Future Trash announced a $5 million seed round in September 2024, led by TIRTA and General Catalyst, to build its original FOAD franchise inside Fortnite with Unreal Editor for Fortnite (UEFN). The studio had started with a standalone Unreal Engine 5 game, then shifted toward Fortnite experiences to find an audience and iterate faster. Epic’s August 2026 account traces that strategy through licensed projects and Droid Tycoon, which Epic says FOAD now independently publishes and operates.
What Future Trash raised money to build
GamesBeat reported on September 30, 2024, that Future Trash had raised $5 million in seed financing led by TIRTA and General Catalyst. The stated goal was to develop and launch FOAD as a UGC-native franchise on Fortnite through UEFN. The announcement did not disclose a company valuation, revenue, profitability, or other financing terms.
FOAD stands for Fully Operational Annihilation Devices. Future Trash describes it as its flagship intellectual property: a world of anthropomorphic explosive characters that began as a standalone Unreal Engine 5 game. The FOAD profile describes the project and the studio’s shift toward Fortnite: About FOAD.
Why the studio pivoted from a standalone game
Future Trash was founded in 2022 by Kevin Marciano, Nate Reese, Scott Ulliman, and Eric Leino, according to Epic. The team struggled to find an audience for its original standalone game. After Epic announced UEFN at the 2023 Game Developers Conference, the studio began prototyping and releasing Fortnite experiences instead.

That pivot put the team’s work inside a platform with an existing audience and a creator ecosystem. Epic describes the approach as enabling faster iteration and audience discovery. Those are reported benefits of Future Trash’s experience, not a guarantee that UEFN will produce the same outcome for other developers.
Marciano told GamesBeat: “Creating a standalone game is really a blank canvas, whereas there are some limitations in UGC, but we believe limitations foster creativity.” He also described a particular challenge of building original IP inside Fortnite: “The biggest challenge of building original IP in Fortnite is educating the audience that this is a unique world within Fortnite.” The platform can lower some barriers to reaching players, but an original franchise still has to distinguish itself within the host game.
What the 2024 player and playtime figures mean
GamesBeat reported that Future Trash’s UGC games had reached 20 million unique players and one billion minutes of playtime at the time of the September 2024 funding announcement. Epic’s August 2026 retrospective gives a different time-stamped figure: by the late-2024 seed round, the studio had accumulated more than two billion total minutes across its UEFN releases. These are separately attributed company or platform-reported milestones, not independent audits; they should not be combined into one measure.
GamesBeat also reported that the studio planned to make 15 UEFN games over the following year and grow FOAD’s community on Discord, YouTube, and TikTok. That was a plan stated in 2024, not confirmation of the studio’s current release count.

Epic says it selected Future Trash in late 2025 as one of a small group of UEFN creators given early access to officially licensed Star Wars assets. The resulting experience, Droid Tycoon, became a major milestone for the studio. According to Epic, it recorded 1.5 billion minutes of playtime in its first month, was Fortnite’s second most-played game during its first weekend, and set a record for the highest concurrent players over a two-hour period for an IP experience in Fortnite history.
Epic says a team of approximately nine people built Droid Tycoon over five months. Epic later transferred publishing rights to FOAD, which now independently publishes and operates the game. These figures and descriptions are Epic-reported; they are not independent measures of revenue or profitability.

Marciano told Epic the studio had been close to running out of time: “We had a few months of runway left.” His advice to creators was: “Roll up your sleeves and start building.” Epic presents UEFN as a free download for people interested in creating Fortnite experiences.
What the funding story does—and does not—show
The round established that investors backed Future Trash’s effort to develop original IP within Fortnite, but the announced amount and player milestones do not establish the company’s valuation, investor ownership, earnings, or financial success. The story is instead a case study in a studio changing its distribution and development approach: from a standalone game that struggled to find players to a portfolio of UEFN releases, licensed collaborations, and an original franchise built within an established platform.
That approach comes with a trade-off. A studio can reach Fortnite players and build within a recognized ecosystem, but it must work within that platform’s constraints and make its own characters and worlds legible among many other experiences. For Future Trash, Epic’s account suggests that repeated UEFN releases helped the team develop an audience before its Star Wars collaboration brought unusually large scale.
