Key takeaways
- The full 64-bit Steam client arrived during Steam’s December 2025 update cycle for 64-bit versions of Windows 10 and Windows 11.
- Steam Client support for Windows 10 32-bit ended on January 1, 2026, including client and security updates.
- Valve says 32-bit games remain supported on 64-bit Windows.
- Windows 10 32-bit users need an operating-system migration for continued Steam updates; the evidence does not show that buying a new PC is automatically necessary.
Is Steam 64-bit now?
Yes. The full 64-bit Steam client arrived on Windows during the December 2025 update cycle, but the change applies specifically to 64-bit versions of Windows 10 and Windows 11. The architectural change gives Steam more memory-access headroom and a foundation for future client work, but available reporting does not establish a specific frame-rate, launch-time, or download-speed improvement. Windows Central’s December 21, 2025 report describes the completed transition.

Does Steam still work on 32-bit Windows?
Windows 10 32-bit installations may continue running for a short time, but Steam Client support ended on January 1, 2026. Unsupported installations no longer receive Steam client updates, including security updates, and Valve does not guarantee that Steam will continue functioning indefinitely.

Valve announced the deadline on October 2, 2025. The official announcement said: “The Steam client will continue running on Windows 10 64-bit and 32-bit games will continue to be supported.” Valve’s official Steam announcement provides the original support position, while Steam Support’s Windows 32-bit documentation explains the post-deadline limitations.
What is the difference between 32-bit and 64-bit Windows for Steam?
The practical difference is Steam client eligibility, not an automatic change to every game in a library. A 64-bit Windows installation can run the fully 64-bit Steam client and can continue supporting 32-bit games. A 32-bit Windows 10 installation is unsupported for Steam client updates after January 1, 2026.
| Windows installation | Steam client updates | Security updates | 32-bit game support | Required action |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Windows 10 32-bit | No longer eligible after January 1, 2026 | No longer provided through Steam client support | Not a supported long-term Steam configuration | Migrate to 64-bit Windows if continued updates and support are required |
| Windows 10 64-bit | Supported | Supported through the Steam client | Supported | No special Steam migration is indicated by the researched sources |
| Windows 11 64-bit | Supported | Supported through the Steam client | Supported | No special Steam migration is indicated by the researched sources |
Will 32-bit Steam games still run?
Yes, 32-bit games remain supported on 64-bit Windows. Moving the Steam client to 64-bit does not mean that every game must also be 64-bit. Valve’s announcement specifically preserves support for 32-bit games on 64-bit Windows, so a compatible older game can remain playable after the client transition.
That statement applies to the relationship between the Steam client and Windows architecture. Individual games can still have separate compatibility, operating-system, launcher, or developer-support requirements.
Do I need Windows 11 for the new Steam client?
No. The fully 64-bit Steam client supports 64-bit Windows 10 as well as Windows 11. Windows 10 64-bit users do not need to move to Windows 11 solely because Steam completed its 64-bit client transition.

The important distinction is Windows architecture: Windows 10 64-bit remains supported, while Windows 10 32-bit is outside Steam client support. Whether a particular PC can install Windows 11 is a separate hardware and eligibility question not established by this Steam change.
How do I check whether my Windows installation is 32-bit or 64-bit?
Use either of these built-in Windows checks:
- Open Settings, choose System, then open About.
- Find System type under the device specifications. The entry identifies whether Windows is 32-bit or 64-bit.
You can also open System Information from the Windows search box and inspect System Type. The wording may vary slightly by Windows version, but the result should identify the installed operating-system architecture.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsWhat should Windows 10 32-bit users do?
Windows 10 32-bit users should plan an operating-system migration to 64-bit Windows if they want ongoing Steam client updates and support. The researched evidence does not establish that a new computer is required. Hardware eligibility must be assessed separately before deciding whether the existing PC can run a 64-bit Windows installation.
A migration can involve backing up personal files, checking hardware and driver compatibility, confirming a valid Windows activation path, and choosing an appropriate installation method. Those steps are Windows migration decisions rather than requirements created by Steam itself. Do not assume that installing a different Steam version alone will restore supported updates on 32-bit Windows.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Do I need to buy a new PC because Steam went 64-bit?
No. Steam’s move to a 64-bit Windows client does not by itself prove that users need new PC hardware. Users on 64-bit Windows 10 or Windows 11 can continue using the supported client, and users on 32-bit Windows need to investigate a 64-bit operating-system migration before considering hardware replacement.

It also shows a similar 2% performance advantage on average across over 9,000 reported Passmark benchmarks.Ê Unlike the 285K, the 270K Plus features a newer and more efficient die architecture, as well as faster internal boost clocks for its E-Cores. A new PC may become relevant if the existing hardware cannot support a suitable 64-bit Windows installation, lacks compatible drivers, or fails other operating-system requirements. The dossier does not provide hardware requirements that would justify treating a purchase as universally necessary.
What changed technically?
The December 2025 update completed Steam’s transition to a fully 64-bit Windows client on supported 64-bit Windows installations. A 64-bit application has more address space available than a 32-bit application, which can provide additional headroom for memory-intensive client work. The available sources describe this as a foundation for future development, not as a measured gaming-performance upgrade.
Steam’s 64-bit client should therefore be understood as a compatibility and platform-architecture change. It is not evidence of a guaranteed increase in game frame rates, faster downloads, faster launches, or better performance on every computer.
The Bottom Line
Steam is now fully 64-bit on 64-bit Windows 10 and Windows 11. If Windows is already 64-bit, no special Steam migration is indicated. If Windows 10 is 32-bit, Steam may run temporarily but no longer receives client or security updates after January 1, 2026; migrate to 64-bit Windows after checking whether the existing hardware supports it.
