It is not universal, and it does not include homebrew apps: the essential first step is checking your console’s DVD Player version and matching it to a supported image.
What FreeDVDBoot does—and what it does not
FreeDVDBoot is an exploit in the PS2 DVD Player. On a compatible console, a correctly prepared DVD can start uLaunchELF, a file manager and homebrew launcher. From there, you can run homebrew stored on USB or use the entry point to install another softmod. The project author’s write-up describes launching burned homebrew discs by inserting and booting them, like official discs.
The result is a disc-based entry point for supported systems—not a method that works on every PS2, and not a bundle of homebrew games or applications. Compatibility, disc readability, and the homebrew you choose are separate concerns.
Is my PS2 compatible with FreeDVDBoot?
Compatibility depends on the console revision and the DVD Player firmware installed on it. CTurt’s README lists supported DVD Player versions and gives specific guidance for phat systems; the community compatibility table records broad support for some slim families but partial or absent support for many phat families. Use the table as a community reference, not a guarantee for an individual console. Model number, region, DVD Player version, and language configuration can all matter.

Do not rely on a blanket rule such as “all slims work” or “only some phats work.” Check the exact firmware and compare it with the project’s supported image information before burning a disc. The README warns that an unsupported firmware or language configuration may not work.
How to check your PS2 DVD Player version
- Turn on the PS2 with no disc inserted.
- At the browser screen, press Triangle to open version information, as directed in the FreeDVDBoot README.
- Find and note the DVD Player version. Check the console’s model and region as well, then compare those details with the project’s supported configurations and the community compatibility table.
If you cannot match your console’s details to a supported configuration, do not assume that an image for a nearby version will work.

What you need to prepare a FreeDVDBoot disc
- A PS2 whose model and DVD Player version are supported by the selected image.
- The FreeDVDBoot ISO appropriate to that configuration, following the project’s language instructions.
- A blank DVD and a computer with a DVD burner, internal or external.
Use a DVD, not a CD. The PS2 Developer wiki prefers DVD-R, and PCSX2’s softmodding guide recommends slow-burn DVD-R media in its instructions. These are practical preferences, not guarantees: the console’s optical drive and the disc’s readability still affect whether boot succeeds.
How to burn and boot FreeDVDBoot
- Identify the DVD Player version and confirm the console is supported.
- Download the image that matches the supported model and DVD Player configuration. Follow the project’s instructions for language; do not substitute an image for an unsupported configuration.
- Use disc-burning software on a computer with a DVD burner to write the ISO to a DVD-R. Choose a slow burn, as recommended by PCSX2’s guide.
- Insert the finished disc into the PS2 and boot it. On a successful exploit, the expected initial program is uLaunchELF.
- From uLaunchELF, run compatible homebrew from USB or use it to install another softmod if you want a more convenient later boot method.
FreeDVDBoot compared with other PS2 softmods
PCSX2’s guide lists FreeMcBoot and Fortuna alongside FreeDVDBoot. The practical distinction is the boot medium: FreeDVDBoot starts from DVD, while FreeMcBoot is memory-card based. Fortuna is another software-based route. Which option is suitable depends on the console revision and the setup materials you have; if your system is unsupported by FreeDVDBoot, investigate an alternative’s compatibility with your exact model rather than assuming it will work.

- TWO SEPARATE 128 MB BANKS, NOT ONE POOL OF 256 MB: The selector on the front of the card chooses which bank the console talks to, and each bank is its own storage area with its own save list. Nothing spans the two, so a file written on one side is invisible from the other. Set the selector first and then turn the console on, because the console reads the position once at start-up and does not look again.
- BUILT FOR PS2 AND FOR THE SLIM, AND FOR NOTHING ELSE: It drops into the memory card slot made for PS2, on every revision from the first SCPH-10000 through to the 90000 series, fat or slim. It is not for the PS One, not for the PSX, and not for a fat PS3 running a disc in backward compatible mode. Those machines use a different card and will not read this one.
- IT IS A STORAGE CARD, AND IT WILL NOT RUN FREEMCBOOT: If the plan is to install a homebrew launcher, this is the wrong card and no amount of formatting will change that. What it does do is hold save files, and a lot of them, which is the job most people actually need a second card for.
- NO BOOT DISC, NO DRIVERS, NOTHING TO INSTALL: Push it into the slot and the console lists it straight away. Save sizes vary by title, and the back of a game case usually prints how many kilobytes a save needs, so you can work out how far one bank will go before you fill it.
- WHAT ARRIVES IS ONE BLACK CARD, 5.6 BY 4.1 BY 0.6 CM: Two habits keep a save file intact on any card of this kind: leave the console powered down while the card goes in or comes out, and do not cut the power while a title is writing.
FreeDVDBoot runs from a DVD and does not permanently alter the console, according to the PCSX2 guide. It is therefore useful as a disc-based entry point, but it is not the same convenience as having a memory-card softmod ready for later boots.

The console identifies it as a PlayStation 2 disc
The project README says a modchip may interfere with DVD Video handling and prevent the DVD Player from launching. Check whether a modchip is installed and whether it is affecting DVD Video behavior before treating this as proof that the ISO is incompatible.

The console says the disc is unreadable
Test an ordinary DVD movie in the console. If that also fails, the project points to optical-drive laser condition as a possible cause. If a movie reads normally, the burned disc or its media readability may still be the problem; verify the image, use DVD-R, and burn at a slow speed.
The disc reads but does not reach uLaunchELF
Recheck that the ISO matches the console’s DVD Player version, model support, and language configuration. When reporting a problem to the project, include the DVD Player version, ISO used, disc type, and exactly what the console displays or does; those details help distinguish a compatibility mismatch from a reading failure.
