual machine or computer that keeps OpenClaw running.
  • Availability: whether that machine can run continuously, rather than sleeping after a monthly allowance is exhausted.
  • Model usage: charges from an external large-language-model API, unless you run a model locally on hardware you own.

A host can be free while the model calls are not. Conversely, a local computer avoids a server bill but is not an always-on service if it sleeps, reboots, or loses internet access. For a permanent, internet-reachable deployment, Oracle Cloud Always Free is the only option in the current comparisons that combines enough memory with a no-expiry compute allowance. Even there, “always free” does not mean guaranteed capacity or guaranteed retention.

Free hosting options compared

Option Reported resources or limit Can remain online? Practical fit for OpenClaw
Oracle Cloud Always Free, Ampere A1 2 OCPUs and 12 GB memory total for VM.Standard.A1.Flex; can be one instance or up to two 1-OCPU instances Yes, unless Oracle reclaims an idle instance Best free choice; requires ARM-compatible setup and available A1 capacity
Google Cloud e2-micro Always Free 1 GB RAM Yes Very tight; one hosting guide says it is viable only when the model is supplied by a cloud API, not run locally
AWS t2.micro free offer 1 GB RAM Yes, but only for 12 months Useful for a temporary evaluation, not a permanent free plan
Railway free tier 512 MB maximum; 550 execution hours per month (about 22.9 days) No, not for an entire month continuously Too little headroom and a monthly runtime cap
Fly.io free tier 256 MB Yes Below OpenClaw’s stated 512 MB minimum
Standard free web hosting No root access and no long-running background processes No Cannot host a persistent OpenClaw process
Your own computer No hosting fee Only while powered, awake, connected, and running Good for testing; unreliable as a 24/7 service
Webhost365 managed service Free only for existing paid Webhost365 customers Managed Not a general free option for new users
Budget paid VPS About $3 per month at the low end; one secondary source lists IONOS from $3.00 Yes Most predictable fallback when free capacity or reclaim risk is unacceptable

The resource figures above are the limits reported for the named tiers, not a benchmark of OpenClaw performance. A machine that technically starts the process may still struggle once your workload, logs, dependencies, or model client use more memory.

Why Oracle A1 is the realistic free choice

Enough memory for the stated minimum

OpenClaw’s stated minimum is 512 MB of RAM. Oracle’s current Always Free A1 pool totals 12 GB, leaving substantially more room for the operating system, runtime, updates, and bursts of activity than the 256 MB Fly.io tier or the 512 MB Railway ceiling. You can assign the pool to one larger virtual machine or split it into as many as two 1-OCPU instances. A single instance is usually simpler because it avoids dividing memory and managing two separate environments.

ARM is the important qualification

A1 instances use Ampere ARM processors. Your operating system, OpenClaw release, language runtime, native extensions, and any helper binaries must all support ARM64. A package that exists only as an x86-64 binary will not run unchanged. Before creating the server, check that the installation method you intend to use offers an ARM64 build or a source-based installation path. If a dependency fails to install on ARM, adding more memory will not solve the architecture mismatch.

Current limits are lower than many guides claim

Older 2025–2026 guides commonly quote 4 OCPUs and 24 GB of memory. Oracle’s current Always Free resource page reports 2 OCPUs and 12 GB total for VM.Standard.A1.Flex. A community report says the reduction was enforced on 18 August 2026, but Oracle’s exact change date was not confirmed in the documentation available for this comparison. Plan against the official 2-OCPU/12-GB figure shown in your own tenancy, not an older tutorial.

A third-party breakdown also lists monthly ceilings of 1,500 compute hours and 9,000 GB-hours for the reduced allocation; those numbers are not an Oracle quotation and may change. Treat the console’s current quota display as authoritative before you design around multiple instances or a full-month workload.

Oracle’s idle-instance reclamation risk

Always Free compute can be reclaimed when Oracle considers an instance idle for more than seven days. The documented test uses the 95th percentile over that period: CPU utilization below 20%, network utilization below 20%, and, for A1 shapes, memory utilization below 20%. Oracle sends a warning email before reclaiming the instance.

This rule matters for an OpenClaw installation that waits quietly for messages. A service can be healthy yet appear idle if it receives little traffic. Reclamation can remove the VM and require you to restore from backups or recreate the deployment when capacity returns. It is not the same as a normal reboot: assume that local state may be lost unless you have stored it separately.

How to reduce the operational risk

  • Read Oracle warning emails and act before the stated deadline.
  • Keep configuration and any valuable OpenClaw state in a backup that is not tied solely to the VM’s boot disk.
  • Monitor CPU, memory, and network usage so you know whether the instance is approaching the idle thresholds.
  • Do not generate artificial traffic merely to defeat a provider policy; unnecessary activity wastes resources and can violate acceptable-use rules.
  • Some guides suggest moving the tenancy to Pay As You Go. Oracle does not charge for resources that remain within Always Free limits, but billing settings and quotas should be reviewed carefully before making that change.

Capacity and region constraints

A1 capacity is in high demand. “Free” does not guarantee that an instance can be created when you need it; the console may report that the chosen availability domain has no capacity. Try another availability domain or an allowed region in your account, then retry later if necessary. A home-region restriction is mentioned in some summaries, but it was not verified against Oracle’s official documentation in this comparison, so check the region rules displayed for your tenancy rather than assuming you can deploy anywhere.

Capacity is separate from quota. You can have unused Always Free credits and still be unable to obtain an A1 shape in a busy region. Keep a current backup and a documented rebuild procedure so a capacity outage does not become data loss.

How to set up a free Oracle OpenClaw server

The exact OpenClaw installation command depends on the release and its official instructions. The provider-side sequence below avoids assuming a particular package manager while covering the decisions that determine whether the deployment will work.

  1. Confirm the current allowance. In the Oracle Cloud console, open the Always Free resource or quota view and verify that your tenancy shows 2 OCPUs and 12 GB of A1 memory, or whatever current allocation Oracle displays at the time you deploy.
  2. Create an ARM64 VM. In Compute, create an instance using the VM.Standard.A1.Flex shape. Select an ARM64-compatible operating-system image, then assign resources conservatively so the VM remains inside the free pool. One 1-OCPU instance with enough memory for your workload is easier to maintain than two divided machines.
  3. Record recovery details. Save the instance name, region, private and public addresses, SSH key location, and boot-volume details in a password manager or operations note. Do not rely on memory if the instance has to be rebuilt.
  4. Connect over SSH and update the operating system. Apply security updates before installing OpenClaw. Use a non-root administrative account for routine work, keep the firewall limited to the ports the service actually needs, and disable password-based SSH if your chosen image supports key-only access.
  5. Install the ARM64-compatible OpenClaw release. Follow OpenClaw’s current installation documentation and verify every dependency is available for ARM64. If the installer downloads a prebuilt binary, confirm its architecture; if no ARM build exists, stop rather than forcing an incompatible package.
  6. Configure the model connection. Add the API credentials and endpoint required by the model provider, or configure a locally hosted model if you have the hardware and software to do so. Keep secrets in environment variables or a protected secret store, not in a public repository or world-readable configuration file.
  7. Run it under a service manager. Configure the process to start after reboot and restart after an unexpected exit. Test a deliberate reboot and confirm that OpenClaw returns without an interactive shell remaining open.
  8. Test from outside the VM. Send a real request, inspect logs, and confirm that inbound and outbound network rules allow the intended traffic. Check memory use during startup and during a representative workload, not just while idle.
  9. Back up and monitor. Export configuration, retain logs long enough to diagnose failures, and set alerts for disk, memory, and service health. Also watch Oracle’s idle metrics and warning messages because an otherwise correct deployment can still be reclaimed.

When the smaller free tiers can work

Google Cloud e2-micro

The e2-micro’s 1 GB of RAM meets the stated 512 MB minimum on paper, but leaves little room for the operating system and runtime. A hosting guide reports that it can work when OpenClaw calls a cloud model rather than loading a model locally. Treat that as a constrained configuration: keep the process count low, avoid memory-heavy local inference, and monitor for out-of-memory termination.

CanaKit Raspberry Pi 5 Essentials Starter Kit (4GB RAM)
  • CanaKit Raspberry Pi 5 Essentials Starter Kit

AWS t2.micro

A t2.micro provides 1 GB of RAM and can stay online during its free period, but the offer lasts 12 months. It is suitable for a time-boxed evaluation or migration rehearsal. Put an expiry reminder on your calendar; after month 12, ordinary instance and storage charges can apply.

Railway

Railway’s free tier is capped at 512 MB and 550 execution hours per month, roughly 22.9 days if consumed continuously. It may host a short demonstration, but it cannot provide uninterrupted service for a full month. The execution-hour limit is independent of whether the process itself is lightweight.

Fly.io

At 256 MB, the reported free tier is below OpenClaw’s stated 512 MB minimum. A process might start in an unusual stripped-down setup, but it would be outside the documented memory requirement and is not a sound recommendation.

Free web hosting and managed exceptions

Traditional free web hosts generally deny root access and prohibit long-running background processes, so they cannot run a persistent OpenClaw service. Webhost365’s free managed offer applies only to customers who already pay for another Webhost365 service; it is not a general-purpose free signup.

Why your own computer is free but not always-on

Running OpenClaw on a desktop, laptop, or spare single-board computer removes the VPS bill and can provide more memory than a free micro-instance. It is often the best way to test an ARM dependency or local model. The trade-off is availability: sleep mode, automatic updates, a power cut, router failure, or a changed IP address can take the service offline. If you choose this route, configure a wired connection where possible, disable sleep for the host, arrange automatic restart, and treat it as a development or personal-use setup rather than a dependable public endpoint.

Model costs are separate from hosting

Free compute does not make inference free. Calls to a hosted model API are billed by that provider under its current pricing and limits. DeepSeek is reported to offer a free tier with generous limits, but those limits can change and should be checked before relying on it. Ollama can run models locally on your own hardware, avoiding per-call API charges while shifting the cost to RAM, storage, electricity, and the performance of that hardware.

For a fair budget, track both lines separately: the monthly hosting charge (zero only while the selected free allowance remains valid) and the model bill (zero only when a genuine free allowance or local inference covers your usage). Logging request volume and token consumption helps prevent an unexpectedly large API invoice.

Choosing the right path

  • Choose Oracle A1 when you need a continuous free server, can use ARM64-compatible software, and accept capacity and reclamation risk.
  • Choose Google Cloud e2-micro only for a very small, API-backed deployment where 1 GB is enough.
  • Choose AWS t2.micro for a 12-month trial, not a forever-free promise.
  • Choose Railway for a short-lived demonstration that can tolerate monthly shutdowns.
  • Choose your own computer for development, local-model experiments, or private use where occasional downtime is acceptable.
  • Choose a paid VPS when uptime, predictable capacity, and recovery options matter more than eliminating a roughly $3 monthly bill.

Before committing, answer four questions: Does the host meet the 512 MB minimum with headroom? Is the CPU architecture compatible? Can the service run continuously under the plan’s time rules? What happens to your data if the provider reclaims or expires the instance?

Common failure modes and fixes

The instance cannot be created

This is usually A1 capacity, not a software error. Try another availability domain or an eligible region, retry later, and keep a paid-VPS fallback if the service is time-sensitive.

The installer fails on ARM

Check the architecture of the failing package and replace it with an ARM64 build or a supported source installation. Do not substitute an x86 binary simply because a tutorial used it.

Pi 5 Offers lightning-fast CPU speed, a PCI Express interface, a Real Time Clock (RTC) and a power button and runs significantly cooler than Pi 4.

The process is killed for lack of memory

Inspect peak rather than idle memory use. Remove unnecessary services, avoid local model loading on 1-GB tiers, and move to the larger A1 allocation or a paid VM if the workload genuinely needs more headroom.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The free VM disappears after a quiet week

Review Oracle’s warning email and the 95th-percentile CPU, network, and A1 memory metrics. Restore from your external backup, then decide whether the workload is too idle for a free tier or whether a paid plan is justified.

API bills appear despite free hosting

Separate the model provider’s account from the VM account, set usage alerts where available, and inspect request logs. Move to local inference only if your hardware can run the model acceptably.

Bottom line

For 2026, Oracle Cloud Always Free’s ARM A1 pool is the strongest no-cost route to an always-on OpenClaw server: 2 OCPUs and 12 GB total, subject to capacity shortages and seven-day idle reclamation. The allocation is lower than older guides claim, and ARM compatibility is mandatory. Every other free tier in this comparison is either smaller, time-limited, capped by monthly hours, or unsuitable for a persistent process. Budget separately for model API usage, and move to a paid VPS when predictable uptime is worth roughly a few dollars per month.
