You can play online multiplayer in supported free-to-play Xbox games without an Xbox Live Gold membership. Xbox made that change on April 21, 2021. The games available can change, so use Xbox’s live free-to-play catalog and the Microsoft Store listing below to check what you can play now.
Do free Xbox games require Gold for online multiplayer?
No, not for supported free-to-play games. Xbox Wire announced on April 21, 2021, that players could use online multiplayer in free-to-play games without an Xbox Live Gold membership. The announcement covered the former Gold requirement; check Xbox’s current subscription information for present-day membership terms.
This applies to supported free-to-play titles, not automatically to every game that happens to be free. A game’s own listing and instructions are the best way to confirm its current multiplayer features and requirements.
Where to find Xbox games you can play online for free
- Browse Xbox’s Free-to-Play Games catalog. It is a live catalog for Xbox Series X|S and Xbox One, not a permanent roster.
- Check the Microsoft Store top-free online-multiplayer listing. Treat it as a discovery page: open a game’s product page to check its platform, online multiplayer availability, and purchase notices.
- Confirm the game’s own requirements. Availability and requirements can differ by region, account, age group, game mode, or feature; the live catalog pages do not establish that every case is identical.

What “free-to-play” does and does not mean
Free-to-play means you can access the game without buying it; it does not mean every optional item or benefit is free. Microsoft Store listings can flag in-app purchases, so review the purchase information on a title’s product page before playing.
Catalogs change: a title may be added, removed, or offered differently over time. Xbox’s catalog and Microsoft Store listing are more useful for checking what is currently available than a fixed article list.
