Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Fresh code clues led longtime Valve watcher Tyler McVicker to suggest in February 2025 that a project known as “HLX”—widely assumed to be Half-Life 3—might be nearing the end of production. That was an interpretation of leaked and datamined material, not a Valve announcement. Follow-up reporting in July 2026 described a less certain outlook, and Valve has not publicly confirmed HLX as Half-Life 3 or announced a release date.
Why did the leaks suggest Half-Life 3 might be nearing completion?
On February 26, 2025, Ars Technica reported on McVicker’s reading of game-update data and Source engine strings. He interpreted several clues as evidence that a project labeled HLX could be in late-stage polish and optimization. Ars described HLX as widely assumed to be Half-Life 3, but that assumption has not been confirmed by Valve.

The clues Ars discussed included:
- A Dota 2 update exposed Source engine changes and an
AI_baseNPC.fgdfile containing circumstantial Half-Life references. The file described NPC simulation scaling that adjusts how much AI is simulated based on distance from the player. - A February 25, 2025 Deadlock update included the variable
hlx_fsr3_min_reactiveness. McVicker interpreted it as a sign of AMD FSR 3 upscaling support in a development build. A variable name alone does not establish that a feature will ship, or even settle the identity and scope of the project. - McVicker also discussed possible physics and NPC systems, including object properties, fluid simulation, NPC moods, and navigation around destructible hazards. These were interpretations of code signals, not a published feature list for an announced game.
Ars quoted McVicker saying, “This is getting to the point where it does feel as if Valve is nearing completion of the production of HLX.” That was his assessment of the clues, not a statement from Valve.
Is HLX actually Half-Life 3?
It remains unconfirmed in the public sources covered here. The code clues can support speculation about a Valve project and its possible systems, but they cannot by themselves establish the project’s identity, scope, readiness, or release plans. Ars characterized Half-Life 3 as the widely assumed identity of HLX; Valve has not publicly made that connection.

Valve’s About page lists Half-Life and Half-Life 2 among its earlier games and says some games in development remain top secret. The page does not name HLX, confirm Half-Life 3, or provide a timeline.
What did later 2026 reporting say?
A July 6, 2026 Abit.ee report summarized newer comments attributed to McVicker. It said he had described elements that did not meet Valve’s internal standards, rising system requirements, and the project being decoupled from Steam Machine plans. The report also said his sources were not optimistic about an announcement during the rest of 2026, and that Valve might not yet know when to reveal the project. These are secondhand claims about confidential development, not independently verified Valve disclosures.

A July 16, 2026 Escapist report quoted former Valve engineer Christopher Green responding to the question, “Can you give any info on the HLX project? wink wink.” Green replied, “I think you know the answer to that :-)” The article treated the response as a non-answer; it did not confirm what HLX is or when it might launch.

There is no verified basis to say that Half-Life 3 is nearly finished or to give an announcement or release date. The “nearing completion” claim came from McVicker’s February 2025 interpretation of datamined clues. The less optimistic outlook attributed to him in July 2026 makes that earlier assessment a poor basis for treating an imminent announcement as certain, but it is still not an official status update from Valve.

The strongest public conclusion is narrower: Valve has not confirmed Half-Life 3 or HLX, and the available reporting leaves the project’s identity, development status, and timing unsettled.
