The safest way to get FreeCell on Windows 10 is to install Microsoft Solitaire Collection from the Microsoft Store, then select FreeCell inside the app. Windows 10 normally provides Microsoft’s FreeCell experience through this collection—not through the old standalone Windows 7 FreeCell program.
Avoid unofficial “Windows 7 FreeCell” installers. They may be outdated, repackaged, unsupported, or bundled with unwanted software.

The official FreeCell download for Windows 10
Microsoft Solitaire Collection is Microsoft’s standard Windows 10 route for FreeCell. FreeCell appears alongside other solitaire games, including Klondike, Spider, Pyramid, and TriPeaks.
Open the official Microsoft Solitaire Collection Store listing and verify that the publisher is Microsoft before installing. Store availability and displayed details can vary by region, Windows edition, account, and device.

This is not necessarily the same experience as the Windows 7 executable. The interface, sounds, statistics, deal numbering, advertising, account prompts, and other behavior may differ.

If you only search for “FreeCell” in the Store, you may see independent apps such as FreeCell Solitaire or FreeCell Solitaire – Classic. These are separate listings and should not automatically be treated as Microsoft’s original game. Check the publisher, privacy information, advertising disclosures, permissions, and purchase terms before installing.
Is FreeCell free on Windows 10?
Microsoft Solitaire Collection can be downloaded through the Microsoft Store without an upfront purchase, but “free” does not necessarily mean ad-free, offline, or free of optional purchases. Inspect the current Store listing for advertising and in-app-purchase notices.
The Microsoft Store may ask you to sign in with a Microsoft account to complete installation. Account-based features can include synchronization, achievements, Xbox-related functions, purchases, or other online services. Some gameplay may work without an account or an active connection, but offline behavior depends on the app version and feature; do not assume that every function works offline.

If Microsoft Store will not open
Try these steps in order:
- Restart the computer.
- Confirm that the internet connection works and that Windows has the correct date and time.
- Launch Microsoft Store by searching for it from Start rather than using an old shortcut or bookmark.
- Open the Store’s Library and look for Microsoft Solitaire Collection. If it is associated with your account, select the download or install icon.
- Sign out of Microsoft Store and sign in again if the download is stuck.
- Install pending Windows and Microsoft Store updates.
- Use Microsoft’s Windows apps troubleshooting guidance.
- If the app is installed but unstable, use Windows’ available app Repair or Reset options, then reinstall it if necessary.
Microsoft’s Store support hub covers Store installation and troubleshooting paths. On a school or work computer, an administrator may have blocked Store apps or changed which applications are available.

If FreeCell is missing
Search Start for both Solitaire and Microsoft Solitaire Collection. Then check Microsoft Store → Library to confirm which app is installed. Common causes include installing a different solitaire app, an incomplete installation, using another Microsoft account, a restricted organizational PC, or an app problem on that Windows build.
Reinstall Microsoft Solitaire Collection from its official Store listing rather than manually copying executable or system files from another computer. If the Store version continues to fail, use a reputable browser or desktop alternative.

Can you install the old Windows 7 FreeCell?
The old Windows 7 FreeCell program is not the normal official Windows 10 distribution path. Unofficial “Windows 7 games for Windows 10” packages may be modified, unsupported, obsolete, or bundled with malware and unwanted applications.
Microsoft recommends obtaining programs from trusted publishers and retail websites. Its guidance on installing programs from online sources is especially relevant to old game packages. Do not use cracked versions, generic software mirrors with unclear publishers, installers offering toolbars or system cleaners, or downloads that claim to be “official Microsoft FreeCell” without linking to Microsoft.

FreeCell alternatives for Windows 10
| Option | Best for | Main drawback |
|---|---|---|
| Microsoft Solitaire Collection | Microsoft’s mainstream route and multiple solitaire games | Store dependency; current account, advertising, and online behavior can vary |
| FreeCell Plus | Dedicated FreeCell play, variants, undo, statistics, and saved games | Paid; the vendor lists Windows version 4.4 dated January 10, 2023 |
| Pretty Good Solitaire | A large collection with advanced features | Paid after a 30-day trial and excessive for players who want only FreeCell |
| Goodsol Free Solitaire | A free desktop alternative | The vendor lists version 7.1 dated July 19, 2017 |
| Browser FreeCell | Playing without installing software | May involve advertising, tracking, online dependence, or limited saved statistics |
FreeCell Plus
FreeCell Plus is a paid FreeCell-focused program with related variants, automatic saving, statistics, full undo and redo, autoplay or automove, game-number compatibility, and Climb Mode. The vendor lists a 30-day trial and a US$9.95 one-time price. Its listed Windows version is 4.4 from January 10, 2023, so treat it as a legacy-compatible alternative rather than a recently released product.
Pretty Good Solitaire
Pretty Good Solitaire includes 1,080 solitaire games, including FreeCell, along with saved games, statistics, customization, undo and redo, and daily quests. The vendor lists a 30-day trial and a US$24.95 one-time price, with Windows 7/8/10/11 compatibility shown on its product page. It is a better fit for someone who wants a broad solitaire collection than for someone seeking only a simple FreeCell board.
Goodsol Free Solitaire
Goodsol Free Solitaire is a free desktop collection of 12 games, including FreeCell. The vendor lists version 7.1 dated July 19, 2017 and Windows 7/8/8.1/10 compatibility. Because the listed version is old, it should not be treated as the default choice for modern Windows support.
Recommended Free Tools
Browser play
Browser FreeCell can be useful on a locked-down PC or when the Microsoft Store is unavailable. It avoids installation, but it is not the same as installing a Windows game. Use a known site such as the online options linked from FreeCell.org, and avoid buttons that redirect to unrelated installers. Browser games may have advertising, tracking, different rules engines, or limited offline support.
Windows 10 support warning
Windows 10 reached the end of standard support on October 14, 2025. The operating system can continue to run, but standard installations no longer receive Microsoft’s normal feature updates, security fixes, or technical support. Installing FreeCell does not extend Windows 10 support or make an unsupported PC secure.
For general security, use an appropriate supported Windows version or security-support option for your hardware and situation. That operating-system decision is separate from choosing a FreeCell app.
