In a 2015 GamesBeat interview, he described using Godus to learn touch-first design, direct publishing and free-to-play development at 22cans. “It’s an incredible world to reinvent yourself in,” he said.
Why Molyneux set out to reinvent himself
By the time Godus arrived in late 2014, Molyneux was known for console games. He told GamesBeat that he wanted to “reinvent myself from a console designer” and move into a new business built around multiplatform development. That meant learning the skills and responsibilities involved, rather than relying on the habits he had developed making console games.
Godus became the practical bridge. The Kickstarter-backed project, developed at 22cans, was designed for touchscreen play. Its campaign raised $881,571, according to GamesBeat’s 2015 report. Molyneux’s account makes the shift as much about learning how to publish and sustain a game as about designing for a different device.
What mobile changed in the development process
Touch-first play, not a smaller console game
Molyneux was interested in what touch-enabled, always-available devices could make possible. The mobile version of the challenge was not just adapting controls or screen layouts: it was exploring forms of play suited to a device people could return to throughout the day. The interview presents this as an opportunity he wanted to understand, not a formula that works for every game.

Players moved through content faster than expected
Molyneux said Godus players consumed the available content more quickly than the team had anticipated. The response was to accelerate content production. GamesBeat reported that the team had produced 35 updates by the time of the interview. That experience connected mobile development to a continuing production rhythm: the initial release was not the end of the work.
Learning the publishing work
The transition also brought publishing tasks closer to the developer. Molyneux spoke about learning publishing himself while 22cans explored a multiplatform business. In his telling, moving to mobile meant taking on unfamiliar work around reaching and serving players, alongside the creative challenge of designing the game.

What he learned from Godus’s monetization experiments
Molyneux described trying several ways to make free-to-play spending feel additive and to leave players feeling good about purchases. The experiments included timed events, purchasable gifts, resource top-ups and wait times. He said events added onto the core loop distracted players, while one-off gifts worked better. Those are his judgments about Godus, not a general rule about mobile-game monetization.
He also acknowledged that he could have monetized Godus differently and that the process exposed mistakes. The account is useful precisely because it describes tradeoffs and learning in progress; it does not establish that a particular purchase mechanic is effective or ethically sound in every game.

How to read the interview’s performance claims
GamesBeat reported Molyneux’s claims that Godus had 190,000 five-star reviews, ranked number one in 54 countries and generated “tens of millions of dollars” in revenue. These are figures he gave in the 2015 interview, not current performance metrics or independently verified statistics. They describe what he said about the game at that time, rather than evidence of its present standing.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why this transition matters
Molyneux’s story is a case study in adaptation rather than a universal guide to moving a game between platforms. He framed the work as learning new design conditions, responding to how quickly players used content, and accepting publishing and monetization as part of the job. The central lesson in his account is that changing platforms can require changing the development practice around the game as well.

Later 2015 coverage also treated the transition as difficult: TechRadar revisited a 2014 interview about Godus and free-to-play, while PocketGamer.biz covered a 2014 talk comparing console and mobile production through Fable and Godus. Those pieces provide period context, but they do not update the figures in the GamesBeat interview.
