fxscfgwz.dll Errors: Repair the Microsoft Fax Component

Length10 min Posted Quest giverVGSources Team

fxscfgwz.dll is the Microsoft Fax Configuration Wizard file. If fxscfgwz.dll is missing, was not found, or could not be loaded, the problem usually involves an old Microsoft Fax component, an incomplete installation, or a legacy program copied from another Windows installation.

Start with this diagnostic checklist

Before changing system files, note:

  • Which program shows the error: Windows Fax Services, a fax application, an old installer, or unrelated software
  • When it appears: during startup, while installing Fax Services, after restoring Windows, or after an antivirus detection
  • Your Windows version: Windows 10, Windows 11, Windows Server, or Windows XP
  • Your system architecture: most modern Windows installations are 64-bit, while the commonly indexed fxscfgwz.dll build is 32-bit
  • The exact message: such as Cannot copy file fxscfgwz.dll, File fxscfgwz.dll is needed, or The code execution cannot proceed because fxscfgwz.dll was not found
  • The requested path: especially if Windows asks for an installation CD or an i386 folder

The correct fix depends heavily on that context. fxscfgwz.dll is associated with Microsoft Fax Server and Windows XP Fax Services, not with Visual C++, DirectX, .NET, or a general Windows runtime.

Public file metadata commonly identifies the file as a 32-bit Microsoft file, version 5.2.1776.0, with a size of about 0.11 MB. Those values describe a commonly indexed legacy build, not a guarantee that the same file belongs in every current Windows installation.

Fix 1: Reinstall the fax component from matching installation media

This is the most important fix when the message appears while installing Windows XP Fax Services or when the wizard says it cannot copy the file.

  • COMPATIBILITY: Drivers available for Windows, Windows Server, macOS (10.9 to 12.x) and Linux (kernel 3.16 and up); Windows Drivers available for download

On Windows XP

  1. Sign in with an administrator account.
  2. Open Control Panel.
  3. Select Add or Remove Programs.
  4. Click Add/Remove Windows Components.
  5. Select Fax Services.
  6. Click Next.
  7. When Windows requests a file, insert the matching Windows XP installation CD or connect the correct OEM recovery media.
  8. Browse to the media’s i386 folder.
  9. Continue the wizard until the component installation finishes.
  10. Restart Windows if prompted.

The installation source should match the installed Windows XP edition, language, and service-pack level. A disc from a different release can contain an incompatible or differently updated file.

If the wizard displays:

Cannot copy file fxscfgwz.dll

or:

File fxscfgwz.dll is needed

it generally means Windows cannot find the correct source path. It does not automatically mean that the file should be downloaded separately.

If the source contains fxscfgwz.dl_

Windows XP installation media commonly stores system files in compressed form. The source may contain:

fxscfgwz.dl_

rather than:

fxscfgwz.dll

Prefer to let the Windows Components Wizard read the i386 directory directly. If the wizard cannot use the source automatically, you can extract the file to a temporary folder with the built-in expand command:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
expand X:i386fxscfgwz.dl_ C:Tempfxscfgwz.dll

Replace X: with the drive letter of your installation media. Create C:Temp first if it does not exist:

mkdir C:Temp

The extracted file is useful for troubleshooting, but manually copying it into a system directory is not the preferred repair. The Fax Services installer needs the complete matching source, including any related files and setup information.

What success looks like

The Windows Components Wizard completes without requesting fxscfgwz.dll again, and Fax Services appears installed. If the wizard asks for several additional files, your source problem is broader than one DLL. Use a complete matching installation image rather than extracting individual files one at a time.

Microsoft’s documentation describes the Fax Server role and fax configuration APIs in the Fax Server documentation and the Microsoft Fax protocol specification.

Fix 2: Reinstall Fax Server on Windows Server

On supported Windows Server installations, repair the role instead of copying fxscfgwz.dll manually.

  1. Open Server Manager.
  2. Select Manage.
  3. Click Add Roles and Features.
  4. Choose Role-based or feature-based installation.
  5. Select the target server.
  6. On the server roles page, select Fax Server.
  7. Click Add Features when prompted.
  8. Continue through the wizard.
  9. Click Install.
  10. Open Fax Service Manager after installation and verify that the service and configuration are available.

Microsoft’s Fax Server Step-by-Step Guide explains the role installation and configuration process.

If the role installation requests a source file, provide matching Windows Server installation media. Do not use a Windows XP copy of the DLL for a Windows Server installation.

Fix 3: Check Windows Features on Windows 10 and Windows 11

Windows 10 and Windows 11 are not the original home of the commonly indexed fxscfgwz.dll build. An error on a modern system often means an old fax application, legacy installer, or restored program is expecting an XP-era component.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Still, check whether an applicable Windows feature is available:

  1. Press Windows key + R.
  2. Type:

text
optionalfeatures

  1. Press Enter.
  2. Review the available Windows features.
  3. If a fax-related feature is listed and matches what you are trying to install, select it.
  4. Click OK.
  5. Restart Windows if requested.

Do not assume that Windows 10 or Windows 11 should contain this exact DLL. If the feature is not listed, Windows Features cannot restore it. The safer solution is usually to reinstall the legacy application from its original installer, use a supported replacement, or run the software in an environment compatible with its original Windows release.

Copying an XP DLL into System32 or SysWOW64 can leave the application with additional missing dependencies and can create version conflicts.

Fix 4: Repair current Windows system files with DISM and SFC

Use this step when the error began after a failed update, system recovery, cleanup operation, or other Windows corruption. It is more relevant to current Windows component damage than to obtaining a legacy XP fax file.

  • Tech Specs: Up to 56k data download, 48k data upload, and 14.4k fax communication. The 56k data/fax modem uses USB 2.0 Type A with a full speed of 56kb/s.
  • Compatibility: Standard and expanded AT command set compatibility. Provides fast connection and maintenance function on the modem.
  1. Right-click Start.
  2. Select Terminal (Admin) or Command Prompt (Admin).
  3. Approve the User Account Control prompt.
  4. Run:

cmd
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth

  1. Wait for DISM to finish.
  2. Then run:

cmd
sfc /scannow

  1. Wait until the verification reaches 100 percent.
  2. Restart the computer.
  3. Try the fax application or installer again.

Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC because DISM can repair the component store that SFC uses as a repair source. See Microsoft’s System File Checker guidance.

Interpreting the result

  • Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations: current protected files were not detected as damaged.
  • Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and repaired them: restart and test again.
  • Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but could not repair some: run DISM again, restart, and repeat SFC. If it still fails, investigate servicing errors and the component installation source.
  • The commands complete successfully but the same legacy DLL error remains: SFC and DISM did not provide the old Fax Services file your program needs.

Repeatedly running SFC without checking what changed will not normally solve a missing legacy installation source. Outbyte PC Repair can scan for system issues and show what needs attention, while the repair is completed by the full version; it is optional, and reinstalling the fax program remains the definitive fix when that program owns the dependency.

Fix 5: Reinstall the application that reports the error

If the message appears when launching a third-party fax program or old business application, the program may have copied an incomplete set of files or may expect Fax Services to be installed first.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open Settings.
  2. Select Apps.
  3. Open Installed apps.
  4. Find the fax application or program that displays the error.
  5. Select the three-dot menu beside it.
  6. Choose Uninstall.
  7. Restart Windows.
  8. Reinstall the program from its original, trusted installer.
  9. If the program has a Repair option in Installed apps, use that before uninstalling it.

Do not install a standalone DLL from a search result. The application’s installer may need multiple files, registry settings, services, or a particular Fax Services version that a loose DLL cannot provide.

If the software was designed for Windows XP, check whether its vendor provides a newer release. Compatibility settings may help some older applications, but they do not recreate an absent Fax Services component.

Fix 6: Check antivirus quarantine before restoring anything

Security software may have removed a file from an old installation, but a familiar filename is not proof that the file is safe.

In Microsoft Defender:

  1. Open Windows Security.
  2. Select Virus & threat protection.
  3. Click Protection history.
  4. Find the detection involving fxscfgwz.dll.
  5. Expand the entry.
  6. Review the original path, detection name, and action.
  7. Restore the file only if it came from trusted matching Windows media and its location and signature are credible.

Microsoft explains this process in its Protection History guidance.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not add a broad antivirus exclusion just to make the error disappear. If Defender detects the file again, leave it quarantined, run a full scan, and reinstall Fax Services from trusted media.

Fix 7: Update or reinstall fax hardware drivers

A fax modem or multifunction printer driver can fail separately from fxscfgwz.dll. Driver problems are more likely when fax hardware disappeared from Windows, the device shows a warning icon, or the error began after changing USB ports or restoring an image.

  4. Look for a warning icon or an unknown device.
  5. Right-click the affected device.
  6. Select Update driver.
  7. Choose Search automatically for drivers.
  8. If that does not help, right-click the device again and select Uninstall device.
  9. Restart Windows.
  10. Install the current driver supplied by the hardware manufacturer if Windows does not reinstall it automatically.

A driver update will not replace fxscfgwz.dll; it addresses the hardware layer after the Fax component itself is present. Outbyte Driver Updater can identify outdated drivers and show which versions need attention, while the driver installation is completed by the full version; it is optional, and the hardware manufacturer’s driver remains the preferred source.

Fix 8: Use System Restore after a failed recovery or update

System Restore can help if the problem began after a failed component installation, system cleanup, or image recovery and a suitable restore point exists.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Press Windows key + R.
  2. Type:

text
rstrui.exe

  1. Press Enter.
  2. Select Choose a different restore point if that option appears.
  3. Pick a restore point from before the error began.
  4. Click Scan for affected programs if available.
  5. Review the changes.
  6. Click Next, then Finish.
  7. Allow Windows to restart.

System Restore rolls back system files, settings, drivers, and installed programs, but it does not remove personal files. Microsoft’s System Restore documentation explains the process.

If no suitable restore point exists, continue with a feature reinstall or application reinstall rather than trying to restore an isolated DLL.

Do not run regsvr32 as a generic repair

regsvr32 is used for DLLs that provide a registration entry point such as DllRegisterServer. It is not a universal command for repairing missing or damaged DLLs.

There is no reliable Microsoft evidence that fxscfgwz.dll must be registered manually. Running commands such as these can produce an error without fixing the installation:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
regsvr32 fxscfgwz.dll

Do not run it unless documentation for the specific Fax component or application explicitly requires registration. Microsoft’s regsvr32 documentation describes its intended purpose.

Do not copy the file into System32 or SysWOW64

The commonly indexed build is 32-bit, but that does not mean it should be copied into both Windows system directories.

  • System32 is used by 64-bit Windows system components, despite its confusing name.
  • SysWOW64 stores many 32-bit system components on 64-bit Windows.
  • A 32-bit file is not interchangeable with a 64-bit component.
  • There is no confirmed evidence here of a separate 64-bit fxscfgwz.dll build.
  • Manual copying can bypass Windows servicing and leave dependent files, services, and registry configuration missing.

Use the Windows feature installer, Server Manager, or the original application’s setup program instead.

Is downloading fxscfgwz.dll safe

Random DLL download sites are risky because the file may contain malware, have the wrong architecture, come from the wrong Windows release, or fail to match the rest of the Fax installation. A correctly named DLL can still be modified or placed in a deceptive location.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use these sources instead:

  • Matching Windows XP installation media or an OEM recovery image for XP Fax Services
  • Matching Windows Server installation media for the Fax Server role
  • The original application’s trusted installer
  • Windows Features, Server Manager, DISM, and SFC for supported current Windows components
  • Microsoft Defender and Windows Security for verification

Check a suspicious file’s path, Microsoft digital signature, publisher information, and security scan results. Do not treat a filename alone as proof of authenticity.

Frequently asked questions

Is fxscfgwz.dll a Microsoft file

Yes. Its description is Microsoft Fax Configuration Wizard, and public metadata identifies Microsoft Corporation as the publisher. It is associated with Microsoft Fax Server and is strongly linked with Windows XP Fax Services.

Is there a 64-bit version

The commonly indexed build is 32-bit. There is no confirmed evidence here of a separate 64-bit build. Do not assume that a 32-bit XP file is suitable for a 64-bit Windows component.

Why does Windows ask for an XP CD

The Fax Services installer is looking for the original component source. Windows XP commonly stores that source in the i386 directory, sometimes as compressed files such as fxscfgwz.dl_.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What if the error appears on Windows 10 or Windows 11

Treat it as a legacy application or incomplete old component first. Check Windows Features, reinstall the program that reports the error, and use DISM and SFC only for current Windows corruption. Do not assume that modern Windows should contain this exact XP-era file.

What information should I provide when asking for help

Include the Windows version and architecture, the exact error text, the program or wizard showing it, the path requested by the installer, whether Fax Services is being installed or an existing fax application is launching, and whether antivirus recently quarantined the file.
