Yes—there are plenty of legal PC games you can download without paying, but “free” can mean different things. The list below separates permanently free-to-play games from limited-time giveaways, demos, freeware, open-source games, and subscription access. It is aimed primarily at Windows PC users in the United States; availability, requirements, prices, and regional restrictions can change.

What “free PC game” means
| Category | What you get | Typical limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Free-to-play | Permanent access to the base game | Optional cosmetics, battle passes, expansions, premium currency, or other purchases |
| Free to claim | A normally paid game added permanently to your store account | You must claim it before the promotion ends |
| Freeware | A game distributed at no charge by its creator | It may be older, niche, unsupported, or hosted outside a major store |
| Open-source | A free game whose code may also be available to inspect or modify | Installation and compatibility can require more effort |
| Demo or prologue | A limited sample of a game | It is not the complete release |
| Free weekend or beta | Temporary access | Access can expire, and progress may be reset |
| Subscription access | Access through a paid service such as PC Game Pass | It is not free unless you already pay for the subscription |
This guide uses “free download” only for legitimate sources. Cracked games, torrents, key generators, unauthorized mirrors, and “pre-activated” installers are piracy risks—not free-game recommendations.
Best permanent free-to-play PC games
Competitive shooters and battle royale
- Counter-Strike 2 — A competitive tactical shooter built around precise gunplay, economy management, and objective-based rounds. It is free-to-play through Steam and requires an online connection. Optional purchases include cosmetic items and marketable content.
- Apex Legends — A fast battle royale and hero shooter with squad-based abilities and movement. The base game is free through Steam or EA; optional cosmetics, battle passes, and character-related purchases are available.
- VALORANT — A round-based tactical shooter from Riot Games that combines precise weapons with character abilities. It uses the Riot Client and a Riot account, with optional cosmetic purchases.
- Fortnite — Epic’s free game includes battle royale, creative tools, and additional player-made or official experiences. It requires the Epic Games Launcher and an Epic account; purchases are primarily cosmetic or seasonal.
- Overwatch — A team-based hero shooter available through Steam or Battle.net. Expect online play, a publisher account, and optional cosmetic and seasonal purchases.
- PUBG: BATTLEGROUNDS — A more tactical battle royale focused on positioning, looting, and gunplay. It is free-to-play on Steam and requires online multiplayer access.
MOBAs and strategy
- League of Legends — A competitive five-versus-five MOBA with a large roster of champions. It runs through Riot’s client and offers optional cosmetic purchases and character unlocks.
- Dota 2 — A complex competitive MOBA with a deep strategic learning curve. The base game is free on Steam, with online play and optional cosmetic content.
- Teamfight Tactics — An auto-battler set in the League of Legends universe. It is free to start, although availability and account requirements depend on the current PC client and region.
Action RPGs and loot-driven games
- Warframe — A cooperative action game combining third-person combat, missions, crafting, and extensive progression. It is free-to-play on Steam and the official site, with optional purchases and online requirements.
- Destiny 2 — A free entry point into Bungie’s online shooter, including selected activities and content. Major campaigns, expansions, and some endgame content are paid, so the complete Destiny 2 experience is not free.
- Path of Exile — A deep action RPG focused on character builds, loot, and seasonal leagues. The core game is free-to-play; optional purchases mainly support customization and convenience.
- Genshin Impact, Honkai: Star Rail, and Zenless Zone Zero — Three online HoYoverse RPGs with substantial story content, regular updates, and randomized character or item acquisition systems. They are free to download but use premium currencies and optional purchases; check the current launcher and account requirements before installing.
Co-op, multiplayer, and casual games
- Rocket League — Football-style matches played with rocket-powered cars. It is free through Epic Games and requires online access for its main multiplayer experience.
- Fall Guys — A colorful party platformer built around short competitive rounds. It is free-to-play through Epic Games, with optional seasonal purchases.
- Marvel Rivals — A team-based hero shooter with Marvel characters and online matches. The base game is free on Steam; expect a publisher account or additional login requirements if requested by the current client.
- The Sims 4 — The base life-simulation game is free through EA, while many expansions, game packs, and stuff packs are paid.
- War Thunder and World of Tanks — Online vehicle-combat games with free entry points and extensive optional purchases. Both are online-first and may require standalone publisher launchers.
Free PC games you can claim and keep
Some stores periodically give away games that normally cost money. This is different from free-to-play: you must add the title to your account during the promotion, but a successful claim can preserve access after the offer ends.

Epic Games says a claimed weekly game remains in the account library permanently, even if you do not download it immediately. See Epic’s support explanation and check the official free-games page for the current title and deadline.
How to claim one
- Open the official Epic free-games page.
- Sign in to an Epic account or create one.
- Open the giveaway marked as free.
- Select the claim or purchase button.
- Complete the checkout at a $0 price.
- Confirm that the game appears in your library.
- Download it later through the Epic Games Launcher.
Because giveaways rotate, do not rely on an undated list. Confirm the title, normal price, promotion price, start date, exact end date and time, region restrictions, and whether the offer grants permanent ownership. A free weekend or beta does not provide the same rights.

Free single-player and offline-friendly games
Many popular free-to-play games are online services. If you want solo play or limited-internet gaming, start with freeware and open-source projects—but check each game’s current launcher, DRM, and operating-system support.

Free games for low-end PCs
Do not assume that a $0 game will run well on an older laptop. Live-service games can require modern graphics hardware, large installations, and frequent updates. Compare the current minimum requirements on the official store page before downloading.
Potentially suitable starting points include League of Legends, Dota 2, Brawlhalla, Team Fortress 2, Unturned, Old School RuneScape, OpenTTD, 0 A.D., The Battle for Wesnoth, and SuperTuxKart. Treat “low-spec” as a relative label: verify the minimum operating system, processor, RAM, graphics hardware, storage, 64-bit requirement, and whether online play is mandatory.

Where to download safely
Use the official storefront or the developer’s own download page:
- Steam
- Epic Games Store
- GOG
- itch.io’s free-games section
- EA’s free-to-play catalog
- Battle.net
- Riot Games
- Ubisoft
Before installing, check the publisher name, system requirements, reviews, age rating, storage requirement, online-account requirement, and current platform availability. Avoid “full version free” sites for paid games, suspicious advertisements disguised as download buttons, torrents, cracks, key generators, and modified installers. Do not disable Windows security or antivirus simply because an installer requests it.

Launcher and account requirements
| Store or publisher | Account | Launcher considerations |
|---|---|---|
| Steam | Steam account | Usually Steam alone, although some games add a publisher login |
| Epic Games | Epic account | Epic Games Launcher |
| Riot Games | Riot account | Riot Client |
| EA | EA account | EA app may be required |
| Battle.net | Battle.net account | Battle.net app |
| Ubisoft | Ubisoft account | Ubisoft Connect may be required |
| HoYoverse | HoYoverse account | HoYoPlay or a title-specific launcher may apply |
| itch.io | Optional or creator-specific | Depends on the individual game |
These arrangements can change. The game’s current official page is more reliable than an old installation guide.
Are free-to-play games really free?
The base download may cost nothing, but publishers commonly monetize free games through cosmetic items, battle passes, premium currencies, character or hero unlocks, randomized purchases, paid expansions, advertising, subscriptions, or time-saving purchases. A more accurate description is: the base game is free to download, with optional paid content.
Some games also lock substantial campaigns, expansions, or endgame content behind purchases. Others require an always-online connection, anti-cheat software, two-factor authentication, age verification, or a publisher account in addition to Steam or Epic. Consider those requirements part of the real cost of access.
Recommended Free Tools
Choose by your PC and play style
- For competitive multiplayer: Counter-Strike 2, VALORANT, Apex Legends, Dota 2, or League of Legends.
- For co-op progression: Warframe or Destiny 2’s free entry point.
- For an RPG: Path of Exile, Genshin Impact, Honkai: Star Rail, or Zenless Zone Zero.
- For casual sessions: Rocket League, Fall Guys, or SuperTuxKart.
- For solo and offline-oriented play: OpenTTD, 0 A.D., The Battle for Wesnoth, The Dark Mod, or Dwarf Fortress Classic.
- For an older laptop: Begin with the official minimum requirements for OpenTTD, Wesnoth, League of Legends, Brawlhalla, or similar lightweight titles rather than downloading a large modern live-service game first.
- For limited storage: Check the current installation size and patch requirements; live-service games can grow significantly after updates.
- For fewer launchers: Prefer a Steam-only or standalone title, but verify whether a publisher account is still required.
Optional tools for a growing library
A free multi-launcher manager such as Playnite can help organize games installed from Steam, Epic, GOG, and other services. If storage becomes the problem, an external SSD from a reputable manufacturer such as Western Digital or Crucial may help; check compatibility and current pricing. A headset is useful for team communication but is not required to play. PC Game Pass is another option for a rotating catalog, but it is a paid subscription—not a free-game service.
