When Windows reports that freetype.dll is missing, not found, or could not be loaded, the safest fix is usually to repair or reinstall the specific program that displayed the message.
FreeType parses font files and turns their outlines into readable pixels. It is not a normal Windows component, and it is not normally supplied in C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64. The application may carry its own copy beside the executable, or receive FreeType through a framework or package.

Do not download a replacement from a random DLL website or copy one into a system folder. The file may be the wrong build, wrong architecture, incomplete, or unsafe. A replacement can also hide the real problem, such as a damaged application installation or a missing Visual C++ runtime.
Fix 1: Repair or reinstall the application that reports the error
Time needed: 5–20 minutes, plus the time required to download the application.
#1 Best Overall
This is the most likely solution because freetype.dll belongs to the affected application’s installation environment. Games, media tools, emulators, PDF utilities, development tools, and other programs can all use different FreeType builds.
Identify the owning program
Read the error dialog carefully. Windows may show the executable name, or the error may appear immediately after launching a particular game or application.
Then check the program’s installation folder:
- Right-click the application shortcut.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Shortcut tab.
- Read the Target field to identify the executable.
- Click Open File Location if that button is available.
- Look for
freetype.dllbeside the program’s.exefile.
If the DLL is absent, do not search for a generic replacement first. Repair the program that should have installed it.
Repair from Windows Settings
For a traditional desktop application:
- Press Windows + I.
- Select Apps.
- Choose Installed apps on Windows 11, or Apps & features on Windows 10.
- Find the affected application.
- Select the three-dot menu on Windows 11, or select the application on Windows 10.
- Choose Advanced options if available.
- Select Repair.
- Launch the program again.
The Repair option may preserve settings and personal files. If it is missing or does not work, return to the same screen and use Reset only after confirming that the application’s settings and saved data are backed up.
Reinstall from the official source
If repair is unavailable:
- Uninstall the affected application from Settings → Apps.
- Restart Windows.
- Download the installer from the application’s official vendor or use its official launcher.
- Install the same application architecture required by your system and add-ons.
- Launch it before copying any DLL manually.
For a game, open its launcher and look for a command named Verify, Verify integrity, Scan and repair, or Repair files. This normally restores missing bundled files without replacing the entire installation.
How to tell it worked: the program starts without the freetype.dll message, and a fresh copy of the DLL appears in the application’s own folder when that application normally bundles it.
If reinstalling does not help, do not overwrite that copy with a download. Continue with the runtime and architecture checks below.

Fix 2: Check Windows Security Protection History
Time needed: 5–10 minutes.
Antivirus protection can quarantine or delete a bundled DLL after an application update, archive extraction, or change in detection rules.
- Open the Start menu.
- Type Windows Security and open it.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review recent entries for
freetype.dllor the affected application. - Expand an entry to see its path, detection, and action.
- Confirm that the file belongs to the trusted application installation.
- Verify the application’s publisher and source before restoring anything.
- Use Restore or Allow on device only when the file is authentic and expected.
Microsoft warns that allowing a file should be reserved for files you trust. If you cannot verify the file’s origin, leave it quarantined, remove the application, scan the computer, and reinstall the program from its official source.
Rank #2
After restoring a trusted file, launch the application again. If Windows Security immediately removes it, the application may be outdated or the file may genuinely be unsafe. Update the application and perform a full scan rather than repeatedly allowing the DLL.
Fix 3: Install the matching Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable
Time needed: 5–15 minutes.
A freetype.dll file can exist in the correct application folder and still fail to load because one of its own runtime dependencies is missing. This commonly involves the Microsoft Visual C++ runtime used when that particular FreeType build was compiled.

Download the supported packages from Microsoft’s Latest Supported Visual C++ Redistributable Downloads.
Choose the package according to the application, not simply according to whether Windows is 64-bit:
- A 32-bit application needs the x86 package.
- A 64-bit application needs the x64 package.
- An ARM64 application needs the arm64 package.
- On 64-bit Windows, both x86 and x64 may be necessary because many applications are still 32-bit.
To determine the program type, check the application’s documentation or vendor installer. You can also inspect the executable with a trusted diagnostic utility. Do not assume that a 64-bit version of Windows means every installed application is 64-bit.
After downloading the appropriate Microsoft installer:

Installing the latest v14 package does not replace every older Visual C++ generation. Older software may require an earlier redistributable listed on Microsoft’s supported downloads page. Install only packages obtained from Microsoft, and match the application’s architecture.
How to tell it worked: the DLL remains in the application folder, but the program now launches instead of reporting that the library could not be loaded.
Fix 4: Check for a 32-bit and 64-bit mismatch
Time needed: 5–20 minutes.
Windows cannot load a 64-bit DLL into a 32-bit process, or a 32-bit DLL into a 64-bit process. This is different from Windows’ own architecture. A 64-bit Windows installation can run many 32-bit programs, and those programs need 32-bit copies of their bundled libraries.
Rank #3
Architecture problems often appear as:
- “The procedure entry point could not be located.”
- “The application was unable to start correctly.”
- “This application is not designed to run on Windows.”
- A generic “could not be loaded” message even though
freetype.dllis present.
The correct fix is to reinstall the application and its dependencies as a matching set. Do not copy a 64-bit file from another program into a 32-bit application folder.

Check these locations only as clues:
C:Program Filescommonly contains 64-bit applications.C:Program Files (x86)commonly contains 32-bit applications.- A portable application may be stored anywhere and can still be either architecture.
These folder names are conventions, not proof. The application executable and the DLL must match, and the DLL must also be the build expected by that application.
Fix 5: Restore the exact application DLL after an update or move
Time needed: 5–30 minutes.
A program may fail after:
- An incomplete update
- Moving the application folder
- Extracting a portable package incorrectly
- Running a cleanup utility
- Replacing files manually
- Restoring only part of a backup
- Installing a plugin or mod with its own DLLs
If the application folder contains freetype.dll, check its location and timestamp against the rest of the installation. A file in a parent folder, another program’s directory, or a custom PATH directory may be selected instead of the intended copy.
The safest procedure is:
- Close the application.
- Remove unauthorized replacement DLLs from the application environment.
- Use the official launcher’s Verify or Repair command.
- If no repair function exists, uninstall and reinstall the application.
- Avoid adding DLL directories to the system
PATH. - Test the clean installation before adding plugins, mods, or copied configuration files.
Windows uses a DLL search process that can examine the application directory, system directories, the current directory, and other locations. Microsoft documents this behavior in its guide to Dynamic-link library search order. A stray copy with the same filename can therefore cause an entry-point error even when the correct file is present elsewhere.
Fix 6: Update related drivers only when the failure followed a hardware or graphics change
Time needed: 10–30 minutes.
FreeType is not normally a graphics driver file, so a driver update is not the first fix for a single application’s missing DLL. Consider it when the problem began immediately after a graphics driver, chipset driver, display adapter, or hardware change and multiple applications are now failing.
To update a graphics driver through Device Manager:
- Right-click the Start button.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Display adapters.
- Right-click the graphics device.
- Select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Install the offered driver if Windows finds one.
- Restart Windows and test the application.
For the most reliable result, use the graphics card or computer manufacturer’s official driver page when Device Manager does not find a suitable driver. Create a restore point before replacing a stable driver, especially on a gaming system with custom graphics settings.
Outbyte Driver Updater can reduce the manual work of hunting through hardware models and checking which of several drivers is stale; its free scan shows what it identifies, while driver installation is handled by the full version, and it is not required for repairing an application that owns freetype.dll.
How to tell it worked: other programs affected by the same driver problem recover, or the original application launches after the driver change. If only one application still fails, return to that application’s repair or reinstall process.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix 7: Repair Windows components with DISM and SFC
Time needed: 15–40 minutes.
Use Windows component repair when several unrelated applications are failing, Windows itself reports corrupted files, or the issue began after a broader system failure. These commands repair protected Windows components. They do not normally provide a third-party application’s freetype.dll.
Microsoft recommends running DISM before System File Checker. Open an elevated Command Prompt:
- Open Start.
- Type Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for it to finish.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
- Restart Windows and test the affected program.
Microsoft’s instructions for DISM and SFC explain the results and next steps.
If SFC reports that it repaired files, restart and test again. If it reports that it could not repair everything, repeat the process only as Microsoft’s guidance recommends and inspect the underlying Windows health issue. Do not expect SFC to recreate a DLL that belongs beside a game or third-party utility.
When repeated manual DISM and SFC runs leave you unsure what changed, Outbyte PC Repair can scan for issues and show what it identifies; repairs are performed by the full version, but reinstalling the application remains the definitive fix when that application owns freetype.dll.
Fix 8: Use System Restore after a recent system change
Time needed: 20–45 minutes.
System Restore is appropriate when the error began immediately after a driver installation, Windows change, software installation, or configuration change and a suitable restore point exists.
- Press Windows + R.
- Type
rstrui.exe. - Press Enter.
- Select Next.
- Choose a restore point created before the problem began.
- Select Scan for affected programs if available.
- Review the changes.
- Select Next, then Finish.
- Allow Windows to restart.
System Restore does not replace personal documents, but it can remove applications, drivers, and updates installed after the selected restore point. Microsoft describes the process in its System Restore guidance.
If only one application fails, restoring Windows is usually less targeted than repairing that application. Use it when the timing clearly points to a broader system change.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Do not use regsvr32 for this problem
regsvr32 freetype.dll is generally irrelevant. The command registers DLLs that expose registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer, typically for COM or ActiveX components. A normal FreeType runtime library is not generally a self-registering component.
Running it may produce an entry-point error, but that does not repair the file, install its dependencies, or fix an architecture mismatch. Microsoft documents the command’s actual purpose in its regsvr32 reference.
Why the error appears
| Error or situation | Likely cause | Best first action |
|---|---|---|
freetype.dll is missing or was not found |
The parent application was incompletely installed, updated, or cleaned | Repair or reinstall that application |
| The file exists but could not be loaded | Missing runtime dependency, wrong architecture, or blocked file | Install matching VC++ runtime and inspect the file source |
| Entry point not found | The wrong FreeType build is being loaded | Restore the exact DLL shipped with the application |
| Not designed to run on Windows | Corruption, truncation, invalid architecture, or a non-Windows file renamed as the DLL | Reinstall the owning application |
| Several applications fail | Windows corruption, malware, driver trouble, or a shared runtime problem | Check security, update Windows, then use DISM and SFC |
| Only one user profile fails | Permissions or environment differences | Compare the profile environment and application permissions |
A missing freetype.dll can also be a symptom of another missing dependency. If the application is repaired but still will not start, inspect its own logs or use a reputable dependency diagnostic tool rather than replacing files at random.
Best Value
A DLL extracted from a downloaded archive can also be blocked. If the source is trusted, right-click the file, select Properties, and look for an Unblock option. Do not unblock an unverified DLL.
Safe-source checklist
Use these sources instead of DLL index websites:
- The affected application’s official installer or launcher
- The application vendor’s repair or file-verification function
- Microsoft’s official Visual C++ Redistributable packages
- Windows Security Protection History
- Windows Update and the hardware manufacturer’s official driver package
- The FreeType project’s official source and project materials when building software yourself
FreeType can be built as a static library or a Windows DLL, so different applications may ship different builds. There is no single universal version, size, checksum, or installation path that applies to every freetype.dll.
FAQ
Is freetype.dll part of Windows?
No. It is associated with the open-source FreeType font engine and is normally an application dependency. Windows does not generally install one universal copy for every program.
Should I copy freetype.dll into System32?
No. Copying it into System32, SysWOW64, or a global PATH can create conflicts and still leave the original application missing its correct build. Restore the file to the application that owns it.
Will installing Visual C++ fix every freetype.dll error?
No. It helps when the DLL is present but cannot load because a Microsoft runtime dependency is missing. It does not fix a missing application file, wrong FreeType build, malware, or a 32-/64-bit mismatch.
Outdated Drivers Are Slowing You Down
One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchPC Slower Than It Used to Be?
A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11Do I need both x86 and x64 Visual C++ packages?
Possibly. A 64-bit Windows installation can run 32-bit applications, and those applications need the x86 runtime. Install the architecture required by the affected program.
Why does entry point not found appear when the file exists?
Windows found a DLL with the expected filename, but it is probably the wrong build or version for that application. Reinstall or verify the application instead of downloading a newer-looking replacement.
Can Windows Defender quarantine cause this error?
Yes. Check Windows Security → Virus & threat protection → Protection history. Restore a file only after verifying that it belongs to a trusted installation and that its source is authentic.
Will DISM or SFC download FreeType?
Normally, no. DISM and SFC repair protected Windows components. They are useful for broader Windows corruption, not as a source for an application’s bundled FreeType DLL.
What should I do if every application reports DLL errors?
Check Windows Security for malware, install pending Windows updates, review recent driver or software changes, and run DISM followed by SFC. If failures continue, inspect disk health and consider System Restore.
What is the correct final step if none of this works?
Note the exact error text, the affected executable, its installation path, application architecture, and whether freetype.dll exists beside it. Then contact the application vendor or reinstall that program from its official source. The correct DLL is the one built and packaged for that application, not a generic file chosen by name alone.
