FTB Skies 2 is a progression-focused skyblock modpack for Minecraft 1.21.1 running on NeoForge. Its current CurseForge release is 1.24.0, updated October 12, 2026. You build on a floating island, follow more than 1,000 quests, and develop through three complementary resource paths: Crystalmancy, Cultivation, and Prospecting. The official baseline is 6 GB of RAM, 8 GB recommended, and Java 21. For multiplayer, the official Server Installer creates a matching server on Windows or Linux; self-hosting provides control, while managed hosting trades administration work for a recurring fee.
What FTB Skies 2 is
FTB Skies 2 is Feed The Beast’s next-generation skyblock experience. It starts you on a floating island rather than in a conventional Overworld and turns progression into the central game loop. The pack combines automation, exploration, magic, combat, farming, resource processing, and quest objectives instead of asking you to follow one fixed technology tree.

It is presented as a kitchen-sink-style pack rather than an expert pack. That does not make the playthrough directionless: recipes, machines, dimensions, gear, and quest milestones still reward planning. You can pursue one production method first, establish a reliable base, and add other systems when your infrastructure can support them.

The Feed The Beast listing was showing 1.23.0 when it was captured, while the newer CurseForge project listing showed 1.24.0. Treat the release number on the page you are using as authoritative on the day you install, and make sure every player and the server use that exact pack release. A world created on one release may not behave identically after an update, so make a backup before changing versions.
There is no published, stable FPS benchmark, maximum player count, or guaranteed server tick rate for this pack. Your results depend on the computer, graphics settings, world activity, automation load, and number of players. The RAM figures below are requirements, not a promise of a particular frame rate or tick time.
The three FTB Skies 2 progression paths
The paths provide different ways to solve the same broad problem: turning a small skyblock start into a dependable supply of materials. They are balanced and complementary. Choose one as your initial focus, then borrow machines, crops, bees, or crystal systems from the others as your needs change.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Path of Crystalmancy: crystals and synthesis
Crystalmancy centers on budding geodes, crystal transformation, and arcane material synthesis. Its listed components include FTB Ez Crystals, GeOre Nouveau, and Productive Metalworks. This route suits a player who enjoys discovering material conversions, arranging a controlled production chain, and turning unusual resources into useful components.
Plan for dedicated space for geodes and processing rather than scattering every block around the starting island. Keep inputs, transformed crystals, and final products separated with clearly labeled storage. That layout makes it easier to see which ingredient is actually limiting a recipe and leaves room for later automation.
Path of Cultivation: farming and biological automation
Cultivation focuses on sustainable agriculture and biological production through Mystical Agriculture, Productive Bees, and Fishing Overhaul. It is a natural starting point for players who prefer renewable supplies, breeding or tending production systems, and building a base that grows over time.
Reserve open, well-organized areas for crops, bee infrastructure, and fishing-related production. Renewable systems can generate a large number of item types, so storage planning matters as much here as the farms themselves. Automate the repetitive parts only after you know which outputs your quests and machines consume most often.
Rank #2
- ULTIMATE COLLECTION — Includes Minecraft: Java & Bedrock Edition, five Bedrock add-ons, five exclusive Character Creator items, and 1000 Minecoins.
- CREATE YOUR WORLD — Build whatever you imagine in an infinite world that’s unique in every playthrough.
- EXPLORE AND CRAFT — Discover biomes, resources, and mobs, then craft your way through a sandbox world filled with surprises.

Path of Prospecting: mechanical processing
Prospecting uses Create and Create: Sifting contraptions to process raw materials and uncover resources. It is the best fit for players who enjoy visible machinery, rotational power, belts, funnels, and multi-stage processing lines.
Build this path with expansion in mind. Mechanical systems need room for shafts, power components, input buffers, and output handling. A compact temporary machine can help you reach the next milestone, but a little extra floor space early on prevents a full rebuild when several processing chains must run at once.
How to combine the paths
You do not have to complete one path before touching another. Prospecting can supply raw materials for Crystalmancy; Cultivation can provide renewable ingredients and resources that keep both systems running. Conversely, crystal and mechanical processing can reduce the time required to expand farms and biological production.
- Choose Crystalmancy first if material transformation and arcane production are the part you most want to learn.
- Choose Cultivation first if renewable resources and biological automation sound more appealing than machinery.
- Choose Prospecting first if building and tuning Create contraptions is your main reason to play.
- Add a second path when your first one has reliable inputs, storage, and power or processing capacity.
What is included beyond the three paths
Quests and rewards
The pack contains more than 1,000 custom quests. They include ordinary turn-ins as well as exploration, observation, challenge, and boss objectives. This variety matters in a skyblock world: the quest book can send you away from the main production loop when you need a reason to explore or test a new system.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
A quest reward shop lets you select rewards that fit your build. Use it to cover a bottleneck rather than automatically taking the first item offered. A reward that saves a difficult early recipe or fills a missing infrastructure slot can be more valuable than a duplicate component you can already produce.
Floating islands, biomes, and discoveries
World generation adds custom floating-island biomes, dungeons, secrets, and more than half a dozen starting-island styles. The starting style changes the character of the opening without changing the basic need to secure resources and expand carefully. Exploration is part of progression, not merely decoration, because quests include discovery goals and the world contains dungeons and hidden areas.
Expanded vanilla systems
Several familiar mechanics are reworked or integrated with the pack. The feature list includes enhanced villager trading, Piglin bartering, wandering trades, mob farms, Happy Ghast mounts, enchanting allays, and related integrations. These systems give you alternatives to direct mining or machine production and can become important when a particular resource is scarce.
Rank #3
- CREATE YOUR WORLD — Build whatever you imagine in an infinite world that is unique in every playthrough.
- EXPLORE AND CRAFT — Discover biomes, resources, and mobs, then craft your way through a sandbox world full of surprises.
- SURVIVAL ADVENTURES — Face mysterious foes, travel across varied landscapes, and venture into perilous dimensions.
- PLAY TOGETHER — Play solo or join friends in local split-screen and cross-platform play across console, mobile, and PC. Online multiplayer supports up to 8 players.
- COMMUNITY PLAY — Connect with players on community servers, or subscribe to Realms Plus (sold separately) to play with up to 10 friends on a private server.
Character growth, equipment, and combat
Character development comes from Pufferfish’s Skills, Apothic Attributes, Relics, Curios, Jewelry from Iron’s Gems ’n Jewelry, and Apothic Enchanting. These systems let progression continue through more than machine tiers: equipment, accessories, attributes, and enchantments all contribute to survivability and specialization.
Magic and combat options include Ars Nouveau, Malum, Iron’s Spells ’n Spellbooks, Roots 4, Industrial Foregoing, and Mekanism Unleashed. You can therefore build a play style around spells and relics, conventional weapons and attributes, or a mixture of combat and automation. Boss goals in the quest book provide a reason to develop that gear instead of treating it as optional decoration.
Technology, storage, and automation
The technology selection spans Create, Mekanism, Industrial Foregoing, Oritech, Modern Industrialization, Refined Storage 2, Applied Energistics 2, Mekanism QIO, and Sophisticated Storage. These options overlap in useful ways but are not identical. Create emphasizes physical processing, while digital storage and logistics systems reduce the work of moving and finding large inventories. Mekanism and other industrial systems provide additional routes for processing and automation.
Do not install every storage or machinery system at once. Pick one inventory-management approach that matches your current scale, then add another when a specific recipe or automation goal justifies the complexity. A simple, labeled storage room is easier to maintain than several half-configured networks.
The reworked FTB Pyramid
The reworked FTB Pyramid is the pack’s final high-difficulty challenge. Treat it as a late-game objective: establish resource generation, equipment, storage, and backup supplies before attempting it. The exact difficulty is not expressed as a guaranteed time or power requirement, so prepare for a substantial endgame test rather than planning around a published completion estimate.
Recommended Free Tools
How much RAM and which Java version FTB Skies 2 needs
| Requirement | Official figure or guidance | How to use it |
|---|---|---|
| RAM minimum | At least 6 GB | Use only if the rest of the computer has enough memory for the operating system and background applications. |
| RAM recommended | 8 GB | Use this as the starting allocation when the computer has sufficient total memory. |
| Java | Java 21 | Confirm the instance and server use Java 21 rather than an older Java runtime. |
Allocating more memory than the pack needs is not automatically better. Leave headroom for the operating system, the launcher, voice chat, browsers, and other applications. If the game stutters, crashes, or pauses during heavy loading, first check the actual memory pressure and logs instead of blindly increasing the allocation. The official figures establish a baseline, not a universal performance setting.
Install the client with the FTB App
The FTB App can browse and install FTB and CurseForge packs, update instances, change Java versions, set RAM and JVM arguments, customize packs, and share instances. It is the most direct route when you want the launcher to manage the pack files and settings.
Rank #4
- Skins! We have biome settlers, city folk, town folk, and more!
- The Nether and all its inhabitants. Fight Ghasts and make friends with Pigmen
- Cross platform play for up to five players between Pocket Edition and Windows 10
- Revamped touch controls, controller support, and a controller mapping screen
- Enhanced Weather effects! Accumulating snow and more
- Install or update the FTB App.
- Search for FTB Skies 2 in the app and select the current Minecraft 1.21.1 NeoForge release.
- Set the instance to at least the 6 GB baseline. If the computer has enough total memory, begin with the 8 GB recommendation.
- Open the instance’s Java settings and confirm that it uses Java 21.
- Leave memory for the operating system and other programs, then launch the instance once to allow files and libraries to finish installing.
- Before inviting friends, record the exact pack release shown in the instance so everyone can install the same release.
The CurseForge project page is useful for checking the current release listing, while the FTB App handles the practical instance setup described above. Avoid mixing files from different releases or loaders. A client on Minecraft 1.21.1 with NeoForge must match the server’s Minecraft version, NeoForge setup, and FTB Skies 2 release.
Set up an FTB Skies 2 server with the official Server Installer
Feed The Beast provides a Server Installer for its modpacks. The installer downloads and extracts the files for the operating system and exact pack version you select. Its filename identifies the pack and version, so do not rename it.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Prepare the server files
- Open the FTB server-files browser.
- Select the operating system and the exact FTB Skies 2 version that your players will use.
- Download the generated Server Installer into the folder where you want the server to live.
- Keep the downloaded filename unchanged; the name identifies the selected pack and version.
- Run the installer and answer its prompts. It downloads and extracts the required server files.
The installer downloads the correct Java version for its workflow, so you do not need to install Java separately just to run the installer. The server still needs a suitable memory budget once it is running; start with the pack’s 6 GB minimum and 8 GB recommendation, then monitor actual use.
Windows startup
- Place the downloaded executable in the intended server folder.
- Double-click the installer and answer the prompts.
- After extraction completes, start the server with the generated
run.bat. - Keep the server window available while testing so you can read startup errors and shutdown messages.
Linux startup
- Place the installer in the server directory.
- Make it executable with
chmod +x serverinstaller_{id}_{versionid}. - Run it with
./serverinstaller_{id}_{versionid}and answer the prompts. - Start the installed server with the generated
run.sh.
The brace-wrapped parts in the Linux command represent the filename supplied by the installer. Use the actual downloaded name, including its pack and version identifiers, rather than typing the braces literally.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Make the server reachable for friends
Self-hosting requires more than launching the script. The owner is responsible for the server machine, firewall and port-forwarding configuration, backups, updates, JVM arguments, and troubleshooting. Configure network access according to your router, operating system, and security policy, and do not expose administrative access unnecessarily.
Before inviting anyone, complete a local test: start the server, wait for its normal ready state, connect from a client with the identical pack release, and shut it down cleanly. Create a world backup before changing mods or versions. Keep regular backups somewhere separate from the live server folder so a disk failure or bad update does not destroy both copies.
There is no official maximum-player or guaranteed-tick-rate figure. Increase the number of players gradually while watching memory use, startup time, and whether automation causes delayed block updates. A server that works for two players may need a different memory allocation or more careful automation for a larger group.

Self-hosting versus managed hosting
| Consideration | Self-hosted server | Managed hosting |
|---|---|---|
| Control | Direct control of files, backups, JVM arguments, and network configuration. | Control is mediated by the provider’s panel, limits, and policies. |
| Maintenance | You handle updates, firewall and port forwarding, backups, and troubleshooting. | The provider reduces routine machine administration, but you still manage the pack, world, and settings. |
| Cost | No hosting subscription, although your own hardware, electricity, and network have costs. | Recurring cost; pricing and resource limits vary by provider, location, and plan. |
| Best fit | Someone comfortable administering a computer and network. | A group that wants a simpler setup and does not want to maintain a server machine. |
Feed The Beast names BisectHosting as a hosting partner. If you choose a managed service, confirm current pricing, region availability, backup policy, support for the exact FTB Skies 2 release, and the provider’s memory and storage limits before paying. Those commercial details can change and are not established by the pack’s technical requirements.
If you want a managed option for a modded Minecraft server, Godlike.Host’s modded Minecraft hosting offers one-click modpacks from CurseForge, FTB, Technic, and ATLauncher on Forge, Fabric, or NeoForge, plus upload of custom server packs and SFTP access. It also includes up to three free backups a day with restore, which suits the back-up-before-updating routine described above; see the current plans for resources and locations.
Version discipline for multiplayer
Most avoidable connection failures come from mismatched versions. Record these three values before troubleshooting anything else:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches- Minecraft version: 1.21.1.
- Mod loader: NeoForge.
- FTB Skies 2 release: the same release selected by the server installer and every client.
Do not copy a client’s mods folder over a server installation or add individual mods to one side without understanding the pack’s dependencies. Update the server and clients as a coordinated change, back up the world first, and test the updated instance before making it the group’s permanent version.
Troubleshooting checklist
The launcher reports the wrong Java version
Open the instance’s Java settings in the FTB App and select Java 21. For a server, use the Java supplied by the Server Installer workflow or confirm that the startup script is invoking the intended runtime. Restart after changing the setting.
The game crashes during startup
- Check that the instance is Minecraft 1.21.1 on NeoForge.
- Verify that the selected FTB Skies 2 release matches the one you intended to install.
- Confirm that the memory allocation is not below the 6 GB baseline.
- Close other memory-heavy applications and try again.
- If the problem began after an update, restore the backup or recreate a clean instance at the previous known-good release.
A player cannot join the server
- Compare the client and server Minecraft, NeoForge, and FTB Skies 2 release values.
- Make sure the server has completed startup rather than still downloading or generating files.
- Check the host machine’s firewall and router configuration.
- Read the server log for the exact rejection message instead of guessing at a port or mod change.
The server feels slow after adding automation
There is no published tick-rate guarantee, so diagnose the actual world. Temporarily stop the newest large machine network, mob farm, or item-processing chain and compare behavior. Check memory use, reduce unnecessary always-on systems, and spread heavy automation across a planned layout. If the machine remains saturated, move the server to hardware with more available resources or use a managed host with a suitable allocation.
The installer does not run on Linux
Confirm that you are in the server directory, that the downloaded filename is unchanged, and that you ran chmod +x on the actual installer name. Then execute it with the ./ prefix. If the installer still fails, keep its error output and compare the selected operating system and pack version with the file you downloaded.
Which setup is right for you?
- Solo player: use the FTB App, start with the recommended memory allocation if your computer allows it, and choose the path that matches your preferred activity.
- Small group with a spare computer: use the Server Installer and self-host when you are comfortable handling backups, network access, and updates.
- Group without an administrator: consider managed hosting after checking its current support for the exact pack release and its resource limits.
- Returning players updating an existing world: back up first, verify the release number on both sides, and test the update before inviting the whole group.
FTB Skies 2 works best when you treat progression and infrastructure as the same project: choose a path, leave room for the other two, organize storage early, and keep the client and server versions synchronized. That approach lets the pack’s large quest list, custom islands, combat systems, and automation options remain choices rather than sources of avoidable setup problems.
The Bottom Line
For the current release, install FTB Skies 2 on Minecraft 1.21.1 with NeoForge, Java 21, and at least 6 GB of RAM (8 GB recommended). Use the FTB App for the client, the official Server Installer for self-hosting, and keep every client and server on the same pack version.
