This list weighs historical influence, quality and critical recognition, how clearly each game represents its console, and how practical it is to play today. It covers the five numbered home consoles, from the original PlayStation to PS5.
The picks are Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 2 for PS1, God of War for PS2, The Last of Us for PS3, The Last of Us Part II for PS4, and Astro Bot for PS5. They make a case for each generation in a different way: defining a genre, launching a lasting series, setting a narrative benchmark, refining cinematic action, and showcasing a console’s distinctive hardware.
Best PlayStation games by generation at a glance
| Generation | Pick | Why it represents the console |
|---|---|---|
| PS1 | Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 2 | A highly acclaimed late-generation game that turned trick-based skateboarding into a precise, replayable video-game language. |
| PS2 | God of War (2005) | The original Kratos adventure launched one of PlayStation’s defining franchises on PS2. |
| PS3 | The Last of Us | A PS3 debut that made character-driven survival action a signature PlayStation experience. |
| PS4 | The Last of Us Part II | A defining PS4 exclusive whose scale and cinematic action exemplify the generation’s blockbuster style. |
| PS5 | Astro Bot | A joyful platform game that puts PlayStation’s hardware and history at the center of its appeal. |
These are representative picks, not claims that other candidates are unworthy. The PS5 selection is especially time-sensitive: the generation is still active, and later releases may change which game best captures it.
What is the best PS1 game?
Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 2
Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 2 is the PS1 pick because it is both a critic-approved late-era standout and a clear example of how well the console could support a fast, skill-based 3D game. Metacritic lists it at 98 in its combined platform ranking; that score is useful evidence of critical reception, not a complete measure of its cultural impact or a universal ruling on the best PS1 game.

The game’s appeal is unusually easy to explain: link tricks, manage a short run, and keep improving your route and score. That compact loop made it a natural fit for repeated play and helped make skateboarding games a major part of the PlayStation-era landscape. Its selection reflects that mix of execution, recognition, and generational character.
Why not Tekken 3?
Tekken 3 is an equally serious alternative for readers who value fighting games and the PS1’s expanding 3D genre range. Metacritic lists it at 96 in the same combined platform ranking. The two scores are strong signals, but they cannot settle a choice between a landmark fighter and a defining skateboarding game; this list favors the latter for its distinctive gameplay loop and broad replay appeal.
What is the best PS2 game?
God of War (2005)
The original God of War is the PS2 choice because its platform history is unusually clear: PlayStation says Kratos first appeared on PS2 in 2005. The game introduced a mythic action series that would continue across multiple generations, making it a strong marker of the console’s blockbuster identity.
This is a representative pick, not a claim that the franchise’s first entry is objectively better than every other PS2 classic. PlayStation’s chronology establishes where the series began; it does not establish a single greatest game for the console. The case for this entry is that it pairs a generation-specific origin with a legacy that remained central to PlayStation long after the PS2 era.

What is the best PS3 game?
The Last of Us
The Last of Us gets the PS3 selection because it debuted on the console and became a defining example of its character-focused action adventures. Its survival setting gives the action an intimate scale, while the relationship at the center of the story gives the journey its emotional weight. Sony’s franchise history confirms the PS3 debut.
There is a strong case for other kinds of PS3 landmark. Metacritic lists Grand Theft Auto IV at 98 and identifies it as its 2008 PS3 Game of the Year. That makes it an excellent alternative for players who associate the generation with open-world crime drama. The choice here favors The Last of Us as a more distinct PlayStation identity: a first-party series that began on PS3 and continued to shape the brand on later consoles.
What is the best PS4 game?
The Last of Us Part II
The Last of Us Part II is the PS4 pick for its combination of cinematic presentation, intense action, and an ambitious continuation of a series that began on PS3. Sony’s 2020 backward-compatibility FAQ names it among the critically acclaimed PlayStation exclusives that helped define PS4. That is useful official framing, though it is not an impartial comparative ranking.
Ghost of Tsushima is another strong contender: Sony’s same FAQ also identifies it as a critically acclaimed PS4 exclusive. The choice between them depends partly on what “greatest” means to a player. This list gives the edge to Part II for its connection to a cross-generation PlayStation series and its focused, character-led approach to blockbuster action.

What is the best PS5 game?
Astro Bot
Astro Bot is the PS5 choice because it makes a persuasive case for the console through the feel of play: a polished platform adventure built around inventive movement, tactile feedback, and a celebration of PlayStation’s history. A 2026 TechRadar roundup recommends it alongside Elden Ring and God of War Ragnarök; PlayStation’s own PS5 history also highlights a broader field that includes Astro’s Playroom, Elden Ring, Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, and Baldur’s Gate 3.
The alternatives make clear why a PS5 winner is particularly debatable. Elden Ring and Baldur’s Gate 3 represent large third-party role-playing games; Spider-Man 2 and God of War Ragnarök offer cinematic action; Astro Bot is a first-party platform showcase. This list favors the game that most directly expresses PlayStation’s playful hardware identity rather than the one with the broadest role-playing world or biggest action spectacle.
Astro’s Playroom deserves a separate mention: PlayStation says it was pre-installed on every PS5, making it an unusually accessible introduction to the console’s DualSense controller. It is a hardware showcase; the choice of Astro Bot as the generation’s greatest is an editorial judgment, not an official PlayStation ranking.

Some of PlayStation’s strongest franchises are useful guideposts across console eras. Sony’s franchise history traces God of War from its PS2 beginning to its PS4 and PS5 entries; The Last of Us from its PS3 debut to Part II on PS4 and a rebuilt Part I on PS5; and Uncharted from its PS3 start through PS4, with remastered titles on PS5. Those later releases can make an older series easier to revisit, but a remaster or remake does not change which generation hosted the original release.

Can you play these older games on PS5?
Compatibility depends on the specific title and edition. In an October 2020 FAQ, Sony said more than 99% of PS4 games would be playable on PS5 at launch. The same FAQ notes that a disc-based PS4 upgrade requires a PS5 with an Ultra HD Blu-ray drive, and that save transfer varies by game. This is a dated statement about PS4-to-PS5 compatibility; it is not evidence that PS1, PS2, or PS3 discs work on PS5.
Before buying an older-generation game to play on a current console, check its current PlayStation Store listing and the platform or edition shown for the copy you plan to use. A PS5 remaster, a PS4 release playable through backward compatibility, and an original PS3 disc are different versions with different requirements.
PlayStation’s scale—and what it does not tell you
Sony Interactive Entertainment reported more than 95 million PS5 units sold-in worldwide as of June 30, 2026, and more than 1.706 billion software units sold across PS4 and PS5 as of the same date. Separately, Sony reported more than 51 billion hours of annual gameplay as of March 31, 2025. These figures show the scale of PlayStation’s platform and engagement, not the quality or popularity of any individual game.
For PS5 games in particular, hardware is also part of the platform’s identity. PlayStation highlights the DualSense’s haptic feedback and adaptive triggers, features that can make compatible games feel more responsive and tactile. Their presence helps explain why a hands-on platform showcase can represent a generation as effectively as a technically ambitious blockbuster.
