Nintendo’s history is not a simple slide from dominance to decline. Its fortunes have changed sharply from one generation to the next: the Wii became a major success, the Wii U sold far fewer units, and the Switch went on to become one of Nintendo’s largest platforms. Today the company competes in a wider games industry that Nintendo itself says is becoming more competitive. The clearest story is one of shifting hardware fortunes and strategic reinvention—not a verified, steady loss of market share.
What “dominance” means—and what the numbers can show
Nintendo’s console history is often told as a contest for industry dominance, but that word can mean different things: worldwide hardware sales, annual sales in a particular country, software revenue, or influence over how people play. Those measures are not interchangeable. Nintendo’s published lifetime unit totals show how many of its own systems sold worldwide; they do not establish its share of a market or how it compared with Sony, Microsoft, or Sega in the same period.
Nintendo’s official history traces its dedicated-system story to the Family Computer (Famicom), released in Japan in 1983, and continues through Switch 2. Across those generations, Nintendo’s results have varied rather than followed a single downward path. Nintendo’s history provides the company’s overview of that evolution.
Generations with sharply different outcomes
The company’s worldwide lifetime sales figures make the variation visible. Nintendo reports the following consolidated unit totals as of June 30, 2026. These are hardware and software units sold over each system’s lifetime, not market-share figures; the totals also cover systems from different generations and should not be read as a direct head-to-head comparison.

All figures in the table are Nintendo’s worldwide consolidated lifetime unit sales, reported as of June 30, 2026. Switch 2 is a newer system than the others listed, so its cumulative total reflects a shorter time on sale, not a completed generation. Nintendo’s sales data is the source for the figures.
Wii success did not guarantee Wii U success
The Wii’s 101.63 million hardware units and the Wii U’s 13.56 million illustrate how dramatically outcomes can change between generations. The figures document different levels of Nintendo hardware sales; by themselves, they do not explain why one system sold more than another or prove that a competitor captured a particular share of the market.

Switch changed the direction of the story
With 156.59 million units, Nintendo Switch exceeded the company’s listed Wii and DS hardware totals as of June 30, 2026. That makes it a major success within Nintendo’s own history, not proof that Nintendo held a specified share of the wider games market. The company’s reported software total for Switch—1,561.95 million units—also shows the scale of software sales associated with the platform.
Competition now reaches beyond the console contest
Nintendo’s FY2025 Annual Report describes an entertainment environment in which options continue to diversify and competition is intensifying as more companies enter the games industry. That is Nintendo’s characterization of the broader environment, rather than a quantified comparison of its position against any named rival. The company states that Switch 2 launched on June 5, 2025. Nintendo’s FY2025 Annual Report sets out that view of the market.

This wider competition matters because a console business is not measured by hardware totals alone. Consumers can encounter games across different devices and services, while a platform’s prospects also depend on its software and the audience it can carry forward. The available Nintendo figures are useful for following the company’s own generations, but do not establish how Nintendo, Sony, and Microsoft ranked against each other by region, revenue, or market share.
Switch’s audience and the handoff to Switch 2
Nintendo’s February 2026 results material says relationships built with consumers through Nintendo Switch supported the smooth launch of Switch 2. That is the company’s account of the transition, not independent proof that those relationships caused the launch outcome.

Nintendo reported 129 million annual playing users for calendar year 2025, compared with 130 million for calendar year 2024. These are Nintendo’s annual playing-user figures, not counts of hardware owners, subscribers, or active users calculated under another company’s definition. The series offers a separate view of the reach Nintendo reports beyond cumulative console sales. Nintendo’s February 2026 results material presents the figures and the company’s explanation of the Switch-to-Switch-2 relationship.

The available figures support a story of changing platform fortunes: Nintendo’s listed systems range from the Wii U’s 13.56 million lifetime hardware units to Switch’s 156.59 million, while Switch 2 represents the company’s current generation and is still accumulating sales. They do not support a continuous, quantified fall from a historical peak in market dominance. Establishing that would require comparable market-share data with a defined geography, time period, and measure, including figures for competing platforms.

- One player can use a Joy-Con in each hand
- Two players can each take one
- Multiple Joy-Con can be employed by numerous people for a variety of gameplay options (additional Joy-Con sold separately)
- Slip a set of Joy-Con into a Joy-Con grip accessory, mirroring a more traditional controller. Or, select an optional Nintendo Switch Pro Controller.
What Nintendo does say is that competition is intensifying, and that the consumer relationships developed around Switch helped support Switch 2’s launch. Together, those points frame the current challenge: keeping an audience across generations while competing in an entertainment landscape with more entrants and more ways to play.
