Fuse is a free emulator for the Sinclair ZX Spectrum family and related machines. It can load common Spectrum snapshots, tapes and disk images, but the exact build, supported features and installation steps depend on your operating system and package source. Use the official Fuse project page to choose a platform-specific download.

What is Fuse?

Fuse stands for Free Unix Spectrum Emulator. Despite the name, the project lists ports or packages for Windows, macOS, Linux and other Unix-like systems, as well as some legacy platforms. It is free software under the GNU General Public License, version 2 or later. The project’s current download options are the best place to check which build is available for your system.

Which ZX Spectrum models does Fuse emulate?

The project lists emulation for the 16K, 48K (including NTSC), 128K, +2, +2A and +3 models, along with variants and clones such as TC/TS machines, Pentagon and Scorpion. The available machine options and behavior can vary with the particular build.

Which Fuse version is available for my operating system?

Release announcements and operating-system packages do not always refer to the same version. Fuse 1.9.2 was announced on 29 August 2026, while the project page also identifies Fuse 1.10.0 source code and lists package versions that differ by distribution and release channel. For example, the project’s package snapshot lists Debian stable and oldstable at 1.6.0+dfsg1-2 and testing/unstable at 1.9.2+dfsg-1; Fedora 44 at 1.6.0-14 and Fedora 45 and Rawhide at 1.6.0-16; and FreeBSD ports at 1.9.2. These are project-page listings, not a guarantee that a configured repository currently offers those versions. Check the project’s download and package information for your platform.

#1 Best Overall
ZX Spectrum Handheld
  • 25 built-in Spectrum games
  • A classic design, reimagined in clamshell form
  • MicroSD slot for endless gaming
  • 800x480 IPS high resolution screen
  • Themed rubber key funtion buttons, Stereo speakers and headphone jack

The 1.9.2 release notes describe separate MIC and speaker paths, improved speaker-response modeling with automatic selection by emulated machine, fixes for snapshot peripherals and Multiface reset behavior, more accurate tape traps, display-rendering work and expanded tests. These notes describe that release; they do not establish which features are present in every platform package.

Can Fuse load TAP or TZX files?

Yes. The Debian unstable manual documents support for PZX, TAP and TZX virtual-tape files. Fuse can also load Z80, SNA and SZX snapshots, and save SZX, Z80 and SNA snapshots plus TZX and TAP tape files. SLT support is partial and is sufficient for multi-load games; the older DAT-file variant is not supported.

Disk images supported by the manual include DSK, UDI, FDI, TD0, MGT, IMG, D40, D80, SAD, TRD, SCL and OPD, provided the emulated machine has an appropriate disk interface. Fuse also supports DCK cartridges for Timex 2068 variants, Interface II ROM cartridges and RZX input recordings. File compatibility therefore depends not just on the extension but sometimes on the selected machine and its emulated hardware. For the documented formats and qualifications, see the Debian unstable Fuse manual.

Why is a tape loader failing in Fuse?

Fuse’s tape-loader detection and acceleration can make loading less hands-on and faster, but the Debian manual warns that acceleration can cause some loaders to fail. If a game or program stalls or behaves incorrectly during loading, turn off tape acceleration in the emulator’s settings and try again at normal speed. The exact menu label or path may differ between platform builds.

How does Fuse handle RZX recordings?

RZX files record input for an emulated session. The manual describes a competition mode that stops a recording if the user attempts certain actions unavailable on real hardware, or if emulation speed moves more than 5% above or below normal. It also cautions that an RZX signature alone does not prove that competition-mode restrictions were followed. Treat the format as a recording, not as independent verification that a run met competition rules.

Can I use a keyboard, joystick or other peripherals?

Fuse offers configurable input and emulates Kempston joystick alongside a range of interfaces and peripherals. The project also explicitly lists support for the Recreated ZX Spectrum Bluetooth keyboard. That keyboard is an optional accessory, not a requirement: it is possible to use Fuse without buying it. Check the project feature list and the documentation for your build when configuring a particular peripheral.

What do I need to install or build Fuse?

The project provides platform packages as well as source code. For a source build, the project lists libspectrum as a requirement and X, SDL/SDL2 or framebuffer support; GTK can provide a richer interface under X. Some capabilities depend on optional libraries, so source-build requirements may vary with the features and interface you want. Most users should start with the package or download offered for their operating system rather than assume every platform has an identical build.
