Offworld Industries co-founder Alastair “Chuc” Sew Hoy says a Starship Troopers-inspired mod made by a former developer was released to the Squad community, where it became a practical experiment: could Squad’s framework support a cooperative horde shooter? The team later used footage and ideas from that mod in a pitch to Sony Pictures. Offworld’s licensed game grew from that experiment, but it is a separate work.
From Project Reality to Squad
Offworld’s account of its beginnings starts with Project Reality, a Battlefield 2 modification made by developers who later formed the studio. Its company history describes Squad as the commercial game inspired by that mod. In a 2024 interview with MobileSyrup, Sew Hoy recalled the team as amateur modders who wanted to remake Battlefield according to their own vision.

That background gave the team experience with the tactical-shooter design problems it wanted to solve. “We knew the tactical shooter market quite well by the time we started because of our previous experience working on Project Reality mod for Battlefield 2, and it allowed us to really drive straight to the core of the team play experience we wanted to deliver,” Sew Hoy told MobileSyrup.
Offworld’s own history says Squad developed from a prototype into a larger effort through community-building and crowdfunding. The company presents player competition, cooperation and communication as central to its identity; those are the studio’s descriptions of its approach, rather than an independent assessment.

How a Squad mod informed a different game
Sew Hoy says a former developer created a Starship Troopers-inspired mod for Squad and released it publicly. It attracted attention and let the team explore whether the Squad framework could work for a cooperative, player-versus-environment horde shooter. He described the project as “another adventurous gamble in us trying to apply what we learned on Squad and apply it to a PvE-style horde shooter.”
According to Sew Hoy, Offworld assembled footage and ideas from the mod for pitch meetings with Sony Pictures. In May 2023, Offworld announced its collaboration with Sony Pictures Consumer Products on Starship Troopers: Extermination. The mod was useful as a prototype and pitch input; that connection does not make it the licensed game.

The mod and Extermination are separate works
Offworld’s FAQ is explicit: “Starship Troopers: Extermination is not a Squad mod.” The mod was a community-developed project, while Extermination is Offworld’s separately developed game made in collaboration with Sony Pictures Consumer Products. The distinction matters both for authorship and for what each game is designed to do.

What the transition says about Offworld
The path from Project Reality to Squad and then to Extermination shows continuity in the people and their interest in multiplayer teamwork, alongside a change in format. Squad carried forward the team’s tactical-shooter experience. The Starship Troopers project tested how some of that experience might translate to cooperative PvE, using a community mod as a proving ground before the separate licensed game.
CEO Vlad Ceraldi summed up the studio’s stated orientation in the 2024 interview: “We are a community-driven company.” He said player communication and information about game activity help inform future development. That perspective echoes the role of modding and community experimentation in the studio’s origin story, while the commercial and licensed projects remain distinct from the community work that preceded them.

What the launch record establishes
Offworld’s official history dates Extermination’s Early Access launch to 2023. Its May 2023 announcement named May 17 as the planned launch date and listed US$24.99 as the introductory Early Access price. These are historical launch details, not current availability or pricing. The same announcement said Squad had sold “well over three million copies”; that was Offworld’s company-reported figure in 2023, not an independently audited or current sales total.
For the studio’s longer timeline, the 2024 MobileSyrup interview described Offworld as ten years old at that time. That is the interview’s framing in 2024, not a present-day age calculation.
